The 71st Emmy Awards aired live and host-less from the Microsoft Theater in LA on Sunday. It was just the fourth time in the show’s history that the show didn’t have an emcee (Homer Simpson gave it a shot, until a piano fell on him… Anthony Anderson and Bryan Cranston were on hand for the save), but there was no shortage of star power, from Michael Douglas to RuPaul, to the cast members of Veep and Game of Thrones (which tied the record for most wins for best drama), to Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda and Kardashians, among others. Actor/comedian Thomas Lennon took the place of a traditional off-camera voiceover narrator, offering a … lighter … take on talk as winners made their way to the stage. Highlights from thank you speeches included:

Ryan Seacrest will return as host of ABC’s American Idol, a job he’s held since the singing competition debuted on Fox in 2002. He rejoins returning judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.

 
Nextstar Media closed its acquisition of Tribune Media. The $6.4 billion deal makes Nexstar the largest TV broadcast group in the country, owning, operating, programming or providing other services to 197 stations and multicast signals in 115 markets. “The completion of our accretive acquisition of Tribune Media increases Nexstar’s geographic diversity and audience reach with national coverage and an expanded presence in top 50 DMAs, while offering complementary media assets and investments, scale driven synergies and further cash flow diversification,” said Nexstar Media CEO Perry Sook
 
Sinclair Broadcast Group sounded the alarm that viewers in 86 U.S. markets could face the blackout of 136 stations and Tennis Channel if a carriage deal with AT&T can’t be reached. The companies had agreed to extend their expired contract by five weeks, which ends September 27. “Despite the tremendous market power of AT&T, most consumers of AT&T and DirecTV do have some other alternatives to receive our in-demand programming,” said Sinclair SVP and General Counsel David Gibber. “Although it would be unfortunate to lose AT&T and DirecTV as customers, we are simply not prepared to sell our programming to them at the below market rates they are demanding due to their overwhelming market power.”
 
Good news/bad news for GLOW fans: Netflix renewed the comedy for a fourth season, but it will be the show’s last. Series creators Carly Mensch and Liz Flahive will be back as showrunners.
 
Bianna Golodryga, who exited as co-host of CBS This Morning in April, has landed a full-time post at CNN, as Senior Global Affairs Analyst. “Given the renewed focus on news abroad, I’m thrilled to be full time at the place I’ve always felt at home,” wrote Golodryga on Twitter. Golodryga joined CNN and CBS News in 2017.
 
Viacom acquired exclusive cable rights to all 180 episodes of Seinfeld, from Sony Pictures Television. Beginning in October 2021, the full library of episodes from the iconic comedy will air on Viacom’s entertainment brands, including Comedy Central, Paramount Network and TV Land, with catch-up episodes available through Viacom brands via authenticated video on demand, websites and apps. “We’re extremely proud to bring this little-known series to our viewers. With the right programming and promotion, we believe we’ll finally get Seinfeld the recognition it truly deserves, as merely the greatest sitcom of all-time,” said Kent Alterman, President of Comedy Central, Paramount Network, TV Land and Vandelay Industries. Streaming rights for Jerry, Elaine, Kramer and Co. move to Netflix in 2021.

HBO Max confirmed production of UNpregnant, adapted from the HarperCollins YA novel authors Jenni Hendriks (How I Met Your Mother) and Ted Caplan (music editor for The Hate U Give). From PICTURESTART and Berlanti Productions, film tackles complicated friendships and the road to adulthood, all while in a stolen El Camino. Production starts in New Mexico this fall.
 
Lifetime committed to two more seasons of Married at First Sight, launching season ten on New Year’s Day, 2020, supersized with two hours each night, and five new couples. Reality show has ranked as the net’s #1 series for the past two years, with last season’s finale posting season highs among A25-54 (992,000) and W25.54 (772,000) in Live+3 Nielsens.
 
Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood) inked a first-look overall television deal with Big Beach, through her Defiant By Nature. Heller will develop and produce new series and specials, some of she may direct. Defiant By Nature will focus on stories that uplift, inspire and entertain, “while simultaneously shining bright lights on women and non-binary creators,” according to Heller and Big Beach. Heller will serve as President/Founder along with Havilah Brewster as Head of Development and Production.
 
Smithsonian Channel is getting wilder. The net announced an expanded commitment to wildlife programming and initiatives, including a green light for two new documentaries. Yukon’s Wild Grizzlies is a one-hour wildlife documentary from Omnifilm Entertainment in co-production with Canadian broadcaster Knowledge Network, and one-hour special Pride of Pumas combines Chilean filmmaker René Araneda’s in knowledge of the Torres del Paine National Park pumas with wildlife expert Casey Anderson’s tracking abilities. Smithsonian Channel is also sponsoring the first annual Santiago Wild film festival, to be held in Santiago, Chile from December 3-6.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES
 
E!’s Botched is back for season six on Tuesday, November 5 at 10p. Ahead of the premiere, the net is offering a special highlighting the most outrageous patients of the plastic surgery series, on Tuesday, October 29 at 10p.
 
HGTV has added two more special guest stars for its Extreme Makeover: Home Edition reboot: HGTV’s David Bromstad (My Lottery Dream Home) and Food Network’s Tyler Florence (The Great Food Truck Race). Bromstad and Florence will work alongside volunteers and other experts to help execute home transformations for families starting in early 2020.
 
