Good morning. It’s Friday September 15, 2017 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Nielsen ratings for week one of the NFL came in and saw Hurricane Irma take a toll on ratings for the new season. While SNF saw year-to-year gains for NBC, as reported yesterday, other league offerings had a tougher outing, with overall ratings (not counting MNF) off 13% from year ago numbers. Sunday afternoon matchups took the hardest hit, with regional game viewership on CBS dipping 17% with 13.4 million viewers, regional games on Fox down 28% with 11.3 million viewers, and the Sunday afternoon national game on Fox off-pace by 17% with 22.8 million. Meanwhile, both games of the Monday Night Football Week 1 doubleheader were also down with the first game dropping 12.5% to hit 11.5 million viewers from the first Monday Night game last year; while the second game, between the Chargers and Broncos fell 7% with 9.9 million viewers.

ON THE AIR

NBCSN lined up more than 30 Atlantic 10 basketball games for the 2017-18 season, including 21 regular-season Atlantic 10 men’s basketball matchups, three regular-season Atlantic 10 women’s basketball games, and exclusive coverage of the second round and quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Championship. The schedule boasts eight games featuring teams from last season’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament with coverage starting Nov. 26, at 5p with Temple/La Salle.

ESPN’s College GameDay is booking a stop in NYC for the first time, originating from Times Square on Sept. 23. While previewing college football week 4’s biggest games around the country, College GameDay will also highlight college football’s New York history and modern day culture.

Elsewhere in college football, CBS Sports Network has a quartet of games in the cards for Saturday that includes a Mountain West vs. Pac-12 evening double-header that begins with Oregon/Wyoming at 7p (Carter Blackburn, analyst Aaron Taylor and reporter Jenny Dell call the action), followed by San Diego State/Stanford at 10:30p with Ben Holden, analyst Jay Feely and sideline reporter John Schriffen on microphone duties. That afternoon will also see Virginia Tech/ECU at 3:30p and Iowa State/Akron at noon.

Meanwhile, CBS Sports Network will once again serve as the national television partner of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference with the network set to televise 14 NCHC games throughout the 2017-18 campaign in addition to both semifinals and the championship game of the 2018 NCHC Frozen Faceoff. Defending NCAA national champion and NCHC regular-season champion Denver will be featured five times on the channel throughout the regular season.

NBCSN is revving up for The 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series championship to be decided this weekend at the IndyCar GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma on Sunday at 6:30p. Leigh Diffey will call the action alongside analysts and drivers Paul Tracy and Townsend Bell.

Tennis Channel and Tennis Channel Plus serve up coverage of both Davis Cup semifinals this weekend with Belgium/Australia in Brussels and France/Serbia in Lille, France. The matches will be live on Tennis Channel Plus before running on Tennis Channel beginning at 3p each day. Both Davis Cup semifinals will consist of two singles matches on Friday, followed by the doubles match Saturday, Sept. 16. Tennis Channel’s coverage concludes with the remaining singles play Sunday, Sept. 17.

MSG Networks announced that New Jersey Devils former captain and defenseman Bryce Salvador will join the MSG Networks broadcasting team this season as studio analyst for home games. He will join Ken Daneyko who returns for his fourth season as in-game analyst, and play-by-play announcer Steve Cangialosi. Cangialosi and Deb Placey both return to the Devils broadcast team for their seventh seasons as play-by-play announcer and host/reporter respectively.

Meanwhile, with the arrest of Craig Carton last week, CBS Sports Radio saw The Morning Show with Boomer make its debut, as Carton has opted to bow out of the show due to his legal matters. “I think it’s a good move for Craig,” Esiason said of the announcement that came Wednesday night, according to reports, “and I think for he and his family he has to focus supremely on that. That’s the one thing he has to take care of and that’s the one thing we want him to do, we want him and his family to get through this. He’s going to have to put all his energy in that.”
