IN THE NEWS

Netflix may soon have no more Friends and get kicked out of The Office, but the streamer landed global exclusive SVOD rights to Seinfeld. Seinfeld is a one-of-a-kind, iconic, culture-defining show,” said Mike Hopkins, Chairman, Sony Pictures Television. “Now, 30 years after its premiere, Seinfeld remains center stage.” The comedy classic will become available in 2021, when Hulu’s deal expires. Friends is heading to HBO Max, while The Office is relocating to NBCUni’s upcoming direct-to-consumer platform.

Built to last: HGTV’s A Very Brady Renovation delivered a 2.10 Live+3 rating among both the P25-54 demo and P2+ on Monday, 9, and drew a 3.91 household rating. The highest-rated season premiere in HGTV history scored more than 10 million total viewers, and posted a whopping 196% increase in the timeslot among P25-54 over year-ago levels and a 320% lift over the prior six-week time period. The episode also delivered a 2.46 Live+3 rating among W25-54 in the timeslot, a 273%increase in the demo for the timeslot versus the prior six-week time-period and a 186% lift versus year-ago levels. And the show attracted 40% more new viewers to HGTV, helping lead HGTV to its highest-rated Monday in network history for Live+3 among HHs as well as among P25-54, W25-54 and M25-54.

Also happy about the Brady house (but probably not as happy as HGTV)? Lance Bass (*NSYNC), who bid on the home but lost out to the network. Bass toured the house, renovated to match the original set design for the series, and his reaction was caught on the net’s Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. “This is incredible! It’s perfect,” said the Brady superfan. “I’m so glad HGTV did the right thing.” Series airs Mondays at 9p.

Stand-up comic Shane Gillis will not be joining Saturday Night Live after all. Following backlash over past racial and homophobic slurs, unearthed after he was hired last week, Gillis was cut loose by the NBC sketch comedy. “After talking with Shane Gillis, we have decided that he will not be joining SNL,” said a spokesperson for the show. “We want SNL to have a variety of voices and points of view within the show, and we hired Shane on the strength of his talent as comedian and his impressive audition for SNL. We were not aware of his prior remarks that have surfaced over the past few days. The language he used is offensive, hurtful and unacceptable. We are sorry that we did not see these clips earlier, and that our vetting process was not up to our standard.”

Was SNL right to let Shane Gillis go? Let us know in the Cynopsis poll.

In response to his firing, Gillis tweeted, “It feels ridiculous for comedians to be making serious public statements, but here we are….Of course I wanted to prove myself at SNL, but I understand it would be too much of a distraction. I respect the decision they made. I’m honestly grateful for the opportunity. I was always a mad tv guy anyway.”

After suffering an injury during rehearsals that required surgery, Christie Brinkley has been replaced on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars by her daughter, 21-year-old Sports Illustrated model Sailor. “Showbiz is all about getting a break, and Sailor and I both got one on Dancing with the Stars this season,” said Brinkley. “Sailor joined the cast when I got mine.” But while Brinkley joked about the swap, she wasn’t laughing when Wendy Williams suggested during her talker on Monday that Brinkley had faked the accident to get her daughter a job. “I’m totally shocked, because I have been there for Wendy Williams,” the supermodel told People. “I’m really stunned.”

Speaking of, the day of its season 11 launch, The Wendy Williams Show was renewed for seasons 12 and 13. “Wendy is family to us, and post-AM news, her program jumpstarts the day in our markets,” said Frank Cicha, EVP Programming at Fox Television Stations. “Plus, she’s got enough wigs to make sure the show never gets stale.” Wendy averaged over 1.6 million viewers and 440,000 W25-54 per day last season. Said Debmar-Mercury Co-Presidents Ira Bernstein and Mort Marcus, “Wendy’s enduring demo strength is matched only by its unwavering support among our valued station partners. Fox, which has been there from the start, remains a big believer in the power of Wendy to deliver the goods and keep its important morning news block viewers from going anywhere.”

Walt Disney Co. is pushing TV producers to accept a new payment formula, more akin to what Netflix and Amazon have crafted than traditional deals, as the November launch of streaming service Disney+ approaches. The LA Times reports that in place of backend compensation, in which creators get big payouts when series reach their syndication-friendly 100th episodes, profit participants would get a piece of profits starting the second year of a series, but give Disney control of all future licensing revenue. Producers would be eligible for bonuses based on success and longevity, said the Times.

Netflix canceled No Good Nick after one season. Comedy starred Melissa Joan Hart and Sean Astin as a couple who unwittingly welcome a teenaged con artist into their home.