STREAMING
 
Which upcoming streaming service is generating the most interest among consumers? According to a HarrisX study conducted in August, Disney+ is leading the pack, with 21% of U.S. households planning to sign on. Eleven percent indicated they plan to subscribe to HBO Max, and 10% opted for NBCUniversal’s Peacock. While current SVODs are drawing 25% of consumers A25-36, 17% Hispanics and 11% African Americans, a full 39% in the age demo and 20% of both Hispanic and African Americans indicated they’d sign up for HBO Max, while 37% of A25-36, 12% of Hispanics and14% of African Americans would likely choose Disney+.
 
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings acknowledged the challenges his company faces as more streamers prepare to launch. “While we’ve been competing with many people in the last decade, it’s a whole new world starting in November,” said Hastings at the Royal Television Society conference in the UK. “It’ll be tough competition.” 
 
Viacom has signed on as a partner for ITV and the BBC’s BritBox. The streaming service will offer original British shows from Comedy Central and factual and entertainment from Viacom-owned Channel 5 when it launches in the UK.

TLC’s third annual Give a Little Awards will take place October 2 at NYC’s Union Park Events. Hosted by Lisa Joyner (Long Lost Family), the ceremony will honor Taye Diggs (All American), actress, activist and author Skai Jackson, Whitney Thore (My Big Fat Fabulous Life), and three national contest winners who were nominated for making a significant social impact in their communities: Danica Roem (first elected transgender delegate of the Virginia House of Representatives), Barbara Buckley and Angela, Christina and Mia Varney (Annie’s Kindness Blankets), and Devin Moore (founder of #RaceToSpeakUp). 
 
Telemundo documentary Mr. Trump, disculpe las molestias (Mr. Trump, pardon the interruption), directed by Spanish journalist Jordi Évole, airs Sunday, September 29 at 7p.  Évole interviews community members, celebrities and prominent figures while gauging the Latino community’s perceptions about the Trump administration.
 
Four-hour live ghost investigation Haunted Salem: Live premieres Friday, October 4 at 8p on Travel Channel. The immersive, multiplatform event will investigate ghostly activity at three historic locations tied to the infamous Salem Witch Trials of the late 17th century.

With an eye toward a more trusted, secure and faster consumer experience, including 100% consumer transparency and control over data collection practices, the IAB Tech Lab and Network Advertising Initiative offered a 13-page proposal that calls for a standardized user token in browser environments that would eliminate the need for “cookie syncing” across thousands of proprietary cookies; enhanced accountability at the technology/system level; and the introduction of a standardized, controlled container for ad delivery when an ad relies on advertiser controlled javascript for rendering. “The current operational and political environments, combined with the constraints inherent within established internet protocols, implies that the digital marketing industry and browser community must collaborate if we are to meaningfully improve the consumer experience and consistently honor consumer privacy rights and preferences,” said the groups. “Our industry’s trade associations, which lead standards and best practices for our industry, have discussed programs and support for solving these issues responsibly that we would like to present for discussion, collaboration and joint problem-solving.”
 
IHOP Restaurants’ “IHOb, International House of Burgers” campaign was the Grand Winner of the ARF 2019 David Ogilvy Awards, honoring the research and analytics insights behind successful advertising campaigns. In addition to being named Grand Winner, IHOP Restaurants received the gold honor in the “Best Brand Transformation” category for a multi-phased research program that allowed for the brand to experience a powerful transformation through the combination of social media engagement and brand perception shifts, and a large uptick in consumer perception that they offer “great burgers” and “a great meal during dinner hours.”

Endemol Shine International secured a deal with ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE in Germany for the British period drama series Grantchester for SAT.1 GOLD. The deal includes Seasons 1-4 along with the Christmas Special.

TV measurement firm 605 announced that its President and Co-Founder, Ben Tatta, has decided to leave his day-to-day role at the company, but will continue as a strategic advisor and remain Co-Founder of the company. “Ben has been an important part of the development of 605 from an idea to start-up to becoming a fully-operational business with industry leading data and analytics capabilities,” said Kristin Dolan, Founder and CEO of 605. “He has been a significant contributor to our success. In recognizing the progress 605 has made over the past three years, Ben feels it is the right time to leave us to pursue his passion for startups and new ventures. US wildlife & science film company Red Rock Films has tapped British filmmaker Belinda Cherrington as Creative Director, and promoted Shannon Malone-deBenedictis to Senior Vice President, Development and Production.  Red Rock International, based in Johannesburg, upped Alexandria Christos to Development Executive.
 
IN MEMORIAM
 
Suzanne Whang, host of HGTV’s House Hunters, died September 17 after a 13-year battle breast cancer. She was 56. “Suzanne was warm, funny and kind with a distinctive voice that made everyone feel at home,” said HGTV. 
 
TV and transmedia executive producer Erica Branch-Ridley died on September 16. At the time of her sudden passing, Branch-Ridley, a recipient of a 2016 Cynopsis Top Women in Digital Award, among other honors, was Vice President-Product Development for HITN Learning. “She led from the heart as well as the brain, and had that special power of making everyone around her believe impossible tasks were possible if everyone respected and demanded excellence from each other,” said HITN.

 

Celebrity chef Carl Ruiz died at age 44, confirmed his NYC restaurant, La Cabana, on Sunday. Ruiz made appearances on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, and was a judge on Guy’s Grocery Games. “I’m heartbroken that my friend chef Carl Ruiz is gone,” said Guy Fieri. “I have no words to describe what a great friend he was to me and my family. His ability to make me laugh and smile under any circumstances was only outshined by his talent as a chef.”
