Fox TV Studios president David Madden has been named president of entertainment at Fox, replacing Kevin Reilly. “Over his nearly 15-year tenure at Fox Television Studios, David helped transform FTS into one of the premier brands in cable programming, and we are elated to bring his stellar experience and reputation to the Fox network,” said Fox Television Group chairmen and CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman. Fox COO Joe Earley has been promoted to COO of Fox Television Group, also reporting to Walden and Newman.

IN THE NEWS

Al Jazeera America was stunned by an “egregious assault on freedom of the press” as it covered the unrest in Ferguson, MO following the killing by police of teen Michael Brown. Chief correspondent at the Chicago Bureau Ash-har Quraishi said, “We were yelling that we were press. But they continued to fire.” While the crew members are fine, the police action was “clearly intended to have a chilling effect on our ability to cover this important story,” said net president Kate Brian. Other journalists have also reported being harassed and even detained by authorities in the area. President Obama issued a statement Thursday saying, “Police should not be bullying or arresting journalists who are just trying to do their job.”

Robin Williams was battling the early stages of Parkinson’s disease, according to his wife, Susan Schneider. “Robin’s sobriety was intact and he was brave as he struggled with his own battles of depression, anxiety as well as the early stages of Parkinson’s disease, which he was not yet ready to share publicly,” said Schneider in a statement. “It is our hope in the way of Robin’s tragic passing, that others will find the strength to seek the care and support they need to treat whatever battles they are facing so they may feel less afraid.” Williams was found dead at age 63 on Monday from an apparent suicide.

Shortly after David Gregory, Meet the Press moderator for six years, tweeted that he’s leaving NBC, NBC News president Deborah Turness announced that NBC News political director Chuck Todd would take Gregory’s Meet seat. Offering thanks for Gregory’s “remarkable gift for holding leaders to account and getting answers on issues that matter to our audience,” Turness said, “We have some exciting plans to evolve and update the broadcast under Chuck’s leadership.” Todd, who will continue as political director, starts September 7; Andrea Mitchell will moderate the broadcast this weekend. “I leave NBC as I came – humbled and grateful,” tweeted Gregory.

The strike by Survivor post production crew was over in less than a day, after Mark Burnett’s Island Post Productions agreed to union recognition for the staffers, reports Deadline. Work resumes today for the premiere of season 29 of the reality show, as talks commence with the Motion Picture Editors Guild.

Today co-host Savannah Guthrie, whose pregnancy prompted numerous baby-related segments on the NBC morning show, gave birth to a daughter, Vale, on Wednesday. Today host Matt Lauer said he got the news via text when, after a gap in communication, he received a picture of the baby’s foot.
