Vice Media founder and CEO Shane Smith told an audience of British television executives that creating content that matters to young people is good for business and the future of television. Smith stressed that media had to respond to shifting demands of younger audiences, noting that Baby Boomers’ “stranglehold on media and advertising” was finally being broken by “a highly educated, ethnically diverse, global-thinking, hard-to-reach generation.” Regarding rumors that Disney is reported to be interested in upping its 18 percent stake in Vice, Smith said the prospect was tempting, as Disney would preserve Vice’s autonomy. “If you look at Marvel, Pixar and Lucasfilm, they all went through the roof after Disney. It’s a great place for brands. They don’t want to make Vice like Disney, they want to give us autonomy, make mistakes and be their laboratory.”
Bravo Media’s three-part reunion of The Real Housewives of New York City begins Wednesday, August 31 at 9p.
