After tasting success with its Awards show, Nickelodeon is now diving deep into sports programming, locking in partnerships with the NFL, MLS and NASCAR for a prime-time, sports-themed block of programming to run on its Nicktoons channel. The two-hour NickSports block starts this week, running from 9-11p on Wednesdays. Programming will feature a blend of original and acquired long and short-form content from the leagues, such as the half-hour magazine-format show NFL Rush and the short-form MLS segment Mike Magee’s Day Off; new episodes of the animated series Wild Grinders, documentary programming including the TV premiere of Little Ballers, about the Amateur Athletic Union; as well as movies such as Bend it Like Beckham, Space Jam, Cool Runnings and Speed Racer.

Magic Johnson’s ASPiRE locked in an agreement that broadens its ties with Historically Black College & University (HBCU) sports. The channel will kick off a new deal with Urban Sports & Entertainment Group to carry 11 live and encore HBCU football games, running from Sept. 6 – Nov. 15. Six football games will run live, with three intra-collegiate match-ups exclusive to ASPiRE. The live games include the Inaugural Classic (Alabama State/Tennessee State), the annual Tuskegee/Morehouse Classic, and the annual CIAA Championship Game. HBCU Playback Game of the Week will be hosted by Rashan Ali and Doug Stewart. These games and more will be spotlighted during the all-new season of the weekly black college sports series Inside the Game.
NBCUniversal revealed its plans to surround NFL Kickoff 2014 with company assets via its “Big Event Strategy.” The game, set for tomorrow evening on NBC, will also feature a pre-game concert with Pharrell Williams, as well as Soundgarden while Sunday Night Football kicks off on Sunday. Participating in the promotion will be Golf Channel, NBCSN, NBC Sports Regional Networks, NBC Sports Radio, Today, E!, as well as the likes of Access Hollywood and America’s Got Talent.
ESPN2’s Colin’s Football Show launches its second season on Sunday at 9a with a new look and new segments. The hour-long series debuts a fresh open, penned and performed by comedian and recording artist Rodney Carrington, as well as new segments that include Colin’s Cartoons minute-long animations telling stories as related by former NFL players; Meat Sandwich; and a “comedic and face-paced digital piece with fantasy football advice from Matthew Berry.”
FOX Sports kicks off coverage of the 2016 UEFA European Championship Qualifiers and international friendlies next week with matches running through November. The action begins with an international friendly between England/Norway today at 2:55p on FOX Sports 2. Rob Stone hosts pregame, halftime and post-game UEFA Champions League coverage with analysts Eric Wynalda and Warren Barton.
HBO Sports announced plans for Bernard “The Alien” Hopkins takes on Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev to battle in a light heavyweight unification title bout on Nov. 8, live on HBO World Championship Boxing.
The American Basketball Association welcomed the Miami Midnites to the league, with the team set to tip off play in November. The Midnites are the defending Florida Basketball Association champions and the official Minor League affiliate of the Maccabi Haifa team of the Israeli Basketball Super League. The team is owned by Triangle Financial Services.
SNY revealed the network’s on-air talent for its coverage of the 2014 Jets season featuring a mix of new names joining established SNY veterans Brian Custer, Ray Lucas, and Jeane Coakley. New faces include former Jets safety Erik Coleman, who will serve as studio analyst alongside Ray Lucas throughout the season. Meanwhile, Jets Post Game Live brings in former Jets linebacker Chad Cascadden, who joins Mike Westhoff, Custer and Coakley following every Jets game. Finally, Mike Garafolo joins the Jets Extra Point crew this season.

CBS Sports and NFL Network will be spiking this year’s season of Thursday Night Football with Jay-Z’s song Run This Town, featuring Rihanna. The open will be accompanied by the narration from Don Cheadle, setting the “scene to kick off the NFL week on Thursday nights, highlighting the division rivalry games. And, asking the question, who will Run This Town?” The schedule kicks off on September 11 with the Steelers/Ravens and offers a customized open each week highlighting the teams and storylines.
