James Corden got the Late Late Show gig. The British actor (Begin Again)/writer/host/producer’s name had been bandied about for months as a possible replacement for Craig Ferguson, who’s signing off in December, and CBS made it official on Monday. “James Corden is a rare entertainment force who combines irresistible charm, warmth and originality with a diverse range of creative instincts and performance talent,” said Nina Tassler, chairman, CBS Entertainment. “We’re very excited to introduce his considerable and very unique talents to our network television audience on a daily basis.”
How do you say “eat my shorts” in Mandarin? For the first time in its 25-year history, viewers across China will be able to watch The Simpsons (with subtitles). Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution struck a multi-year streaming deal with Sohu Video for the Fox comedy animated comedy, including season 26, premiering in the U.S. Sunday, September 28 at 8p. Said Simpsons exec producer Al Jean, “Woo hoo! Now we can reveal Springfield is actually in Guangdong province.”
A former intern at The Late Show with David Letterman filed a class action complaint, on behalf of herself and everyone else who has been an intern on the show, against CBS Broadcasting, CBS Corp. and Worldwide Pants. The complaint seeks “all compensation, including minimum wages and overtime compensation, which they were deprived of, plus interest, and attorney’s fees and costs.” An intern in 2008, Mallory Musallam’s contention that the show was in violation of New York State Labor Law mirrors similar recent claims in the media business.
VH1 is partnering with BuzzFeed to leverage the social news company’s original video and other digital content to create full-circle TV, social and digital campaigns. Their first collaborative video debuted Monday, promoting the upcoming season of Couples Therapy with Dr. Jenn. “BuzzFeed is the perfect partner to expand our reach to a wider audience and to engage even deeper with the VH1 brand across the social web,” said Caralene Robinson, SVP, creative group + consumer marketing, VH1. UP is sponsoring the sixth annual “Evolution of Gospel” celebration in Washington, D.C. September 15 at 7p at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. Net CEO Charles Humbard, instrumental in creating the Gospel Music Heritage Month Foundation, said, “No other music uplifts like gospel music. It is a part of the fabric of America and our heritage at UP.”
NBC placed a 10-ep, cast and script-contingent order for Manhunt, reports The Wrap. Whit Brayton and Zack Rice will write and exec produce the anthology drama about the hunt for a fugitive at large.
Dick Clark Productions and the Miss America Organization are teaming on marketing, licensing, sponsorship and distribution of the pageant, starting with the ABC telecast September 14, 2015. “We look forward to growing the show’s legacy and elevating the Miss America Competition for current and new generations of television viewers,” said chairman and CEO Sam Haskell.
Fox gave put pilot commitments to Minority Report, from Amblin Entertainment, based on the 2002 Steven Spielberg movie, and a family comedy written and exec produced by Scott Silveri (Friends) and directed by Jake Kasdan (New Girl).
The 69th Annual Tony Awards will be broadcast live from NYC’s Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, June 7 on CBS. Expect the nominations announcement Tuesday, April 28.
Outdoor Channel promises viewers “an offer they can’t refuse” with Gunfather, premiering Wednesday, October 1 at 7:30p. Reality show focuses on a New Yorker who sold everything he had to buy a firearms sales and restoration business in Montana.
The knives are out when sixteen elite chefs compete in five-ep Cutthroat Kitchen: Superstar Sabotage, launching Wednesday, October 8 at 9p. Grand prize awarded November 5.
Sportsman Channel’ annual “Bownanza” Presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods stunt offers 50 eps of bowhunting programming September 16-19, smack in the middle of archery season. First-of-its-kind talker The Round Table premieres Friday, September 19 at p, with expert archers discussing their skills.
Fyi’s new Best in Bridal follows two wedding shops with very different approaches (one’s all-male, the other team’s all female) competing for customer dollars. Docu-series launches fourteen half-hour eps Tuesday, October 7 at 9p.
Three Velocity series wrap up their seasons this week. Wheeler Dealers: Trading Up finale is Wednesday, September 10 at 9p, and All Girls Garage and Car Fix conclude Friday, September 12 at 8p and 8:30p.
Post-show Anarchy Afterward will air tonight at 11:50p, following the season seven premiere of FX’s Sons of Anarchy. Comedian Chris Franjola (Chelsea Lately) hosts.
Reelz celebrates the life of a comedy legend in Joan Rivers Remembered Thursday, September 11 at 10p. Special includes stories from family and friends. Rivers died September 4 at age 81.
GSN packs a one-two punch with a Skin Wars event: the season one finale, followed by an hour-long reunion show Wednesday, September 24, beginning at 9p. Reunion will be hosted by series judge RuPaul Charles.
PBS shares the stories of influential Baby Boomers – one for every 1946-1964 boomer year – in documentary American Masters: The Boomer List, premiering Tuesday, September 23 at 9p (check local listings). Among those who made the cut: Maria Shriver, Billy Joel, Rosie O’Donnell and Samuel L. Jackson.

