“Only Murders in the Building,” – which debuted as the most-watched Hulu Original comedy on premiere day and also the most-watched comedy on premiere day across all SVOD titles ever on the platform – has, not surprisingly, been renewed for season two. The comedy, starring Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez, “has been the obsession of every executive at this studio, and our friends at Hulu have treated it like the crown jewel that it is,” said Karey Burke, President, 20th Television. “And now, thanks to the incredible audience response, we are so happy to say there will be more murders in the building – which is great news for everyone, except perhaps the residents of the Arconia.”
The percentage of females in speaking roles on broadcast and streaming shows hit a historic high of 45%, according to the latest “Boxed In” report, and 52.2% of the major characters on streaming programs were played by women. While women accounted for just 22% of creators and 19% of directors on broadcast, on streaming shows those numbers were 30% and 31%, respectively. “Streamers get a lot of credit for offering more progressive programming, and that reputation is, in part, well deserved,” said Dr. Martha Lauzen, author of the report. “Their programs feature more female characters in major roles and have much higher percentages of women working as creators, directors, and editors than broadcast programs.
The Advertising Research Foundation has called for the advertising industry to embrace greater transparency and cooperation, as well as to provide increased support for trials of inter-operable solutions that can address the gaps in existing single source approaches. “As more consumers move to SVOD, the overall ad inventory is reduced,” said Scott McDonald, CEO and President of the ARF. “This has short-term benefits for linear TV since it abets the trend of making it harder for advertisers to buy reach (a trend that reinforced valuations in this year’s upfront market); but the long-term is trickier since it reflects a growing segment of the population that may be ad averse. If we can’t get the targeting and frequency management right, we will undermine the efficacy of advertising overall – or at least the business model that has supported free media for a long time.”

Comcast NBCUniversal inked a wide-ranging Global Talent Partnerships deal with Stephen Curry’s Unanimous Media, including first-look development deals with Universal Studio Group for scripted and unscripted TV projects and DreamWorks Animation. Curry will also team with numerous other Comcast brands including projects for GOLF Channel that will be featured in Sky Sports coverage of the event across the UK and Ireland. “While Stephen is a world class athlete, his brand and mission transcends the basketball court,” said Jimmy Horowitz, Vice Chairman, NBCUniversal Business Affairs and Operations. “The reach of Comcast NBCUniversal’s diverse portfolio will allow us to collaborate and support Stephen and Unanimous’ goals and ambitions while making compelling and impactful content for a global audience.”
Claire McArdle, former VP of Comedy Central International Studios, and Rebecca Knight, former VP of international production and business affairs for MTV, Comedy Central and Paramount, have launched a production company, Collective Media Group. The company will specialize in premium factual content, with a focus on storytelling around iconic sports moments. McArdle and Knight serve as co-CEOs.
Netflix handed a 10-episode order to “Partner Track,” an adaptation of the novel by Helen Wan. Starring in the series from Jax Media – focused on an idealistic young lawyer struggling with her moral compass – are Arden Cho (“Teen Wolf”), Bradley Gibson (“Powerbook III: Ghost”), Alexandra Turshen (“Ray Donovan”), Dominic Sherwood (“Penny Dreadful: City of Angels”), Rob Heaps (“Good Girls”) and Matthew Rauch (“Blue Bloods”).
Netflix also ordered “Grendel,” based on the Dark Horse comic book series. Abubakr (“Katy Keene”) will star.
Gray Television has acquired Third Rail Studios in Doraville, Ga., from The Integral Group for $27.5 million. The production facility, developed by The Integral Group in 2016, is located adjacent to Gray’s studio, called Assembly. “Third Rail Studios is a pioneer in bringing film and television production to the Atlanta community, and we are excited to join forces to create an entire studio city to serve Georgia’s booming media industry,” said Hilton H. Howell, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Gray Television. “We are thankful for all of the work already completed at Assembly and proud to usher in the next chapter for the historical site.”
Sean Bean (“Game of Thrones”) has signed on to narrate Love Nature original documentary “Osprey: Sea Raptor.” Produced by Love Nature and CosmoVision Media Group, the one-hour special will profile the true story of a pair of raptors, a life-long couple, as they reunite having traveled separately across continents to the same location year-after-year to raise their young.

South Korea’s antitrust regulator Korea Fair Trade Commission has fined Google $176.64, saying Google’s contract terms with device makers amounted to an abuse of its dominant market position that restricted competition in the mobile OS market. “The Korea Fair Trade Commission’s decision is meaningful in a way that it provides an opportunity to restore future competitive pressure in the mobile OS and app market markets,” said KFTC Chairperson Joh Sung-wook. Google responded that it intends to appeal the ruling, claiming it ignores the benefits offered by Android’s compatibility with other programs and undermines advantages enjoyed by consumers.
FuboTV has selected Magnite to serve as its preferred sell-side platform. Across Magnite’s CTV platform, overall live sports impressions grew 73% from 2019 to 2020 and increased an additional 26% in 1H21, ahead of the fall season sports surge.

The number of US broadband households with CTV reached 86% in 1Q21, up just 1% from 2020, according to data from TDG. What does the plateau mean for operators? “When products and services near saturation, growth declines to the low single digits and the market becomes a zero-sum game in which one operator’s gains are actually the losses of another,” said TDG’s report.
A+E Studios and Ananey Studios are teaming to produce eight-part supernatural thriller “The Malevolent Bride,” to air exclusively on KAN 11, Israel’s public broadcaster. The show is the first collaboration between US-based A+E Studios and Israel-based Ananey Studios. A+E Studios will co-produce and secure global distribution for all territories outside of Israel.
French animation production and distribution company Dandelooo has secured several deals for “Billy the Cowboy Hamster,” a preschool series commissioned by France Televisions. The show has been presold to Super RTL (Germany), DR (Denmark), SVT (Sweden), RTS (Switzerland), NRK (Norway), Arte Editions, KMBO (France) and TV5 Monde, among others.
French animation studio Xilam Animation has secured a deal with Sony Pictures Network India for its non-dialogue comedy franchise, “Oggy and the Cockroaches.” SPNI will begin airing the s series October 11 on Sony YAY!.
GoQuest Media has concluded a deal with Brazilian streaming platform Globoplay that sees Globoplay acquire exclusive streaming rights to Serbian drama “Civil Servant,” a spy thriller produced by Telekom Srbija and Film Danas.
Zodiak Kids has signed broadcast and streaming deals across all five seasons of Novel Entertainment’s animated series, “Horrid Henry.” Netflix has picked up season one for Andorra, Belgium, France, Switzerland and Mauritius, in addition to seasons three and four for the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Russia, Iceland, Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Vanuatu and Samoa. For India, Netflix has picked up the show’s fourth and fifth season.

Drive announced sales for Voltage TV docu-series “Osama bin Laden: The Inside Story.” The series, originally commissioned by Channel 4 will travel to broadcasters SBS in Australia, Sweden’s SVT, DR in Denmark and NRK in Norway along with a major French broadcaster.
MTV’s VMAs on Sunday delivered a 0.9 rating among A18-49, down 17% versus last year (versus a drop of 50% for other recent awards shows). MTV notes that in their proprietary metric, “Total Minutes Consumed,” the show rose this year, drawing 1.40 billion versus 1.29 billion in 2020.
