NBA MVP Stephen Curry and his Unanimous Media banner have struck a multi-year deal with Comcast NBC Universal. It includes first-look development deals with Universal Studio Group for scripted and unscripted television projects and DreamWorks Animation for kids and family content. Curry will also partner with other brands across the company’s portfolio for on-camera and creative opportunities. He’ll be joining NBC Sports’ GOLF Channel for coverage of the Ryder Cup, as well as creating original content for GOLF Channel’s Live From the Ryder Cup and GolfPass. Curry will also help launch a reimagining of the famous PSA campaign, The More You Know.

PROGRAMMING

 

ESPN’s Megacast of Monday Night Football, seeing the Raiders topple the Ravens in OT, scores as the most-watched week one MNF game since 2013. The matchup averaged 15.3 million viewers, and was up 42% over 2020’s week one early game, and 17% over the one in 2019. On ESPN2, Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli notched 800,000 viewers. 

 

The NFL on CBS delivered its second most-watched Week 1 audience since 1998, with a combined average viewership for Sunday’s doubleheader windows totaling 33.472 million viewers, according to Nielsen national ratings. With the expanded 18-week NFL season, CBS gained an additional national 4:25p, ET window which led to a +145 percent increase in gross viewership for Week 1, versus last year’s single header (13.674 million viewers). The Cleveland-Kansas City game was the most-watched Sunday telecast on any network, averaging 19.539 million viewers.

Meanwhile, NBC Sports scored big in the ratings race, too. With a Total Audience delivery average of 22.9 million viewers, the network registered its most-watched NFL Kickoff Weekend since 2017 and posted a 11 percent increase from last year.

Turner Sports bolstered its NHL game and studio commentator team ahead of its inaugural NHL season, beginning Wednesday, October 13 on TNT. Previously announced commentary team of Kenny Albert and Eddie Olczyk will be joined by Brendan Burke, who’ll provide play-by-play through the season alongside Darren Pang. Keith Jones will provide ice-level analysis for NHL games on TNT, with Jennifer Botterill, Jackie Redmond and Tarik El-Bashir contributing to telecasts. In addition, studio coverage will be hosted by Liam McHugh, alongside Wayne Gretsky, Anson Carter, Rick Tocchet and Paul Bissonnette.

The Seattle Mariners will host baseball’s 2023 All-Star Game at T-Mobile Park. according to multiple reports. It marks the third time the event will take place on the team’s home field, having last hosted in 2001 when it was known as Safeco Field. Plans are being finalized, say sources. MLB declined to comment on or confirm the news.

The NBA is discussing a midseason tournament. The idea, which was floated in June, was brought up again during a league competition committee call on Monday. The tournament would be a standalone event with prizes of $1 million per player on the winning team and create excitement in the middle of the season.

THE NBA G League will tip off the 2021-2022 season with an innovative new format. It features both a 36-game regular season and an expanded Showcase Cup; a 14-game tournament which begins on Friday, November 5 and concludes at the annual NBA G League Winter Showcase from December 19 to 22. The 2021-2022 regular season will then begin on December 27 with traditional playoffs and the NBA G League Finals presented by YouTube TV in April 2022. The NBA G League also released its complete game schedule for the for season. To celebrate the return to team markets, the NBA G League and its teams are hosting their first annual league-wide Fan Fest presented by Wilson between Friday, September 24 and Sunday, September 26.

A Football Life returns for a tenth season on NFL Network on Friday, September 17 at 9p. The premiere episode centers on seven-time National Champion head coach Nick Saban.

The 2021-2022 ACC women and men’s basketball schedules will be revealed live on two specials, Nothing But Net: Basketball Schedule Release. The women are up first on Wednesday, September 15, followed by the men on Thursday, September 16; both airing at 7p on ACC Network. Kelsey Riggs hosts both shows.

Season 11 of SEC Storied debuts Sunday, September 26 at 7p on SEC Network with “More Than A Voice.” The 90-minute film spotlights iconic football play-by-play voices from around the SEC.

In a special collaboration with ESPN and ESPN Films, Topps has created the 30-for-30 “Once Upon a Time in Queens” commemorative trading card set in conjunction with the documentary’s release on September 14 and 15. The four-part trading card set captures the 1986 New York Mets championship season and its players. The first sets, issued at 12p on September 14, will be available for one week. Wednesday, September 15’s set will post at noon and be available until Wednesday, September 22.

Butterfield is partnering with the PGA Tour for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. The event, held October 28 to 31 broadcasting live on Golf Channel, features full FedExCup points and an expanded field size from 120 to132 players. The agreement is through 2023.

The football season is officially back, and so is Tony Romo. In a new campaign the former quarterback reminds fans to keep it cool this season by prioritizing the three C’s: Couches, Coolers and Corona. No matter the score of the game they’re watching, fans have a chance to win big by entering Corona’s sweepstakes in partnership with Fanatics through a unique AR experience. More than 150 first-prize winners will be awarded $250 in Fanatics Fan Cash, and one grand prize winner will win a “Gameday Good Life Fan Cave.”

Upstart sporting goods manufacturer SweetSpot Sports has struck a partnership with Walker Buehler. The Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher will promote a line of products geared toward baseball players and active gamers. The company allows players to enjoy aspects of a real baseball game within the confines of a backyard or street.

DIGITAL, DATA & TECH

VIVO Indian Premier League has arrived on ESPN+. Every single match of the popular cricket league will be available to stream live in both English and Hindi; plus, the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup featuring over 45 live T20 matches form the United Arab Emirates from October 17 to November 14.

ESPORTS

ESPN+ has created ESPN+ MAS, a new, year-round section on the streaming service that will elevate sports stories and content for and about Hispanic and LatinX athletes, fans and communities. The next section kicked off Tuesday and will feature a curated and growing collection of more than 1,300 live events, 100 “30 for 30” documentary titles and at least 1, 000 hours of studio shows focused on serving Hispanic and LatinX fans in the U.S. Along with the launch, a new creative campaign is set to debut across ESPN, Disney and external digital and linear platforms to build awareness of the section and showcase all the content ESPN+ offers in both English and Spanish.

Pac-12 Networks struck a new content licensing partnership with RECUR. The technology company designs and develops on-chain experiences that allow fans to buy, collect and re-sell digital products and collectibles. The deal makes Pac-12 content the first in college sports to be available through NFTs.

Moonton Games and Estars shared the top eight teams advancing to the final weekend of the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang World Championship North American Qualifier. BloodThirstyKings, Lethal eSports, Extraction, FLY HIGH BONI, Peaky Blinders, Generation X, Moe and NocturnalDragons will go head-to-head to win a spot at the M3 World Championship. The event will be streamed live on Twitch, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube, beginning Saturday, September 18 at 2p ET.

G3 Esports has partnered with Comtrade Gaming. The two companies will collaborate to provide player account management and backend infrastructure for G3’s upcoming esports wagering platform.

Also teaming up are content platform Super League Gaming and Production Resource Group. The partnership aims to provide a full spectrum of event support to the esports community.
