NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
Conde Nast Entertainment unveiled its new documentary-heavy fall slate called The Scene Inside. Based on the success of the docs Casualties of the Gridiron and Screw You Cancer, CNE will premiere five new shows: another health football series called The Grind (available now), a series based on Duke undergrad and porn star called Belle Knox (Sept. 16), a show highlighting those living in China’s luxury called China Wealth (October). Additionally, CNE will debut FPS Russia in November starring YouTuber gun expert Dmitri Potapoff and the documentary The Last Mile, set to debut in October.
 
Lin Media
’s Federated Media and Whalerock Industries announced a partnership to produce, distribute and monetize branded video across the web. FM’s network of influencers is expected to pair well with Whalerock’s expertise in creating programming and managing online sites. “Our goal is to raise the standards in how brands effectively reach consumers across the country at scale through premium content creation and video entertainment,” LIN Senior Vice President of Digital Robb Richter said.
 
Although Amazon just released its third season of pilots, it’s already planning its next slate. Nikita actress Lyndsy Fonseca has been cast in a comedy called Down Dog, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Brad Silberling (Reign) will direct the pilot, which centers on a low-ambition surfer who’s left in charge of his ex-girlfriend’s yoga studio.
 
The Orchard teamed up with Funny or Die and Unison Films to distribute the mockumentary What We Do In The Shadows. The Orchard will digitally distribute the film in the U.S., FoD will leverage social media and marketing and Unision will release it in U.S. theatres. The comedy doc was written, directed by and stars Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) and Academy Award nominee Taika Waititi.

Move over, Netflix: HBO struck a multi-year licensing deal giving Canada’s Bell Media exclusive multi-platform rights to 850 hours of scripted programming, documentaries and specials. The TV giant will be able to stream all HBO shows no longer on the air, as well as past seasons of series including Game of Thrones and Girls

’s billionaire club just got bigger: beauty guru Michelle Phan welcomed her billionth viewer just seven years after uploading her first video. Since her YT debut, Phan has released her own line of cosmetics (em cosmetics), launched the online subscription service Ipsy and will release a book in October.
 
YouTube Space LA
and creators Kurt Hugo Schneider (4.5+ million subs and 925+ million views) and Sam Tsui (1.5+ million subs and 123+ million views) premiered the film College Musical last week. The movie was streamed on Schneider’s channel, and is available for purchase along with the soundtrack at iTunes and Google Play. College Musical originated as a YouTube series in 2009.
 
Critics called reality TV just a fad. Twenty-five years later, they’ve been proven wrong. But while the genre has made serious inroads into TV and even the Emmys, the producer behind Lifetime’s Dance Moms, Jeff Collins, says it’s time to reinvent, re-evaluate – and get real. Fox reality show Utopia got over 1 million online views ahead of its premiere last night, reports EW, with average views going from 13 to 23 minutes the first four days it was available. What kept ‘em coming back? Nudity (albeit blurred), fighting, sex and a medical evacuation. Series takes its regular berth Tuesdays and Fridays starting September 9 and 11 at 8p.

ADVERTISING
 

Facebook struck another major deal with an ad agency, sealing a $100 million plus two-year agreement with UM. The social network will provide UM clients with early access to data, premium (video) ads and preferred pricing. BMW was the first client to use FB’s Premium Video, in a campaign that launched over the weekend; Sony Pictures Entertainment will be up next. FB also partnered with Publicis Groupe, Omnicom and others earlier this year.

 
 
AD PLATFORMS
 

Native ad tech company DistroScale launched its first native digital content platform with partners Defy Media, The E.W. Scripps Company, Digital First Media, Omnicom and others. “It’s still early days, but what DistroScale can offer as a self-serve native platform will work for brands who want to do performance-based campaigns or more brand-building initiatives,” Omnicom Associate Media Director of Direct Partners’ Thomas Ray told Cynopsis. “Our clients come to us because of our familiarity with cutting edge new vendors & media tactics, and DistroScale fits the mold.”
 
TubeMogul added Nielsen’s mobile Online Campaign Ratings (OCR) to its suite of tools. “The big breakthrough with Mobile OCR is that marketers now know if they are hitting their target age and gender, regardless of what screen a viewer is watching on,” a TubeMogul representative told Real-Time Daily.
 
 

RESEARCH
 

Marketers would run more cross-channel campaigns if they knew they were able to better measure mobile ad performance, according to a new study from Acxiom and 4INFO. The research found that 42 percent of respondents listed their top challenge as the inability to target the same user across platforms (see above item), and only 13 percent reported feeling confident in their ability to measure cross-channels. “The consumer has already voted with their eyeballs, wallets, and their attention span on their mobile devices,” Acxiom Vice-President of Partner and Product Strategy Josh Herman said. “The key now is helping the advertiser catch up to the ubiquitous consumer behavior in a way that gives them empirical confidence as mobile ads they buy find their audience and impact sales.”

Bridget Hunnicutt will serve as Executive Vice President of Development for Flight 33 Productions. She was most recently the Senior Vice President Global Development and Production at National Geographic Channel.
 
BET appointed Kay Madati as Executive Vice President and Chief Digital Officer. Madati was most recently Head of Entertainment and Media on the Global Marketing Solutions team at Facebook Inc.
 
Steven Rice
has been promoted to Executive Vice President, Marketing & Digital Engagement at Donato Media. Rice, who joined the agency in January 2014, formerly served as Senior Vice President at Harrison & Shriftman overseeing the agency’s Lifestyle Division.
