Alexa, what’s a recipe for success? Discovery, Inc. announced the launch of interactive streaming service Food Network Kitchen, a collaboration with Amazon that will offer live cooking instruction, on-demand classes, ingredient and cooking equipment delivery, recipes and more. AT&T has no plans to sell DirecTV, AT&T COO John Stankey told the Wall Street Journal, despite reports that a sale was under consideration. “DirecTV is an important part of what we’re going to be doing going forward,” said Stankey, who acknowledged that while AT&T had studied its options for the satellite TV provider, “We’re constantly looking at the portfolio…it’s not unique to DirecTV.”

Vox Media has agreed to acquire New York Media. The deal combines New York Media, publisher of New York Magazine, as well as five digital offshoots, with Vox Media, known for brands like The Verge, Eater and SB Nation. Vox Media Chairman & CEO Jim Bankoff will remain at the helm of Vox Media, leading all aspects of the expanded company, while Pam Wasserstein, currently CEO of New York Media, will take on the new role of President, Vox Media. “I have long admired what Pam and the New York Media team have built, especially their ability to shape conversations with some of the most relevant and ambitious work in digital, print, and events,” said Bankoff. “This combination puts Vox Media in an unparalleled position to lead the media industry forward by focusing on the highest-quality offerings, most robust business models, and strongest company culture.”

Disney CEO Bob Iger said he doesn’t rely on the government anymore to handle issues. Speaking at The Atlantic Festival, Iger, who at one point considered a 2020 run for the White House, said, “The lack of collaboration, the lack of communication, the lack of trust that exists in our federal government is appalling.” Iger, whose book, The Ride of a Lifetime, was published this week, said he’s disturbed that the next generation doesn’t have the same sense of hope he did growing up, “even if the dream is just leading a life that feels safe and comfortable, where the air can be breathed.”

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

Can a brand truly be inclusive? After he took the Adverting Week stage with Orange Is the New Black star and Smirnoff national spokesperson, Laverne CoxJay Sethi, CMO of Diageo Beer Co. and head of Smirnoff North America, sat down with Cynopsis’ Cathy Applefeld Olsen to dig deeper on brands and inclusivity. “Diversity and inclusion are really well rooted in our brand’s history,” said Sethi. “We serve over 50 million people in the US. That means, by definition, we are diverse – every income bracket, race, gender. This is our consumer and we want to reflect that in our work. I would like to see, going beyond the LGBTQIA community, more people of color in advertising. Not just in front of the camera but also making the work. We are underrepresented in the industry across the board.”

As for hiring Cox, “We didn’t hire Laverne Cox because she’s a black transgender woman, we hired her because she’s amazing,” said Sethi. “She’s talented, she’s funny, she’s humble. Traits we like to believe are close to our brand as well. One of the things I’m most proud about is the commercials we’ve done with her are in the top 5 percent of the total industry. This will open a door and create room for other brands.” For more from Sethi, check out Cynsiders.

STREAMING NEWS

After exponential growth in adoption of streaming between 2010 to 2016, the share of adult TV viewers who stream at least some of their TV content has plateaued for the past three years at around 65%, according to Horowitz Research. What is still growing among the 2 in 3 adult Americans who stream, however, is a growing reliance on streamed content. According to Horowitz’s report, “Focus OTT & SVOD 2019,” the share of streamers who stream more than half of their TV content viewing has risen from 57% in 2018 to 66% in 2019.

Overall, streamers spend 57% of their viewing time streaming, compared to 39% on traditional TV. As for the future, “The streaming environment will become increasingly cumbersome to navigate – and more expensive – with media companies like Disney and NBC launching their own streaming apps and removing their content from Netflix and other platforms,” said Adriana Waterston, Horowitz’s SVP of Insights and Strategy. “We keep hearing from consumers that they wish there were a service they could subscribe to, to pay one price to access all the content they want and have it organized all in one place, but that they can watch anytime, anywhere, on any screen. In a sense, consumers want an MVPD service, but with the convenience, control, portability, flexibility, and value for the money they get with streaming.”

Add Vizio SmartCast users to those who have access to Tubi. The free movie and TV service is now available on over 25 devices.

OUTtv, the LGBTQ+ television network, is now available on Apple TV channels across Canada.  Customers can subscribe directly to OUTtv on the Apple TV app for $3.99/ month

The Authors Guild is supporting seven book publishers behind a copyright lawsuit against Amazon Audible’s Captions, a feature that would let people read along while listening to books. “Authors and their agents will bear the loss of a valuable right and revenue stream, along with a loss of control of their work, if Audible is permitted to proceed with its Captions feature,” said the guild in a proposed friend-of-the-court brief filed Monday with a U.S. District Court judge. Audible contends Captions would help listeners comprehend and focus on what they’re reading.
