Sign of the times: Cable trade association NCTA, which until now stood for National Cable & Telecommunications Association, has rebranded to NCTA – The Internet & Television Association. “Modernizing our brand injects a new sense of excitement into our effort to represent an industry that is America’s largest and fastest home internet provider and the creator of the world’s best television content,” said the group’s CEO, Michael Powell.

The Tonight Show’s Jimmy Fallon, criticized for being easy on guest Donald Trump last Thursday (tweeted Jeopardy whiz Ken Jennings, “In his defense, Jimmy Fallon just pulled in a 35 share among white supremacists 18-49”), responded to post-Emmys prodding from TMZ. “Have you seen my show?” the NBC late night host asked. “I’m never too hard on anyone.” On Monday night, Fallon showed Trump rival Hillary Clinton a gift he said he’d given the GOP’s nominee – a bag a softballs. "I’ll give them to you later in the evening," Fallon promised.

Nielsen announced a schedule for the phase-in of its new Total Content Ratings, part of its Total Audience Measurement Market, aimed a measuring audiences wherever content is consumed. As of August 1, the Total Content Ratings toolset has been available to participating publishers, who can see data for other publishers. During 4Q16, Nielsen will make select data from participating publishers available to agencies and the press, and on January 1, 2017, the Total Content toolset will be available to agencies as well as publishers. On March 1, the toolset will be available to all Nielsen clients. How’s it going?“We have been working closely with Nielsen on Total Audience since last year and we are pleased with the results thus far," said CBS Corp. chief research officer David Poltrack, one of the execs quoted by Nielsen. "We are deep in the process of evaluating the data and considering its impact on the market, our programming and our advertising partners. We are in support of the syndication schedule for the data and we are looking forward to working with Nielsen to further expand measurement across even more platforms in the near future.”

A comedy starring comedians Felipe Esparza and Dustin Ybarra is in development at ABC. Project produced by 3 Arts and ABC Studios centers on three very different adult siblings living together.

NBC bought The Last Policeman, an adaptation of the mystery novel by Ben H. Winters, reports Deadline. Neal Moritz (Preacher) is producing; Sony Television is the studio.

CBS is developing a dysfunctional family comedy from Austin Winsberg (Jake in Progress), Eric and Kim Tannenbaum and CBS Television Studios. Story focuses on a family one year after its patriarch has passed away.

With three wins on Sunday (for a total of 12 for the year), HBO’s Game of Thrones broke the record for the most number of Emmy Awards by a scripted series, with 38. (Frasier had 37.) FX’s The People v. O.J. Simpson took home 5 major awards Sunday, for a second-best total of 9 for the year.

Only 4 awards went to Big Four nets on Sunday: Regina King, Best Supporting Actress in ABC’s American Crime; NBC’s The Voice for Reality Show Competition; Kate McKinnon for Supporting Actress in a Comedy for NBC’s Saturday Night Live, and Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special, to Fox’s Grease: Live.

Maggie Smith won her third Emmy for Downton Abbey, and for the third time was a no-show. “We’re not mailing this to her,” said host Jimmy Kimmel. “Maggie, if you want this, it will be in the lost and found.” 

Veep’s Julia Louis-Dreyfus did show up, to pick up her record fifth consecutive Emmy and dedicate it to her father, businessman/poet William Louis-Dreyfus, who passed away Friday. “I’m so glad he liked Veep, because his opinion was the one that really mattered,” said Louis-Dreyfus. Responding to confused fans, actor Richard Dreyfuss later tweeted, “I’m actually not Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ father. But I really appreciate all the concerned tweets.”
Apparently presidential nominee Donald Trump subscribes to the “no publicity is bad publicity” school of thought. Responding to the many negative mentions of him during Sunday’s Emmys telecast (
“Thanks to Mark, we don’t have to watch reality shows anymore, because we’re living in one,” said host Jimmy Kimmel of The Apprentice producer Mark Burnett. “I’m going on the record: he’s responsible if Donald Trump gets elected, and if he builds that wall, the first person we’re throwing over it is Mark Burnett.”), the candidate said on Monday’s Fox & Friends, “I watched the Emmys last night and there were so many skits about Trump! I think it’s great.”


CNBC’s Make Me a Millionaire Investor is back for season two on Thursday, October 6 at 10p. Premiere focuses on an emergency nurse who invented a CPR device, and a retired firefighter with a harness designed to make fighting fires safer.

