Good morning. It’s Thursday August 18, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Say hello to Hard Rock Stadium, courtesy of a new deal between the Miami Dolphins and Hard Rock International. The 18-year agreement will see the newly-dubbed venue serve as the home of the Miami Dolphins, University of Miami football team, Orange Bowl, Super Bowl LIV and the 100th anniversary of the NFL, among other events, including rights to host the Brazil Men’s National Soccer Team for a series of matches starting in 2017. The brand also becomes the official Dolphins hotel and resort, casual restaurant partner and hospitality sponsor.

“Hard Rock Stadium will be a global entertainment destination and we are excited to enter this long-term partnership with Hard Rock International, an iconic worldwide brand that continues to grow,” Miami Dolphins President & CEO Tom Garfinkel said. “They are synonymous with music and entertainment and have a rich history of philanthropy and community engagement.”

ON THE AIR

Through 11 days, NBCSN has seen its primetime coverage of the Rio Olympics ranks as the best primetime stretch in the network’s history, according to Nielsen data. Overall, Tuesday’s primetime Rio Olympics coverage posted a Total Audience Delivery average of 25.6 million viewers with a 15.2 household rating for the NBCU family with NBC knocking an average of 24.1 million viewers with a 14.3/25 household rating for its coverage. 

FOX Sports lined up its talent roster for the upcoming college football season, anchored by play-by-play announcer Gus Johnson, analyst Joel Klatt and reporter Shannon Spake on the sidelines as the company’s primary team starting Sept. 2 with Kansas State/Stanford at 9p on FS1. Other teams are set to include Joe Davis/Brady Quinn/Jenny Taft; Tim Brando/Spencer Tillman/Bruce Feldman and Justin Kutcher/Steve Sarkisian/Petros Papadakis. In the studio, pregame, halftime and postgame coverage is hosted by Rob Stone with analysts Matt Leinart and Dave Wannstedt who are now joined at the desk by Robert Smith.

Speaking of college football, EPN College GameDay opens the season in Lambeau Field on Sept. 3 for LSU/Wisconsin at 9a. Rece Davis hosts and will be joined by Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard and David Pollack. This will mark the first time GameDay has been to Lambeau Field and the sixth time the show has originated from the state of Wisconsin.

ONE World Sports is expanding its reach, adding two new affiliate partners – Ohio-based Cincinnati Bell and Missouri-based Fidelity Communications. Both are launching through ONE World Sports agreement with the National Cable Television Cooperative.

Pac-12 Networks announced its talent lineup to cover a total of 256 live Olympic events this fall in men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, field hockey, ice hockey, men’s water polo, and cross country. New faces are set to include Joe Castellano, Steve Schlanger, Neil Sika, Aaron Heizen, Mark Rogondino, Nicole Branagh, Camryn Irwin, and Kelli Tennant.

The NHL announced that autoTRADER.ca, EA, Esso/Exxon Mobil, Geico, Pizza Pizza, SAP, Sonnet and Upper Deck have joined the roster of Official Partners for the World Cup of Hockey 2016. Each partner will soon go to market with extensive World Cup-themed promotional campaigns, consumer-focused opportunities, in-broadcast media buys, and on-site activations targeting hockey fans around the world. Samsung Electronics America and USA Basketball are launching new series, dubbed Chasing the Dream that spotlights at the game of basketball through VR. The series marks the second project in the Beyond the Frame series and offers the players’ perspective in the weeks leading up to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Content will live exclusively within the Samsung VR app.

New Era Cap announced that Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista has partnered with the company to design a line of lifestyle caps. The New Era X JB Capsule Collection will include 5 different caps and be available at New Era Toronto Flagship store, LIDS Canada Locations, and Jays Shop starting in late September.

DIGITAL & STREAMING

A fantasy football marathon on ESPN helped push the company’s own fantasy football to a record two-day haul, signing up more players on Monday and Tuesday than any other day in the game’s 20-year history. During the 28-hour marathon, ESPN counted 1,753,511 teams drafted, surpassing its stated goal of 1,000,000 for the event.
 
The NHL announced the use of a new player-tracking technology during the World Cup of Hockey, provided by Sportvision. The tech was used during the All-Star Game as well. “We will be deploying that technology in both pucks, which are being manufactured as we speak, and player tags that will be used throughout the tournament,” the league said at a press event, per PuckDaddy. “The quantitative data that we will be tracking throughout this tournament will include puck and skating speed. It will include puck trajectory. It will include distance traveled for players as well as pucks, and will include other key data points that you see displayed here on the screen – data points which include spacing between players, obviously the (graphical) pointers to let fans know who is on the ice at any given time.”
