Barbra Streisand will make her first late night TV guest appearance since 1963, as Jimmy Fallon’s sole guest “for a night of talk, comedy and performances” on NBC’s Tonight Show on Monday, September 15. Streisand’s new album, Partners, gets released the next day.

IN THE NEWS

The former Late Show intern who filed a class action suit against CBS and David Letterman’s Worldwide Pants production company for unpaid wages withdrew the lawsuit and issued an apology, saying in a letter that she was “caught in a weak, vulnerable time, facing student debt.” In fact, Mallory Musallam told the New York Post, “I have nothing but respect for David Letterman and the whole organization.”

The day after Sony announced a deal to offer Viacom’s 22 networks on its upcoming cloud-based TV service, 21st Century Fox COO Chase Carey said Fox has its eye on Internet pay TV services, too. “We’re engaged with a lot of players and excited about the opportunities,” said Carey at a Goldman Sachs conference.

Also at the Goldman gathering, Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam said the company expects to offer “a bundle with major broadcast providers” for its own Internet TV service by mid-2015. Included will be “the Big Four for sure,” as well as digital media “that really goes after Millennials.”

Former NFL-er Tim Tebow joins ABC’s Good Morning America as a contributor starting Monday, September 15. Tebow, already an analyst for Disney-owned ESPN and known for his religious faith, will follow inspiring stories of triumph across the country for the morning show.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Fox landed an untitled ghost hunting drama from Evan Katz and Manny Coto, exec producers of 24, who wrote the 20th Century Fox project. Michael Cuesta (Homeland) will direct.

Fox is also on the hunt for comedies, giving a put pilot order to a project starring John Stamos (Full House) as a bachelor who learns he’s a father and grandfather. Danny Chun (The Office) is writing and exec producing with Dan Fogelman (The Neighbors) and Stamos for ABC Studios.

COMING UP

 
What happens when you plop a staunch Republican senator on a deserted island with a progressive Democrat? That’s the scenario in Discovery’s Rival Survival, and it’s challenge Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-NM) were eager to take on. “Both of us know just how frustrated people are with Washington right now,” said the politicians, who pitched the idea to the net. “We recognize how difficult it can be to cut through the partisanship.So we decided to do something completely out of the ordinary and frankly a little extreme to show the world and our colleagues that even if you have serious differences, if you want to survive you have to work together.” Series premieres Wednesday, October 29 at 10p.

CBS can’t get enough football this fall. Four gridiron greats will guest on CBS dramas: Tony Gonzalez plays a special agent on NCIS, airing Tuesday, September 30 at 8p, while Boomer Esiason, Eric Dickerson and Phil Simms play themselves on, respectively, Blue Bloods Friday, October 3 at 10p; Hawaii Five-0 Friday, October 31 at 9p and Elementary Thursday, November 13 at 10p.

Discovery Fit & Health and ABC News are partnering for a quick-turn documentary, Ebola: Inside the Deadly Outbreak, about the highly infectious disease. The one-hour special, featuring ABC News chief medical editor Dr. Richard Besser and produced by ABC News’ Lincoln Square Productions, airs Thursday, September 18 at 10p, part of a special night of programming titled “Ebola: Are We Next?”.

VH1 movie Drumline: A New Beat premieres Monday, October 27 at 9p. The film, inspired by the 2002 movie about a marching band, starring Nick Cannon, was produced in partnership with Fox Television Studios and exec produced by original film producers Wendy Finerman, Dallas Austin and Jody Gerson, along with Cannon.

NOVA dives into the world of computer security and “global geek squads” in Rise of the Hackers, premiering on PBS Wednesday, September 24 at 9p. Warns one expert in the film, “The greatest threat to the world today is the keyboard.”

Chef competition series Midnight Feast, with professional cooks either winning ten times the cost of the ingredients they use, or paying the tab, debuts on fyi Thursday, October 16 at 10p. Restaurateur Spike Mendelsohn hosts the series, from Nerd TV.

Lifetime two-parter The Red Tent premieres Sunday, December 7 and Monday, December 8 at 9p. Based on the bestseller by Anita Diamant, the Sony Pictures Television production is set during Old Testament times.

 

RETURNING SERIES

AMC ordered a 10-ep second season of Game of Arms. The unscripted series focused on the subculture of arm-wrestling averaged 747,000 total viewers and 450,000 among A18-49 its first go-round.