VH1 is bringing back Candidly Nicole for a second season in 2015. Reality show based on Nicole Richie’s web series, from Telepictures and World of Wonder, increased Live+3 A18-49 ratings in its time period by 50 percent compared to the same time last year. In fact, said Susan Levinson, EVP of original programming and production, “Candidly Nicole has surpassed every goal that we set at launch.”
Rachel Boston (Witches of East End) plays the lead in Hallmark movie Small Miracles, from Johnson Production Group Inc. Boston will also serve as associate producer.
Maggie Lawson (Psych) will recur on the twelfth and final season of Two and a Half Men. CBS comedy returns Thursday, October 30 at 9p.
Broadway legend Patti Lupone (Evita) guests on season two of Showtime psychological thriller Penny Dreadful, while Helen McCrory (Medea) and Simon Russell Beale (King Lear) have been upped to series regulars. Production begins this month for a 2015 debut.
That voice you hear touting the Hyundai Sonata in TV spots won’t be Jeff Bridges’ in the campaign for the company’s 2015 model. After seven years at Hyundai, Bridges has been replace by Paul Rudd (Knocked Up). “We were looking for a voice that could be recognizable and relatable to a new generation of car buyers,” said Steve Shannon, VP of marketing for Hyundai Motor Company. “Rudd can be serious, humorous, informative and entertaining all at the same time. It’s his modern sensibility that we knew would be a perfect match for today’s customers.”
Moving into production for season three, 9 Story Entertainment struck deals for animated primetime comedy Fugget About It with Entertainment One, releasing season one of the series in Canada on DVD September 30, as well as an e-commerce site with Monetyze.
Legendary Global Television Distribution and the Alcon Television Group announced that Legendary will represent television and digital rights outside of the U.S. to Alcon’s space odyssey series The Expanse, slated to go into production this Fall.

Sunday Night Football’s Broncos/Colts game on NBC delivered a 15.1/25 in metered market ratings, down from Sunday Night Football’s 2013 premiere rating of 16.6/27.
Football didn’t hurt the season finale of ABC’s Wipeout, up 33 percent week to week to hit a .8 rating/2 share among A18-49. CBS’s Big Brother was also up, getting a 15 percent lift week-to-week in the demo, to 2.3. The premiere of Fox’s Utopia averaged a 1.9/6 in A18-49, with 4.6 million viewers, falling from 6.2 million total viewers to 3.8 million at 9:30, but beating Brother among A18-34, 2.0 versus 1.5.
TV One boasted its highest monthly performance of the year among A25-54 in August. The August 30 debut of original film Girlfriends’ Getaway premiered as the number one TV One original movie debut telecast ever among W25-54.
Friday A18-49 Analysis: Univision had the most A18-49 viewers Friday with 1.1/4, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. With the Big Four all airing the Stand Up for Cancer telethon from 8-9p, Univision took 8p with 1.3/5 for Mi Corazon Es Tuyo, followed by .4/2 for CW’s Masters of Illusion and Whose Line Is it Anyway. Uni topped 9p with 1.2/4 for Hasta Fin del Mundo, versus .9/3 for ABC’s Shark Tank and NBC’s Dateline. ABC and Telemundo tied at the top at 10p, with 1.1/4 for 20/20 and Senor de los Cielos.

Bravo Media promoted Shari Levine to the position of Executive Vice President of Current Production, Bravo. Previously, Levine was Senior Vice President of Current Production. “Shari is one of the creative visionaries behind many of Bravo’s hit series,” said Jerry Leo, Executive Vice President, Program Strategy, Bravo and Oxygen Media, and Production Bravo Media.
Chris Alexander was upped to Executive Vice President of Corporate Communications and Publicity for 20th Century Fox Television. Most recently, Alexander was Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications and Publicity.
Tim Poole, award-winning journalist from Vice, is joining Fusion as a Senior Correspondent and Director of Media Innovation. “Tim has offered audiences a perspective on news events that mainstream outlets have not been able to match using little more than his smartphone and a battery pack,” Fusion CEO Isaac Lee said in an email to staff. “As we continue to find new ways to engage with our audience, Tim will play a crucial role in helping Fusion break new boundaries.”
Actress Molly Glynn died September 6, after a tree struck her during a thunderstorm in Chicago. She was 46. Glynn, a Chicago theater actress, recurred on NBC’s Chicago Fire as an ER doctor.
