Mayim Bialik and Ken Jennings will split hosting duties for syndicated game show “Jeopardy!” through the end of the year. Bialik, who stepped in temporarily after the abrupt exit of Mike Richards, had previously been tapped to host “Jeopardy!” primetime specials and spinoffs, while former champ and consulting producer Jennings was the first guest host after the death of Alex Trebek. Richards was fired after one day of filming over past offensive remarks.
CBS reality series “The Activist” is being reworked following backlash over its format. Originally conceived as a five-week competition series that had activists vying for social media attention for causes, with their efforts judged by celebrities, the show is being transformed into a documentary special. “’The Activist’ was designed to show a wide audience the passion, long hours, and ingenuity that activists put into changing the world, hopefully inspiring others to do the same,” said a statement from CBS, Global Citizen and Live Nation. “However, it has become apparent the format of the show as announced distracts from the vital work these incredible activists do in their communities every day. The push for global change is not a competition and requires a global effort.” The planned October 22 debut date has been postponed.
Soviet chess legend Nona Gaprindashvili is suing Netflix for $5 million over a line in the finale of “The Queen’s Gambit” that says she never competed against men. “Throughout her extraordinary career, she won many championships, beat some of the best male chess players in the world, and was the first woman in history to achieve the status of international chess grandmaster among men,” says the defamation suit, labeling the line “grossly sexist and belittling.” In response, Netflix said it “has only the utmost respect for Ms. Gaprindashvili and her illustrious career, but we believe this claim has no merit and will vigorously defend the case.”
Piers Morgan inked a global deal with News Corp. and Fox News Media that includes launching a new TV show for Fox Nation in early 2022, and joining The Sun and the New York Post as a columnist. “I’m thrilled to be returning to News Corp. which is where I began my media career more than 30 years ago,” said Morgan. “Rupert Murdoch has been a constant and fearless champion of free speech and we are going to be building something new and very exciting together.” Morgan quit ITV’s “Good Morning Britain” in March amid backlash over his remarks about Meghan Markle’s mental health. “Piers is the broadcaster every channel wants but is too afraid to hire,” said News Corp chief executive Rupert Murdoch.
Julio Vaquiero has been named anchor of Noticias Telemundo’s evening newscast. Vaquerio, who has been anchoring the net’s late-night weekday newscast, replaces Jose Diaz-Balart, whose broadened responsibilities include hosting a show for MSNBC.
Quibi has reached a settlement with Israeli technology company Eko, which claimed the short-lived, short-form streamer’s core technology feature, Turnstyle, was stolen from Eko. “This result will help ensure that Eko remains the undisputed leader in interactive storytelling technology,” said Eko founder and CEO Yoni Bloch. Terms were not disclosed; Quibi shut down in October 2020.

The Dodo has launched preschool-focused, scripted digital series, “Families for Furry Friends,” in partnership with Sesame Workshop. Presented by Target, the series combines animal stories from The Dodo with “Sesame Street” Muppets.
HBO Max and WarnerMedia OneFifty have partnered to acquire North American streaming rights from RMVISTAR for the animated short film “Anacronte,” which WarnerMedia OneFifty is developing as a multimedia project. The 3D CGI film from Mr. Bug Studio, available on HBO Max, focuses on devilish gods who arbitrarily torpedo innocent people.
Paramount+ has boarded ambulance rescue series “Skymed,” from Piazza Entertainment, Canada’s CBC and CBS Studios. The drama will premiere on the streamer next year.
Casting notes: Eric McCormack (“Will & Grace”) has joined the season three cast of drama “Departure,” set to air on Canada’s Global after two seasons on Peacock… Giancarlo Esposito (“Breaking Bad”) landed a role in Netflix’s “Jigsaw,” loosely based on the real-life story of $70 billion in bonds that went missing in downtown Manhattan during Hurricane Sandy.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES
Season two of HBO docu-comedy “How To With John Wilson” debuts Friday, November 26 at 10p. Wilson continues to film the lives of his fellow New Yorkers while attempting to give everyday advice on six new deceptively simple topics.
“Twenties” is back for season two on Wednesday, October 13 at 10p on BET and BET Her. From creator, writer, and executive producer Lena Waithe and Hillman Grad Productions, the series, follows Hattie, a masculine-presenting queer Black woman in her twenties, and her two straight best friends. The premiere will be followed by new companion after-show “Twenties After-Show With B. Scott” on BET.
FYI original series “Smart Home Nation” premieres Monday, September 20 at 10p with two back-to-back episodes. Hosted by Tanya Memme (“Sell This House”), the 10-parter showcases some of the most elaborate and state-of-the-art smart houses in the world, with technology like facial recognition security systems and temperature controlled backyards.
Adult animated comedy series “Ten Year Old Tom” debuts Thursday, September 30 on HBO Max. The series is created and written by Steve Dildarian (“The Life & Times of Tim”), who will executive produce with Nick Weidenfeld (“The Boondocks,” “Rick & Morty”).
Streaming made up 28% of all US TV viewing in August, flat according to the month prior, according to Nielsen, versus 24% for broadcast and 36% for cable. Overall TV viewing inched up half a percentage point compared with July, with the Tokyo Olympics helping give a 2.9% lift for broadcast TV.
Respondents to Whip Media’s US Streaming Landscape survey subscribe to an average of 4.7 services and plan to add only one more. Other findings include:
· 70% of respondents feel that there are too many subscription services on the market at and (most of them 85% say) it’s getting too expensive.
· 32% canceled an SVOD service in the past year. However, churn is spread out over all of the SVODs – Disney+, Netflix and Apple TV+ had the highest cancellation rates at a mere 6%.
· The majority (60%) of consumers prefer to pay for an ad-free service.
· When asked if they could only keep one streaming service, 41% of consumers said Netflix would be their choice if they could only keep one; followed by Hulu (21%), HBO Max (13%), Disney+ (9%), and Amazon (6%)

Banijay announced Canale 5 has commissioned Banijay Italia to produce a primetime run of “Star in the Star.” It’s the first international adaptation of the musical guessing show, originally created by Banijay Germany’s Brainpool.
Cineflix Rights announced European and Latin American deals for Israeli police corruption drama “Manayek,” and has acquired season two, which is going into production for Kan 11. ARTE is taking the series for France and Germany, and it was acquired for HBO Max in Latin America.
Federation Kids & Family has struck a series of deals for the TeamTO-produced animated comedy series “Presto! School of Magic.” The series, produced with M6 and TéléTOON+, and previously sold to RTBF and VRT (Belgium), has now been picked up by Discovery (Latin America), RTS (Switzerland), Showmax (English speaking Africa), NRK (Norway) and Quebecor (French speaking Canada).
To mark Blue Ant Media’s 10-year anniversary this September, the company announced 10 new and returning originals to premiere on its portfolio of Canadian specialty networks. The new premium programming lineup includes outdoor lifestyle and survival shows, paranormal anthology series, documentaries and The new commissioning slate will begin airing on the media company’s Canadian channels this fall and into 2022.
