José Díaz-Balart is joining MSNBC as anchor of “José Díaz-Balart Reports,” a weekday show at 10a premiering Monday, September 27. The job makes Díaz-Balart the only anchor to host national news programs on both cable and broadcast television in English and Spanish. He will continue to anchor “NBC Nightly News Saturday” on NBC News and take on a broader role at Noticias Telemundo as well as anchor special coverage across multiple platforms, including Peacock, but move on from his current role as anchor of Telemundo’s nightly newscast “Noticias Telemundo” at the end of the month.

Hallie Jackson, current occupier of MSNBC’s 10a weekday slot, will move to 3p, while continuing to work on a streaming show. Ayman Mohyeldin, who now anchors the 3p hour, will head a weekend primetime show, “Aymen,” as well as Peacock’s Friday show, “The Choice.”

Walt Disney/Marvel film “Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings” earned an estimated $75.5 million for three days versus projections of $50 million, and $90.0 million for four days, according to Comscore, with just $11.2 million spent on national TV advertising since May 3. That’s the best pandemic-era three-day result behind Disney’s “Black Widow” at $80 million. Unlike “Black Widow,” “Shang-Chi” did not have streaming day-and-date simultaneous theater openings.

Full season revenue for the 2020-21 NFL broadcast season versus 2019-2020 grew 2%, according to an analysis from SMI, topping $3.7 billion. NFL regular season linear TV eCPMs are on par with general broadcast primetime, while the NFL post-season overindexes.

Nominations for the International Emmy Kids Awards were announced, with 12 Nominees across 3 categories and spanning 11 countries. Sesame Workshop / Jordan Pioneers received the first nomination for a program from Jordan for the series “Ahlan Simsim in Kids: Factual Entertainment.” Winners will be announced during an online presentation on Tuesday October 12 at 9p on the International Academy’s website.

Out on Set, a free online database of queer film talent, is live and open to all industry professionals in the US and Canada. The initiative from OUTtv and Inside Out, Canada’s LGBTQ2+ film festival, will connect LGBTQ2+ cast and crew with production companies, studios, networks and agencies through an online database that allows users to search for talent and crew by location, job category, gender identity, sexual orientation racialized/ethnic identity and disability identifiers.

Rooster Teeth is biting into children’s programming via a co-development and co-production partnership with publishing company Albert Whitman Media. The companies will develop animated series for broadcast networks and digital platforms, starting with an adaptation of “Zapato Power,” from author Jacqueline Jules, and “Wish Library,” from Christine Evans.

CASTING

Susan Sarandon (“Feud”) and Anna Friel (“Pushing Daisies”) will star in Fox straight-to-series, multigenerational country music drama “Monarch.”

Abigail Spencer is returning to “Grey’s Anatomy” to recur as Megan in season 18, launching Thursday, September 30 at 9p. Spencer’s character was last seen in one episode during season 15.

Janel Parrish (“Right In Front of Me”) and Ryan Paevey (“A Little Daytime Drama”) will star in Hallmark Channel movie “Coyote Creek Christmas,” part of the net’s “Countdown to Christmas” programming event. The film is from Coyote Creek Productions.

Animated comedy “The Harper House,” created by Brad Neely, will star Rhea Seehorn, Jason Lee, Tatiana Maslany and Ryan Flynn as the Harper family, with VyVy Nguyen, Lance Krall, Roberta Colindrez, Tessa Skara, John “Spud” McConnell, Chris Diamantopoulos, Joanna Hausmann, Gabourey Sidibe, Nyima Funk and Gary Anthony Williams also voicing characters in the series. The show makes its debut Thursday, September 16 on Paramount+.

Jessica Pimentel (“Orange Is the New Black”) landed a lead role in Hulu pilot “Olga Dies Dreaming,” based on the novel by Xochitl Gonzalez.

Designers and married dads of two Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent will give family homes personalized renovations HGTV’s “The Nate & Jeremiah Home Project,” premiering Tuesday, October 5 at 9p. The six-parter will follow the duo to meetings with their clients where they hear family stories and help decide which sentimental possessions to keep, repurpose or donate. Once rooms and items are sorted, Nate and Jeremiah will renovate the house.