ESPN’s newest This is SportsCenter spot plays Fantasy SportsCenter, showcasing NFL mascots, players, cheerleaders and officials in a draft room making their selections from ESPN talent. Participants include New York Giants’ Victor Cruz and New Orleans Saints’ Jimmy Graham along with Philadelphia Eagles’ mascot Swoop, New England Patriots’ mascot Pat the Patriot, two New York Jets cheerleaders and SportsCenter anchors Kevin Negandhi and Bram Weinstein.
The long-standing rivalry between USC and UCLA has a new sponsor. The Southern California BMW Centers entered a deal to become the exclusive sponsor of the rivalry series and will present the winner with the SoCal BMW Crosstown Cup, formally known as The Gauntlet. The award will be awarded annually to the athletic department with the most success against the other in head-to-head matchups in all sports during an academic year.
Ahead of the new Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, NASCAR unveiled “unprecedented” media and fan activities throughout the sport’s postseason. Initiatives include: Chase Across North America, a multi-country media blitz featuring 16 different drivers across 16 different cities; Chase Media Day; Contender Media Day and Eliminator Media Day; and Championship Media Day.
Forward Market Media, the company behind TeamTix, launched a “first-of-its kind” reservation system with American Airlines that allows fans to secure flights to the College Football Championship if their team qualifies. Previously, the company launched a CFP reservation system that allows fans to reserve face-value tickets to the first College Football Playoff National Championship at face-value. If their team qualifies to play, the fan will be obligated to purchase that ticket at face value. If the team they specify does not qualify, the reservations expire and the fan forfeits only the reservation fees.
The NFL app on Xbox has been refreshed and is live for fans. According to the company, the NFL app for Xbox One and Windows 8 brings NFL fans “a more immersive and interactive means of experiencing” the sport, incorporating Microsoft’s Snap feature for in-game video highlights, fantasy scoring and stats as fans watch games live. In addition, the NFL app is now connected to NFL.com and CBS Sports.com fantasy leagues.
In addition, ESPN Fantasy Football is now available on the ESPN on Xbox One app. The new feature allows users to view their team match-ups, standings and scoreboards in real time. Updates will also be viewable via Snap Mode, allowing users to multitask by snapping updates of their fantasy football team onto the right side of the screen while continuing to play their favorite game or watch Live TV.
CBSSports.com launches the 2014 football season with new experts that will see the likes of Bart Scott, Tracy Wolfson, Amy Trask and Anita Marks all contributing to pro and fantasy football programming on CBSSports.com. In addition, Hank Goldberg will make picks regularly throughout the season. In addition, the platform will double its live streaming hours this season and increase on-demand video production with programming like Thursday Night Live (6:30-8:30p); Fantasy Football Today; and Verizon Halftime Show.
The Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup will offer fans the chance to predict the perfect Chase starting Sunday on NASCAR.com. Fans who fill out a perfect Chase Grid from the Challenger Round, which begins at Chicagoland Speedway, to the Championship Round at Homestead-Miami Speedway could win $100,000. The Perfect Chase Grid Challenge was designed by Omnigon for NASCAR. NASCAR.com will also offer a round-by-round game called Chase Grid Battle allowing entrants to predict which drivers they think will advance, but one round at a time.
ESPN promoted Marie Donoghue to Executive Vice President, Global Strategy and Original Content. Donoghue’s responsibilities include oversight of the Business Affairs, Business Development and Gaming & Business Partnerships groups. “Marie possesses that rare combination of strategic business acumen and creative content development skills,” said ESPN President John Skipper. “Her expertise will be instrumental as ESPN continues to evolve.”
Mike Boykin and Greg Busch announced the formation of Bespoke Sports & Entertainment, an experiential marketing agency that specializes in tailored solutions for brands. The marketing solutions agency will look to offer “a focused portfolio of services for brands looking to maximize their investment in sports and entertainment.” The duo combine more than 50 years’ experience in sports and entertainment marketing, including a 20-year association as business partners, colleagues, clients and friends.
