Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) announced an investigation into Facebook’s lack of transparency around its internal research. The move follows a series of Wall Street Journal reports that include, among other revelations, evidence that Facebook has been aware, at least since 2019, of the danger Instagram poses to the mental health of teen girls. “Teens blame Instagram for increases in the rate of anxiety and depression,” said an internal research slide. “This reaction was unprompted and consistent across all groups.”

The SEC is charging App Annie and its former CEO and Chairman Bertrand Schmitt with securities fraud. The mobile data provider is accused of making “material misrepresentations” to customers and investment firms. App Annie has agreed to pay $10 million to settle the investigation.

Apple’s new iPhone 13 series features longer battery life, new colors and upgraded cameras. The iPad mini also got an update – an 8.3-inch display, front and rear-facing 12-megapixel cameras, 80% faster performance, support for 5G and a Touch ID that’s relocated to the top button. Apple introduced marketing tools that enable app developers to create custom marketing assets like banners and images. Customized templates can be shared with short links that direct users to the App Store product page.

Google is opening up its Pixel Superfans pilot program, offering more spots for the insider access, VIP experience. Superfans gain access to a Superfans-only Facebook Group and other possible perks like private Q&As and events, opportunities to share ideas with the Google team, limited-edition swag, and more.

TikTok limited search results for viral stunt “devious licks,” which saw students stealing things from their schools. “We expect our community to stay safe and create responsibly, and we do not allow content that promotes or enables criminal activities,” said TikTok. “We are removing this content and redirecting hashtags and search results to our Community Guidelines to discourage such behavior.”

Snapchat has partnered with Sotheby’s and the Estate of Christo for a new global portal lens, “The Last Christo: Original Works for The Arc de Triomphe.” The lens overlays Snap’s AR onto the artist’s work to offer new experience of the installation.

Playco and Sway House are launching the first game on TikTok. “Sway Stories” allows users to play the part of a young, aspiring creator, who receives a surprise invitation to a party at the Sway House, and their choices determine how their story plays out. Josh Richards (“BFFs” with Dave Portnoy) and Griffin Johnson (of Sway House) star in the game.

South Korea’s antitrust regulator Korea Fair Trade Commission has fined Google $176.64 million, saying Google’s contract terms with device makers amounted to an abuse of its dominant market position that restricted competition in the mobile OS market. “The Korea Fair Trade Commission’s decision is meaningful in a way that it provides an opportunity to restore future competitive pressure in the mobile OS and app market markets,” said KFTC Chairperson Joh Sung-wook. Google said it intends to appeal the ruling, as it ignores the benefits offered by Android’s compatibility with other programs and undermines advantages enjoyed by consumers.

OpenVault, provider of industry analytics and SaaS technology solutions for broadband operators, is supporting wider availability of high-speed internet services through an initiative that simplifies participation in the FCC’s Emergency Broadband Benefit program. “Data is what we do: using the tools that already help our customers provide better experiences for subscribers, we can quickly and accurately deliver everything that’s needed to fulfill the mandates of EBB and deliver better broadband access to those in need,” said Josh Barstow, Chief Revenue Officer of OpenVault.

Habu announced the release of its CleanML product, enabling multiple parties to provide raw materials such as a model, model-training code, or dataset, for machine learning, with each respective partners’ assets remaining safe in the protection of its own clean room. “Imagine a scenario where one partner has a machine learning model and another party has data with a mutual opportunity to connect the two for inference,” said Matt Karasick, CPO at Habu. “The company with the data can’t share the data, and the company with the model can’t share their model. But both organizations can benefit from the output of the collaboration. This is exactly why Habu developed the CleanML and CleanCompute intelligence modules whereby distributed data, machine learning models, and/or containerized microservices can connect in safe and secure ways.”

Quibi has reached a settlement with Israeli technology company Eko, which claimed the short-lived, short-form streamer’s core technology feature, Turnstyle, was stolen from Eko. “This result will help ensure that Eko remains the undisputed leader in interactive storytelling technology,” said Eko founder and CEO Yoni Bloch. Terms were not disclosed; Quibi shut down in October 2020.

Adobe and Yahoo announced that Yahoo ConnectID, Yahoo’s people-first,
sustainable identifier, will power an integration with Adobe Experience Platform. The partnership enables marketers to leverage Adobe Experience Platform to create custom audience segments built on consent-based first-party data and expand reach through Yahoo ad tech. In lieu of third-party cookies, marketers will still be able to drive personal experiences consumers expect, while supporting privacy preferences and transparency.

