NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
Cable channel Pivot will begin to air segments from Rainn Wilson’s Soul Pancake channel on YouTube. In an exclusive arrangement, the Mixtape by SoulPancake web series will be repackaged into six 15-minute clips for the TV show, airing every Monday at 8:30p ET. In each ep, Wilson takes guest stars into his 1970s van to chat about philosophical topics. In the past, he has interviewed Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project), Joseph Gordon Levitt (HitRecord on TV) and Tesla founder Elon Musk. The YT channel has 1.3 million subscribers.

Any press is good press: rapper Nicki Minaj’s new video for her single Anaconda broke Vevo’s view record, despite many parents’ disapproval of the song and the news that she would perform at the MTV VMAs over the weekend. Within 24 hours, the video hit 19.6 million views, swiping the crown from Miley Cyrus’ video for Wrecking Ball, which had held the top spot with 19.3 million views since September 2013. Minaj also performed well on social media platforms: #AnacondaVideoOnVevo delivered 854 million impressions from 145,267 Twitter mentions by 95,412 users.
 
For anybody who missed the first season of Fox’s Sleepy Hollow and wants to catch up before the second season debuts Sept. 22, there’s now only one place to watch it: Hulu. According to Variety, the two companies made a deal that gives Hulu the exclusive streaming rights to the first season of the Emmy-nominated series. All of the shows can be found on Hulu Plus, while Hulu.com will have five episodes available for streaming. Hulu Plus subscribers also will be able to view the new episodes of the show the day after they premiere on TV.

CONTENT MEDIA

 
Facebook developed a physical “mentions box” for stars to use at the Emmys to connect with fans throughout tonight’s ceremony on NBC. With Access Hollywood, fans will submit questions for their favorite stars on the show’s FB page, and then the celebs will grab the box and answer questions in recorded videos, which will then appear on the “Access Hollywood” Facebook page. In addition, Twitter will feature a zip-line camera on the red carpet and will have Retta from Parks and Recreation tweeting throughout.
 
Netflix
’s upcoming Grace and Frankie, starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, has just named its supporting cast. Scandal and Emmy winner Joe Morton, Enlisted actor Geoff Stults and Spin City’s Barry Bostwick will join the series, which is expected to hit the service in 2015. Tomlin and Fonda (who worked together in the smash 1980 movie 9 to 5) play characters who were once rivals but become friends after their husbands fall in love with each other….
 
…In other Netflix news: actress Lori Petty (League of Their Own and Tank Girl) will go back behind bars next season when she reprises her part in Orange is the New Black. Netflix also announced three new guest roles, being played by comedian Mike Birbiglia, actress Blair Brown and actress Mary Steenburgen.
 
Aereo is officially back to square one. The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals denied Aereo’s request for a new hearing to argue that it be recognized as a cable network since the Supreme Court compared the web TV company to one throughout its hearing. Aereo’s antenna web TV model was declared to be copyright infringement by SCOTUS in a case against broadcast networks in June.

Blu-ray
may not last forever as a viewing option, but Facebook is apparently finding another use for the discs. The company says they’re an excellent way to handle the site’s immense need for data storage. According to CNNMoney, “Facebook engineers have developed a prototype using Blu-ray discs that they believe could greatly reduce the cost of archiving all that data.” As is, only 8 percent of the photos on Facebook create 82 percent of the traffic.

ADVERTISING
 

Lexus took a page from the web advertising playbook, running an interactive TV campaign that allowed viewers to “skip” its commercial if desired. The 15-second and 30-second spots that aired from June 2 to July 13 asked the audience if they wanted to skip the commercial within the first five seconds of its airing, and use their TV remote to do so. The screen either moved to the programming or to a different advertisement if the spot still needed to be filled. The method proved successful, with a 73 percent completion rate.

HBO surprised Girls fans on Friday when the premium network released a teaser for the show’s fourth season on YouTube. The 30-second clip features creator and star Lena Dunham biking in the park and…well, you need to see the rest, but it’s typical Girls shenanigans.
