IN THE NEWS

The timetable for Disney’s expected buyout of Comcast’s one-third stake in Hulu has shifted. At a Goldman Sachs conference this week, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said the companies have agreed to start the process on September 30 rather than in January. Roberts also suggested that the price for the “scarce, kingmaker asset” will likely go much higher than the minimum valuation of $27.5 billion set five years ago. “We’re excited to get this resolved,” said Roberts.

American consumers are spending more time with seamless ad experiences both on and offline, according to Kantar’s annual Media Reactions report. Key insights include:
· People have largely resumed their pre-pandemic social lives and are gravitating towards innovative, non-disruptive, and “opted-in” experiences. That’s seen by ad exposure trending upwards for offline tv product, sponsored event, digital OOH, cinema, and POS. TV Product Place was ranked as the #1 most innovative media channel.
· Consumers have ranked TV, radio, and TV streaming as too repetitive for the second year running. And while consumers no longer consider display, social media stories, and online video channels that excessively target using personal data, they still feed that social media newsfeeds and ecommerce do.
· Consumers don’t feel that any brand is being particularly innovative in their use of media channels or advertising. So established brands may need to start exploring new formats or executions to engage and entertain consumers.

Its carriage dispute with Disney has led to a class action lawsuit against Charter Communications. A Charter Spectrum subscriber alleges Charter has continued to bill for services – Disney-owned channels – it is not delivering. “Instead of providing the programming its viewers pay hundreds of dollars a month for, Spectrum, in the middle of the US Open, college football and the start of the Labor Day weekend – easily one of the busiest TV weekends of the year, decided to use sports fans and other Spectrum consumers as a pawn in a clear money grab,” alleges the lawsuit. The lawsuit seeks an order requiring Charter to provide the channels or reimburse customers.

Roku is laying off 10% of its staff, or about 360 employees. In an SEC filing, the company also said it is “performing a strategic review of its content portfolio, reducing outside service expenses” and “consolidating office space utilization.” Roku anticipates recording an impairment charge of $160-$200 million related to office facilities and an impairment charge in of $55-$65 million related to removing select existing licensed and produced content from company-operated services on its TV streaming platform.

Media analyst Brian Wieser projects 6% ad market growth for 3Q23, 8% in 4Q23, and 4-5% growth (excluding political advertising) for 2024. Wieser, a veteran of GroupM and IPG Mediabrands’ Magna who launched advisory firm Madison and Wall in February, writes in the company’s latest newsletter, “The US advertising industry experienced a period of massive expansion during the pandemic, following on a fairly good end to the 2010s, which also represented a period of above-trend growth both in terms of its own history and the economy as well. If anything, it could be considered a positive that the industry didn’t fall faster, or even decline over the past year-and-a-half, especially as much of the industry seemed to try to talk itself into a downturn last year by fearing for a recession that never came.” As for political advertising, Wieser writes, “During 2024, I expect that there will be approximately $17 billion in revenue realized by media owners from political advertising. This is almost triple the $6 billion media owners generated in 2016, although only modestly more than 2020’s $14 billion.”

Tubi has surpassed 74 million monthly active users and logged nearly 4 billion streaming hours for the first half of the calendar year. And the Fox Corp. streamer is just getting warmed up, said Anjali Sud, newly appointed CEO. “Tubi is now watched as much as a top 5 cable network, as audiences continue to embrace our digital-first, 100% free streaming experience,” noted Sud. “The platform continues to scale with 47% growth in ad revenue and 65% growth in total viewing time Q4 over Q4, and we are executing an ambitious strategy to define the next generation of entertainment.”

Paramount+ renewed “Mayor of Kingstown” for a third season. The Taylor Sheridan series starring Jeremy Renner – who has made a remarkable recovery since he broke 30 bones in a snowplow accident in January – is one of the top performing original dramas on the streamer.

Bob Brooks has been named an anchor and correspondent for the Newsmax channel. Brooks joins Newsmax from 6ABC Action News in Philadelphia, where he worked as a general reporter and fill-in anchor.

Telemundo has signed an agreement with actor Danilo Carrera calling for Carrera to star in various Telemundo Global Studios original productions, as well as participate in several of the network’s entertainment shows and specials. “I began my career at Telemundo practically as a kid, and now 12 years later, I return as a man,” said the “Grachi” star. “I’m excited to begin this new phase and kick-off the great projects I know we will create together.”

Fly on the Wall Entertainment (“Big Brother”) has partnered with candy retailer Candy Funhouse and its owners, NBA league MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and brothers Thanasis, Kostas and Alex, to create an unscripted TV series that will crown the first-ever Chief Candy Officer. “With the sheer volume of applications we’ve received for this one-of-a-kind position, we’ve found it difficult to decide on who would be the ultimate Chief Candy Officer,” said Jamal Hejazi, CEO of Candy Funhouse. “We believe the series will be a great way for people to see the selection process as we ultimately decide who is the right person for this dream job.”

OUTtv has commissioned a second season of competition series “Sew Fierce,” an OUTtv original produced by Sonic Nursery. The new season started production this month and is set to launch on OUTtv in spring 2024.

TECH

Viant Technology has expanded Direct Access, Viant’s supply path optimization initiative launched earlier this year, to focus on the largest, premium CTV content owners, who collectively represent over 75% of the addressable CTV market in the US. “Unlike other SPO endeavors, we are squarely and deliberately focused on representing the buy side and the CTV channel, and this intentional focus has translated into driving a more efficient supply path for both advertisers and publishers, alike,” said Tom Wolfe, SVP, Business Development, Viant. “Our program strengthens and optimizes the important connections within the marketing ecosystem while deepening Viant’s foothold in CTV.”
