PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Comedy Central UK commissioned a UK version of Roast Battle, to be hosted by Jimmy Carr. Russell Brand and Katherine Ryan are onboard as judges.
ABC is high on a reboot of The Greatest American Hero, from Fresh off the Boat writer Rachna Fruchbom. The net put the show into development with a put pilot commitment. This time around, the hero, played by William Katt in the original, is an Indian-American woman. 20th Century Fox Television will co-produce with ABC Studios.
Paramount Television and Anonymous Content entered into a first look deal with Angus Wall and Linda Carlson‘s Rock Paper Scissors Entertainment. The two-year deal includes a first-look for scripted and unscripted content.
Irish public broadcaster RTE is joining Don Carmody Television as co-producer of Rare Earth, a 4-part post-Brexit environmental and political drama from DCTV and Bandit Films. Production begins in early 2018.
Crime drama Deadline, from Josh Berman (CSI), Matt Whitney (Timeless) and Sony Pictures Television Studios, has been put in development at NBC. Project focuses on an FBI agent-turned-investigative reporter. NBC also gave a script commitment plus penalty to legal drama The Outsider, from Chuck Rose (The Art of More), Walter Parks and Laurie MacDonald, and Universal Television.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES
Count on Food Network to deliver the goodies for Halloween. Halloween Wars returns Sunday, October 1 at 9p, following special Road to Halloween Wars at 8p. The next night brings Halloween Wars: Hayride of Horror at 10p. And that’s in addition to creepy culinary themed episodes slated for Chopped (Tuesday, October 3 at 10p), Beat Bobby Flay (Thursday, October 5 at 10p), Guy’s Grocery Games (Sunday, October 8 at 8p) and Ginormous Food (Friday, October 20 at 8p).
Season 6 of Fuse’s Big Freedia Bounces Back premieres Tuesday, September 12 at 10p.
Due to the uncertain path of Hurricane Irma, the launch date for Atlanta-produced Sister Circle on TV One has been moved to Monday, September 18. The daily talk show will air live weekdays from 9a-10a as part of the morning news and lifestyle programing block, as well as in 12 TEGNA markets. It’s the first time TV One will carry original programming from a local station group.
COMING UP
Feature-length documentary Tough Guys premieres on Showtime Friday, September 15 at 9p. Exec produced by Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) and Ross Kauffman (Born Into Brothels), the film explores the origin of martial arts competitions.
Hillary Clinton, making the talk show rounds to discuss her memoir, What Happened, sits down with The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah on Wednesday, November 1 at 11p. It’s Clinton’s first appearance on the Comedy Central late nighter since Noah took over as host.
KCRA 3 and its parent, Hearst Television, will televise a live one-hour special across the station group on Wednesday, September 13 at 10p, addressing America’s opioid epidemic. Soledad O’Brien hosts Matter of Fact: State of Addiction, part of a year-long multi-platform news and investigative series launched in January.
USS Indianapolis Live – From the Deep offers an undersea live tour of a World War II vessel that had been lost at the bottom of the North Pacific for over 72 years. Miles O’Brien hosts the show, airing on PBS Wednesday, September 13 at 10p (check local listings).
CASTING
KJ Smith (Queen Sugar) landed a recurring role on CW’s upcoming Dynasty, launching Wednesday, October 11 at 9p….Bonne Bedelia (Parenthood) will recur on season 2 of ABC’s Designated Survivor, returning Wednesday, September 27 at 10p….CBS’s Scorpion cast Tina Majorino in a recurring role for season 4, launching Monday, September 25 at 10p.
GOING GLOBAL
Singapore-based Bomanbridge Media announced sales of kids’ titles to ANTV Indonesia, Global TV Indonesia, EBS South Korea, Jei TV South Korea, Sun TV India and Bangladesh Renaissance. Among the shows were Matt Hatter Chronicles, Splatalot, Eve and Gumboot Kids.

Frozen out: Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that the company’s Star Wars and Marvel films will be part of its streaming service, slated to launch in 2019, and yanked from Netflix. Disney had already announced its service would include Disney and Pixar films and series.
Futurama fans can get their fix of the series, which ended in 2013, with an audio-only episode of the show. Series creator Matt Groening and the original cast are onboard for the episode, created as part of the Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow mobile game, available on nerdist.com, soundcloud.com and Spotify.
Amazon’s been busy, giving straight-to-series orders for a comedy starring ex-SNLers Fred Armisen and Maya Rudolph, and drama Tong Wars, set in 19th century San Francisco, as well as pilots for Upload from Greg Daniels (The Office) and Making Friends, from Carter Bays and Craig Thomas (How I Met Your Mother).
Hybrid comedy The Green Beret’s Guide to Surviving the Apocalypse speared a straight-to-series order from Netflix. Part scripted, part unscripted, the series comes from 2 military veterans; Matt Damon is among the exec producers.
Viewers prefer an ad-free experience, found a not surprising study from Hub Entertainment Research. In its TV Redefined report, Hub said 86% of DVR users fast-forward through ads, 27% expect shows on a network’s TVE app to be ad-free, and 34% described not being able to skip ads in a TVE service as a “major frustration.”

As Hurricane Irma raged on September 6, The Weather Channel was the # cable network among A25-54, with an average viewership of 470,000.
The focus on Irma might have hit football, too. The NFL’s kickoff game on NBC drew 21.8 million viewers, down 13% from last year’s opening game.
The season 4 finale of Starz’ Power set a season high record of 2.8 million viewers in Live+3 Nielsens, with viewership up 10% from season 3, and 8.8 million multiplatform viewers per episode.
TLC spin-off 90 Day Fiancee: Happily Ever After Tell All hit a series high for the franchise with a 2.0 rating among W25-54 and 2.4 million P2+ viewers. The tell-all and Before the 90 Days helped TLC to #1 for the night in cable among women (W25-54/18-49/18-34).