Lifetime is back documenting Tori Spelling’s drama-filled life for Tru Tori. Season one of the reality show over-delivered the net’s 2014 primetime average by 74 percent among W25-54, 47 percent among A18-49 and 15 percent with total viewers. Filming has started for the first of eight new eps from Studio Lambert and All3Media premiering Tuesday, October 21 at 9p.

Two series return to Spike TV on Sunday, October 5 at 9p. Bar Rescue takes the 9p slot, with nightlife expert Jon Taffer helping turn around struggling establishments, followed at 10p by “gotcha!” renovation show Catch a Contractor.

Science Channel’s The Unexplained Files, the net’s most-watches series of 2013, returns for season two Tuesday, September 16 at 10p, with an analysis of bones that appear to belong to a human over nine feet tall.

BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

Toyota, Revlon and T-Mobile are onboard upcoming Telemundo reality competition Yo Soy El Artista, launching Sunday, September 14 at 8p. Multiplatform sponsorship initiatives offer “unique and unprecedented opportunities to connect with consumers,” said Mike Rosen, EVP of ad sales, NBCUniversal Hispanic Group. Included: cross-promotion on other Telemundo shows, Twitter Amplify, music videos, fan makeovers and digital integrations.

Volkswagen is teaming with Funny or Die and Target to promote its new Golf. A three-minute video showing a bachelor on a shopping spree in the aisles of the retailer, starring Funny or Die regular Rob Huebel, is airing online, with sneak peeks appearing during TBS’s Conan. “Funny or Die is one of the most recognized and sought-after brands in comedy today,” said Vinay Shahani, VP marketing, Volkswagen of America, “so we knew they would be the perfect partner to amplify Volkswagen’s unique sense of humor.”

(CSI: Miami) landed a series regular role on season two of Starz’s Power, as a SoCal transplant in the NYC-set drama.

Arjay Smith (Perception) will play a street-smart kid on the seventh and final season of FX’s Sons of Anarchy, airing Tuesdays at 10p.

Portia Doubleday (Carrie) and Carly Chaikin (Suburgatory) join USA pilot Mr. Robot, about computer programmer with a social disorder.

ABC’s Good Morning America led NBC’s Today by 738,000 total viewers and by 135,000 among A25-54 the week of September 1, according to Nielsen, the fourth straight week GMA increased its news demo lead compared to its year-ago week lead.

Chuck Todd’s first outing as moderator of Meet the Press – featuring an exclusive interview with President Obama – earned the Sunday morning news show its most-watched week in six months, up 19 percent year-over-year among A25-54, and 11 percent in total viewers.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Michael Ouweleen has been named Chief Marketing Officer for Turner Broadcasting System’s Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and Boomerang. Most recently, Ouweleen was Senior Vice President and Executive Director for Cartoon Network’s Creative Group.

Momita SenGupta has been promoted to Executive Vice President, Production for the Viacom Entertainment Group. Previously, SenGupta had been Senior Vice President, Production for the group.

CBS Television Distribution upped Joe Ferullo to Executive Vice President of Current Programming. Ferullo joined CTD in 2006, earning a promotion to Senior Vice President in 2012. Veteran producer Becky Brooks joins CTD as Vice President of Current Programming, reporting to Ferullo.

Wade Beckett is joining Fusion as Chief Programming Officer. Most recently, Becket served as showrunner for ESPN’s SportsNation.

Jason Jordan has been tapped to serve as Chief Operating Officer for Bellator MMA, expanding from his role as Senior Vice President, Digital Operations, Strategy & Finance, Viacom Entertainment Group.

Entertainment Studios appointed JD Black as Senior Vice President, Global Digital Marketing. Black had been Senior Vice President, Marketing at Sony Pictures Interactive.

Agency 360i announced three promotions: Senior Vice President of Strategy Lee Maicon to Chief Strategy Officer; Vice President of Marketing and Operations Amanda Malko to Chief Marketing Officer and Senior Vice President of Finance David Perkins to Chief Financial Officer.

Production company King and Country hired Lisa Miller for the newly-created position of Managing Director of Networks & Brands. Previously, Miller was Vice President of Marketing at mOcean.

IN MEMORIAM

Actor Richard Kiel died September 10. He was 74. The 7-foot-2 performer, who played assassin Jaws in two James Bond movies, appeared in TV series including The Twilight Zone, The Rifleman and Laramie.
