Long-form Video. The IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau) defines long-form video as video content that always has a content arc with a beginning, middle, and end, and that typically lasts longer than 10 minutes. (Most frequently, that means movies or series.) If long-form video content is ad supported, it typically contains mid-roll ad breaks.

Novak Djokovic has been the best male tennis player in the world for years, but now he’s adding a new entry to his resume: documentary star. Djokovic has sold the rights to a new doc series – focusing on his life both on and off the court – to Amazon. It’s slated to shoot over the 2017 tennis season. No premiere date has been set as of yet; the working title is simply Novak.
Amazon seems to be on a real tennis kick. In a report from Bloomberg, Tennis Channel CEO Ken Solomon confirmed that Amazon has been in talks to potentially bring the cable net’s live content to the Prime Video service. And according to Bloomberg, that’s just the tip of the iceberg: Amazon has had similar discussions with a variety of potential sports partners. Amazon declined to comment to Bloomberg. AD TECH
Adstream, a provider of creative asset management, delivery and analytics technology, announced the launch of Connect, a new service. Adstream Connect is billed as an end-to-end solution designed to help broadcasters aggregate incoming commercial content, and then re-distribute broadcast-ready video spots to VOD and digital channels. “In the same way technology has made it possible to automate buying and selling ads through programmatic platforms, we are automating video ad management across channels,” said Ian Wheal, Adstream’s Global Strategy Director, in a statement.

At the IBC conference in Amsterdam, the media services company MX1 announced MX1 360, a hybrid, cloud-based, on-premises end-to-end media platform. The platform merges several of the company’s preciously-existing offerings. Specifically, the new platform consolidates content organization, monetization, and global distribution services. MX1 currently distributes content to over 120 SVOD platforms. MX1 was formed earlier this year when RR Media merged with SES Platform Services (SPS). At IBC, the company also announced a new detail about its new senior management team: It will include members of both SPS and RR Media.
PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS
Hulu has greenlit Future Man, a new comedy series starring and produced by Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games). The series hails from Sony Pictures Television; Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, and Matt Tolmach will Executive Produce. The show centers on a janitor/gamer who is recruited to travel through time and prevent humanity’s extinction. It’s slated to bow next year.
It’s pretty well established that the “second screen” experience impacts the way that viewers watch TV. But for the first time, a scientific study suggests that it might also impact the way that TV viewership is measured. In a new study conducted by Nielsen Consumer Neuroscience, 25% of Nielsen panelists failed to respond to their “people-meter” prompts because they were distracted by a second screen. Nielsen is quick to point out that the findings are not conclusive, and that the sample size was very small. Nonetheless, it’s the first true scientific study indicating that digital distractions may skew TV viewership metrics.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Netflix has brought on a major new content exec. Tara Flynn, formerly the VP of Creative Affairs for Fox 21 Television Studios, will now serve as a development executive on the Netflix Original Series team. She’ll work primarily on drama series. Flynn is only the latest former linear TV figure to join the streaming giant; former NBC exec Jane Wiseman and former Universal TV exec Andrew Weil, for instance, work on the comedy side.
