Good morning. It’s Thursday September 15, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
MLB laid out its 2017 slate of dates, with the regular season opening up with a trio of games on April 2, with 13 more the next day. Highlights include Jackie Robinson Day on April 15, the 2017 MLB Draft on June 12, and the 88th All-Star Game on July 11 at Marlins Park in Miami. ESPN opens the books with Yankees/Rays and Giants/Diamondbacks in a pair of divisional matchups on April 2.
After the NBA and NCAA pulled events out of North Carolina as a result of HB2, the ACC became the latest organization to remove all its athletic championships from the state. The ACC Council of Presidents voted Wednesday to relocate the league’s championships until North Carolina repeals the controversial law beginning this school year and including the ACC football championship game that was set to be played in Charlotte in December.
NBCSN’s coverage of the Sprint Cup race from Richmond International Raceway on Saturday ranked as the most watched cable sports telecast of the weekend generating 2.7 million viewers. Live streaming of the race via NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app generated 3.3 million live minutes, an uptick of 56% versus to the same event last year.
NBCU CEO Steve Burke told attendees of the Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2016 Media, Communications and Entertainment Conference that the company banked over $250 million from the Rio Games, anchored by the company scoring a 20% gain in ad sales. “Rio Olympics by any measure was a tremendous success,” says Steve Burke, CEO of NBCUniversal, speaking at an Bank of America/Merrill Lynch media conference on Wednesdays. “NBC lost as much as $200 million in some of the Olympics in the not-too-distant past. We made over $250 million in Rio.”
Thursday Night Football kicks off tonight with a Jets/Bills matchup at 8:25p on CBS, NFL Network, Twitter and NFL Mobile from Verizon. Jim Nantz and Phil Simms call the action along with reporter Tracy Wolfson while Jay Feely joins as kicking analyst. 6p sees TNF GameDay on NFl Network, with NFL Thursday Night Kickoff at 7:30p on CBS, NFL Network and Twitter. Immediately following the game, the Mazda Postgame show airs live on NFL Network, CBS and Twitter from both Los Angeles and New Era Field providing highlights, analysis and live interviews.
Big Ten Network locked in sites for the first six weeks of its pregame show BTN Tailgate, which will hit a different Big Ten campus each week during conference play. The debut episode will be live from East Lansing ahead of the Badgers/Spartans on Sept. 24. Oct. 1 will see the show hit Lincoln, followed by Columbus on Oct. 8.
ESPN and DRL locked in a multi-year agreement to for drone racing, with FPV racing set to hit North, South and Central America and the Caribbean. In the U.S., the 2016 season will air as ten, one-hour episodes covering five races on ESPN/ESPN2 beginning with today’s “Intro to DRL” episode at 11p on ESPN2. “Coverage of DRL lets us merge storytelling, technology and competition into compelling weekly content that we believe will appeal to a growing audience,” said Matthew Volk, ESPN Director, Programming & Acquisitions. “We look forward to delivering events and programming to passionate fans of this emerging sport.”
Oct. 2 will officially mark the end of Vin Scully’s legendary run calling Dodgers games. He told the LA Times that he would now call any postseason games for the team.

The University of California Athletic Department is teaming with Marshawn Lynch’s BeastMode Apparel to launch of a new co-branded merchandise collection. Back to NASCAR, NBC Sports reports that consumption of NASCAR content this season on NBCSports.com, the NBC Sports app, and connected devices have generated nearly 59 million minutes and over 450,000 unique users, for boosts of 77% and 45%, respectively over the same period a year ago. Connected device usage is seeing 103,000 unique users, more than double the number of connected TV users at the same point in the 2015 season on NBC. Through 10 races of NBC Sports’ Sprint Cup season, NBC Sports Digital has seen year-over-year growth in live minutes streamed for every race, and growth in unique users in eight races.
Ahead of its TNF debut, Twitter opened the doors to a new app for Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Microsoft’s Xbox One, allowing audiences to consume content that includes live streams of its 10 NFL Thursday Night Football games.