All 10-episodes of Tyler Perry Studios’ new scripted series “All The Queen’s Men” premiere exclusively on BET+ on Thursday, September 9. Based on the book Ladies Night, the one-hour drama centers around the life of a fierce businesswoman who is at the top of her game in the nightclub industry.

In The Know by Yahoo has launched “In The Know Style,” a fashion and beauty vertical featuring original shoppable series timed to New York Fashion Week. Five new series highlight the trends and talent important to Gen Z audiences.

Halloween special “LEGO Star Wars Terrifying Tales” premieres Friday, October 1 on Disney+. Jack Harlow, The Kid LAROI, Ozuna and Tainy have been added to the performer lineup of the VMAs, airing Sunday, September 12 at 8p on MTV. In more VMA action, MTV and TikTok have launched “Trending: VMAs,” a collection of awards voted on by fans exclusively on TikTok in categories like Best Breakthrough Song, Best Audio Mashup, and Best Artist x Creator Collab.

Endemically matched ads – those that align with and match the surrounding content based on vertical (e.g. auto ad near auto content) – drove a 23% lift in activation within the part of the brain responsible for memory of practical details, according to a study from Integral Ad Science and Neuro-Insight that revealed the role neurophysiology plays in advertising. Other key insights include:
Informational ads perform best when matched with an article’s key message. According to the findings, matching informational ads with an article’s message creates a very strong detail memory response, and drove a 36% lift in detail memory compared to when there was no match. Ads focused on an emotional response are best paired with content themes. Ads that aim to leave an emotional memory, a particular feeling or overarching brand perception among consumers performed best when placed alongside articles with a matching theme.Consumers recognize ads as part of their online experience – 63% of consumers viewed ads as part of their online reading, not disruptive or a distraction.

STREAMING

CNN appears to be researching potential price points for its upcoming streaming service, CNN+. Users on its mobite site are being given potential prices, ranging from $1.99 to $9.99 per month, with the mention of a seven-day free trial. Users can provide an email address so they can be notified when the service, slated for 1Q22, becomes available.

Cinedigm announced that The Film Detective, the classic film restoration and streaming company, has acquired Holland Releasing’s motion picture library of over 100 classic films and television shows. The library includes science fiction, horror, and comedy titles.

DISTRIBUTION

Hulu is raising its monthly subscription prices, from $5.99/month to $6.99 for the ad-supported version, and $11.99 to $12.99 for the ad-free tier. The change, effective October 8, does not affect rates for Hulu’s live TV service.

IMC Toys inked a deal with David Becker of Blue Plate Media Services and Andrew Berman to distribute their animated content in the US. Currently, “Cry Babies Magic Tears” and “VIP Pets” content is shared through the IMC YouTube page.

GOING GLOBAL

Comedy streaming platform NextUp has signed a partnership with London’s Comedy Store to bring stand-up live to subscribers’ homes. UK comedian Reginald D Hunter headlines the first of the monthly flagship shows to be live streamed, on Tuesday, September 14.

French animation production and distribution company Dandelooo will be unveiling two new animated TV projects aimed at upper pre-schoolers and 6- to 11-year-olds, “It’s Your Body!” and “Space Ham” (in co-production with Danish company MiniCosmos) at this year’s Cartoon Forum in Toulouse.

Dynamic Television announced sales for Syfy zombie drama “Day of the Dead” to Sky UK, SBS Australia, OTE Greece, NBC Universal Networks for France, Spain and Poland, and UK DVD publisher Dazzler Media. The series, based on George A. Romero’s classic zombie film, is set to premiere in the US on Syfy October 15.

IN MEMORIAM

Writer/producer Irma Kalish died September 3 of complications of pneumonia. She was 96. Along with her husband, Austin “Rocky” Kalish, she wrote and produced classic TV shows including “I Dream of Jeannie,” “All in the Family,” and “The Bob Newhart Show,” among others.

Actor Michael K. Williams was found dead on September 6 of a possible drug overdose. He was 54. Among Williams’ numerous credits were roles on “The Wire,” “Boarwalk Empire” and “Lovecraft Country.” “While the world is aware of his immense talents as an artist, we knew Michael as a dear friend who was beloved by all who had the privilege to work with him,” said HBO in a statement.