The Riveras, starring the five children of late Mexican-American music star Jenni Rivera, launches Sunday, October 16 at 10p on NBC Universo. The 10-episode reality show comes four years after the death of Rivera in a plane crash.


For the eighth year, Ion will debut five original holiday movies, beginning Sunday, November 27. Titles include A Vermont Christmas Vacation, A Firehouse Christmas, A Cinderella Christmas, Christmas with the Andersons and A Husband for Christmas.

Today’s episode of syndicated talker Steve Harvey features the first joint interview with basketball legend Magic Johnson, his wife Cookie and two of their children, EJ and Elisa. Among the topics is how the family overcame the challenge of Magic Johnson’s HIV diagnosis 25 years ago.


Toyota has signed on as presenting sponsor for interactive sports talk show Nacion ESPN, debuting on ESPN2 Monday, September 26 at 5p. The weekly one-hour show, which will target young, bilingual U.S. Hispanic sports fans, “strengthens our commitment to better serve a diverse sports fan base while also generating opportunities for advertisers with a total market approach,” said Freddy Rolon, VP and GM of ESPN Deportes.


Scripps’ OTT video news network Newsy landed its first cable deal, with Cincinnati Bell. “Cable is still the most powerful television viewing platform in the world,” said Blake Sabatinelli, GM of Newsy, distributed on platforms including Watchable from Comcast, Roku, Sling TV and Apple TV.


Seeso, along with UK’s Channel 4, ordered a season two of Flowers. Dysfunctional family comedy stars Olivia Colman (Broadchurch) and Julian Barratt (The Mighty Boosh).


Emerging from FremantleMedia’s investment in Naked Entertainment: reality formats 100% Hotter, taming too-extreme styles, and dysfunctional family repair show Families Gone Wild. Titles are the first projects from the partnership.

9 Story Media Group inked deals in China for animated series Wild Kratts. Chinese national broadcaster China Central Television has acquired broadcast rights with the series airing on its CCTV-14 kids channel. And in partnership with Beijing-based Pacific Media Group, digital sales include an exclusive agreement with Youku and Alibaba for seasons 1 to 3. Content placement for season 4 has been secured with many of China’s leading digital platforms, including CNTV, iqiyi, LeTV, PPTV, and SMG.
Corus Entertainment ordered Good Stars and Fire & Dew, the second and third installments of L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables series of films produced by Breakthrough Entertainment. Ella Ballentine, Martin Sheen and Sara Botsford return for the sequels, slated to premiere on Corus Entertainment’s YTV channel in Canada in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

Production has begun on Bellevue, from Muse Entertainment and Back Alley Film Productions. Drama starring Anna Paquin (True Blood) will premiere in winter 2017 on Canada’s CBC.

Corus Entertainment announced the sale of Canadian lifestyle series Masters of Flip to Discovery Channel for TLC in Poland and DLife in MENA, and to A+E Networks UK for Lifetime in the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa and Scripps Networks in the U.S., among others. Buying the View also sold to Discovery Channel for TLC in Poland and DLife in MENA. Unscripted Cheer Squad landed at Australia’s LifeStyle You.

Opposite Sunday Night Football, Sunday’s well-reviewed Emmys on ABC drew an all-time low average audience of 11.3 million viewers, down 5 percent versus last year’s telecast on Fox, which followed a Sunday NFL game. The show did win ABC its largest non-sports audience in the 3-hour time period since the Academy Awards in February. And Facebook reports over 9 million people had 14 million interactions on the service, with the top 3 trending moments the wins for Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany, Game of Thrones and The People v. O.J. Simpson’s Sterling K. Brown.

Orphan Black was the top most engaged-with nominated show in social across the major platforms, with 650,000 engagements across Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram. OB was also the number 1 most shared program on Facebook and Twitter of all Emmy nominees; the night of the Emmys marked Orphan Black’s highest levels of engagement, conversation and sharing of the year to date.

ID’s three-part JonBenet: An American Murder Mystery was the net’s most-watched series ever, averaging 2.6 million P2+ and 1.1 million P25-54. The series-high episode two, on Tuesday, September 13 was the number one ad-supported program for P2+ HH, P25-54 and W25-54, averaging more than 2.8 million P2+ and nearly 1.3 million P25-54.In total, the series reached more than 11 million unique P2+ across the three nights.

The season 20 premiere of Comedy Central’s South Park premiered to a 2.2/8 Live+3 rating, up 22 percent from last year’s launch and 29 percent from its finale, for its highest rated episode since December 2013.