Ampersand has made its Total TV Measurement solution available to advertisers and agencies. The new capability allows Ampersand to offer brands as well as local advertisers the ability to unify and consolidate the measurement of audience-based media delivery across all of their TV investment channels and activate across Ampersand’s full footprint of multiscreen TV supply.

IRI is launching IRI Lift for Facebook, which will enable CPG manufacturers and retailers to measure the offline sales impact of their advertising campaigns across Facebook and Instagram. The new solution combines Facebook’s media exposure data with IRI’s point-of-sale, frequent shopper and causal data to provide granular and household-level insights.

Programmatic media partner MiQ and ad platform Contobox have struck partnership aimed at improving Dynamic Creative Optimization capabilities. “More than 50% of consumers say they are targeted with ads for products or messaging they’re not interested in and 88% have seen ads for products that they have already purchased. These misaligned and ineffective ads can lead to poor consumer experiences and put brand reputation at risk, not to mention result in unnecessary advertiser wastage,” said John Goulding, Head of Strategy, US for MiQ. “Through our new exclusive partnership with Contobox and access to its True Intent technology platform, we’re connecting the powerhouse capabilities of programmatic advertising, planning intelligence technology, real-time data, and custom analytics that will help advertisers overcome these challenges.”

FuboTV has selected Magnite to serve as its preferred sell-side platform. Across Magnite’s CTV platform, overall live sports impressions grew 73% from 2019 to 2020 and increased an additional 26% in 1H 2021, ahead of the fall season sports surge.

Nearly 15 million viewers watched the livestream of the Met Gala’s red carpet, including all global views of the video both live and on VOD, according to Vogue. “Vogue’s Met Gala coverage delivered like never before, with original video content leading up to the night, covering the event itself and generating ongoing cultural impact around the world,” said Agnes Chu, President of Condé Nast Entertainment.

Respondents to Whip Media US Streaming Landscape survey subscribe to an average of 4.7 services and plan to add only one more. Other findings include:
· 70% of respondents feel that there are too many subscription services on the market.
· 32% canceled an SVOD service in the past year.
· The majority (60%) of consumers prefer to pay for an ad-free service.
· When asked if they could only keep one streaming service, 41% of consumers said Netflix would be their choice; followed by Hulu (21%), HBO Max (13%), Disney+ (9%), and Amazon (6%)

The number of US broadband households with CTV reached 86% in 1Q21, up just 1% from 2020, according to data from TDG. What does the plateau mean for operators? “When products and services near saturation, growth declines to the low single digits and the market becomes a zero-sum game in which one operator’s gains are actually the losses of another,” said TDG’s report.

Fuse Media has entered the streaming battlefield, launching Fuse Plus. The service, targeted at a multicultural and millennial audience, is priced at $2 per month for a stand-alone service and available at no extra course to customers of participating pay-TV operators.

Univision, UniMas and Galavision programming are now available on YouTube TV. The deal also gives subscribers in top Hispanic markets, including Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Houston, Dallas and Chicago among others, a new way to access Univision and UniMas’ local news, weather and programming. Univision’s network and local content is available to YouTube TV members as part of the subscription streaming service’s standard offering.

Redbox has partnered with film production and distributor Oscilloscope Laboratories to bring hundreds of hours of content to its Ad Supported Video on Demand streaming service. Films that will be offered include “We Need to Talk about Kevin,” “The Messenger” and “Howl.”

DEALS

Lyrics database startup Genius Media Group has sold its assets to holding company MediaLab.Ai for $80 million. Job cuts ensued. “We are restructuring the way in which original content is produced at Genius and as part of that some very talented individuals on the content and production teams were let go,” MediaLab said in a statement

Intuit has agreed to acquire the email distribution and marketing platform Mailchimp for $12 billion. Known for its TurboTax and QuickBooks software, Intuit said the Mailchimp deal will help it accelerate growth among small businesses.

TransUnion struck a $3.1 billion agreement to acquire Neustar, an identity resolution company that tracks and aggregates consumers’ digital activity for marketing and anti-fraud applications. The deal is planned to close in the fourth quarter of 2021, subject to closing conditions and regulatory approvals.
