Geotag: Geotags are directional coordinates that can be attached to pieces of online content. For instance, Instagram users will often use geotagging to highlight the location where their photo was taken.
 
 

TOP NEWS
 

You may have heard that a SpaceX rocket exploded during launch prep yesterday, projecting a massive plume of black smoke into the Florida sky. Well, that rocket had a payload, and its destruction is a big deal. Specifically, the rocket was carrying Facebook’s first Internet satellite. The social media giant is currently undertaking Internet.org, a major initiative to spread global Internet access to parts of the world with low connectivity, including Africa and India. This particular satellite, valued somewhere between $95 million and $200 million, would have covered sub-Saharan Africa. It’s unknown whether the company plans to spring for a new satellite (the satellite was likely insured, so cash probably isn’t an issue). It’s possible that Internet.org simply won’t get off the ground any time soon: Facebook’s contract with the satellite firm Eutelsat allows the two companies to terminate their partnership if they don’t have an operational satellite up and running by January 1. And there’s now a significant that chance that they won’t.   
 
Instagram recently, shall we say, emulated Snapchat when it launched its new Stories feature. Looks like its parent company is jumping into the Snapchat-emulation game as well. Facebook’s Messenger app is launching Instant Video, a new feature that seems to take more than a little inspiration from the Ghost. Instant Video is designed to share “quick moments with friends who aren’t right by your side,” according to Facebook. “Your video will float over the active text conversation that you can continue while viewing the video,” Facebook explains. “Your friend can watch your video stream and share a video back if they decide.” At least they’re not calling it “Stories.”

Dentsu Aegis Network has acquired the programmatic media firm Accordant Media. Financial terms weren’t disclosed. One thing’s for sure: Dentsu Aegis doesn’t want to fall behind when it comes to solidifying its ad tech and programmatic capabilities. Accordant’s proprietary technology platform, Accordant ATS, includes custom data models, analytics tools, bidding, and a data-management platform. Accordant’s 70 employees will join Amnet, Dentsu Aegis’s programmatic buying group. Once the acquisition is finalized, Accordant co-founders Art Muldoon and Matthew Greitzer (who serve as CEO and COO, respectively) will become co-CEOs of Amnet U.S.
 
For the first time, Twitter is moving to directly monetize Periscope. The Twitter-owned live-broadcasting app has partnered with former U.S. Open tennis champion Andy Roddick. Roddick will host a series of Periscope broadcasts for this year’s tournament, which began this week. Broadcasting from his Twitter handle, Roddick will provide gameplay commentary and answer questions for the audience. (It’s a shame he’s not playing himself; with nemesis Roger Federer sidelined due to injury, Roddick might have stood a chance.) Chase and Grey Goose vodka will sponsor; it’ll be the first-ever ad campaign on Periscope. 

 

The mobile-first ad network MobileFuse announced a new partnership with Cubeiq, a location intelligence company. The companies will launch a new measurement tool analyzing what MobileFuse and Cubeiq are calling “Dwell Lift” – in other words, the impact a campaign has on incentivizing consumers to spend time inside a physical location. The tool will compare a mobile ad campaign’s audience against a control group. The idea is to let marketers see whether they drove a consumer to a store, and also how much longer that consumer stayed in the store than if he or she had not been exposed to the ad. The tool is exclusive to MobileFuse.

VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY
 

Qualcomm is jumping into the VR game. The company, best known for making telecommunications and software chips, will launch a virtual reality headset by the end of 2016. Unlike high-end headsets such as the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, the new Snapdragon VR820 won’t need to be connected to an external computer. It also won’t require a mobile device, as the Samsung Gear VR and Google’s upcoming Daydream platform do. Rather, it will be a fully standalone device, subsisting solely on Qualcomm’s chips. In fact, Qualcomm acknowledges that its primary goal in launching the Snapdragon is to offer other hardware manufacturers a reference platform with which they can build their own headsets using the company’s chips. Qualcomm says that it expects commercial products based on the Snapdragon’s design to be available soon.
 
 

PLATFORMS + DEVICES

 
It’s a good day for cord-cutters. The digital media software provider Plex just added a DVR function to its web app. The app enables users to record over-the-air TV broadcasts and stream them via connected devices such as Apple TV and Roku. To make use of the new feature, users first need a networked TV tuner. (Under a new partnership, the TV tuner maker SiliconDust will support three of Plex’s new devices.) Users of the Plex DVR will be able to schedule recordings within the Plex app; the recordings are then added to the app’s library. At the moment, the launch is being labeled as a beta. For the time being, users will only be able to schedule recordings through the Plex web interface; recorded content, though, can be watched on any of Plex’s apps for connected TV and mobile.
 
 

EXECUTIVE MOVES
 

The Berlin-based music-streaming service SoundCloud has made a major new hire. Holly Lim will serve as the company’s Chief Financial Officerl, reporting directly to SoundCloud CEO Alex Ljung. Lim hails from Google, where she most recently served as Director of Business Operations for Google’s Cloud platform and Network operations. She joins SoundCloud at a crucial time: The company launched a paid subscription service this year, intent on competing with the likes of Apple Music and Spotify. Twitter acquired a stake in the company in June, reportedly worth $70 million.
 
MPP Global, a cloud-based entertainment and monetization platform for media companies, has named Jon Strudwick as its new Chief Financial Officer. Strudwick most recently served as Director at Five13 Consulting Ltd.
