Ryan Seacrest Productions and CBS Television Studios struck a two-year overall deal to develop scripted content. RSP’s scripted division will develop projects for broadcast and cable TV as well as streaming services; outside of the scripted deal, the home of reality hits like Keeping Up with the Kardashians will remain open for business to all networks.
Forensic evidence indicates Robin Williams’s death on Monday was asphyxia by hanging, California investigators said yesterday. Among the many people grieving the loss of the beloved comedic genius is The Crazy Ones creator David E. Kelley. “The talent was legendary,” said Kelley. “But equally inspiring, perhaps more so, was his kindness and humanity. A gentle soul, who touched us all.”
ABC News apologized Tuesday morning for showing live shots of Williams’ home on its website after the comic legend’s death. “When we realized there was no news value to the live stream, we took it down immediately,” said ABC News after drawing criticism on social media. The live stream was yanked after less than an hour. Also apologizing, for a poorly chosen remark: Fox News’ Shepard Smith, for using the word “coward” in describing Williams’ actions. If his words offended the family, said Smith, “from the bottom of my heart, I could not be more sorry.”
Half-hour roundtable series Live From E!, the net’s first digital show to cross over to linear, is expanding to three nights a week. Hosted by Jason Kennedy, Ross Mathews, Maria Menounos and a rotating panelist, the pop culture show will air Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays starting September 8 at 8p.
The NYTVF announced the selections for the Independent Pilot Competition. A total of 62 TV and web series pilots will be presented at the 10th Annual New York Television Festival, held October 20-25 at NYC’s Tribeca Cinemas. Awards will be presented on the festival’s closing night.
Fans can soon try for a piece of HBO’s True Blood. An auction hosted by ScreenBid will offer over 1500 items from the vampire drama, ending its seven-season run Sunday, August 24. Up for grabs: Arlene’s wedding gown, Eric Northman’s Fangtasia throne and vampire fangs. Bidding takes place August 20-25.
Filming on eight-ep Veronica Mars sequel Play It Again, Dick is complete, reported Buzzfeed. The Veronica cast is reunited for the web series from Rob Thomas, including Kristen Bell. Robert Buckley and Rose McIver, of Thomas’ upcoming CW drama iZombie, guest star.
The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the nominees for the 2014 Current Affairs and News categories. Winners will be announced Tuesday, September 30 in NYC. For details, go here.

Starz ordered 10 eps of One Percent, from Alejandro G. Inarritu (Birdman) and MRC, to star Ed Helms (The Office), Oscar-winner Hilary Swank (Million Dollar Baby) and Ed Harris (already onboard HBO pilot Westworld). Series comes from Media Rights Capital.
The NBC Owned Television Stations division of NBCUniversal is producing a half-hour special that will air on most NBC-owned stations and on participating NBC affiliates leading up to the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards Monday, August 25. Live special will air at 7p, followed by NBC’s Red Carpet special at 7:30p and the awardsfest at 8p.
ID enlists soap opera actors to host encores of series like Wives with Knives and My Dirty Little Secret for its Daytime Soap block, beginning Monday, August 25 from 1p-4p. “Soap opera fans know that they can always find their ‘stories’ on Investigation Discovery – the real life tales of passion – and, on occasion perhaps, a little poison,” said Henry Schleiff, Group President of ID, DA, AHC and Discovery Fit & Health.
Here’s a dating show with a twist: Myx TV’s Bagged pits three contestants against each other to win someone’s affection, but they have to wear bags over their head during their dates. Can personality trump appearance? Show premieres Thursday, August 21 at 8p, and on www.myx.tv the next day.

Telemundo announced performers and presenters for the third annual Premios Tu Mundo (Your World Awards): global star Juanes, urban music duo Alexis & Fido, urban music singer and producer Yandel, El General Gadiel, merengue superstars Olga Tañon and Elvis Crespo; Spanish pop singer David Bisbal, actor/singer Gabriel Coronel and band La Ley. Weeknight improv comedy panel show @midnight was renewed by Comedy Central for a sophomore season. Host Chris Hardwick said @midnight “has been an absolute dream come true for me – a game show of Internet jokes with my comedian friends.” The 40-week second season will run through 2015.
Season three of OWN’s Six Little McGhees launches Saturday, September 6, with back-to-back eps starting at 10p.
DirecTV is bringing back Rogue for season three. The satellite TV provider ordered 20 eps, with the first ten launching in spring 2015 and the second batch slated for 2016.
Agency 2C touts its part in the integrated promo for “Shark Week” beer sponsor Redd’s Apple Ale featuring Bob the Shark (Shark After Dark). The 30-second spot has Bob crashing a tropical party scene. “Bob the Shark is a zeitgeist summing up Discovery’s evolving approach with ‘Shark Week’ as a cultural phenomenon, so our goal with this project was to run with that feeling in finding a creative way to spotlight the Redd’s Apple Ale brand,” said 2C creative director Brian Eloe.
Kaitlin Olson (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) will recur on season four of Fox’s New Girl, as the fiancee of of Jess’s father, played by film director/producer (and All in Family’s Meathead) Rob Reiner.

Speaking of, TBS and MTV acquired basic cable syndication rights for New Girl. The 20th Century Fox Television comedy will air weekdays on the cable nets starting in fall 2015 in the five-year deal. Netflix already grabbed streaming rights. Season four launches on Fox Tuesday, September 16 at 9p.

The week ending August 8, ABC World News was up versus the same point last season in both total viewers (up 4 percent) and A25-54 (up 5 percent), delivering its most-watched season in 6 years and best news demo number in 3 years.CBS Evening News was up 4 percent year-to-year in viewers, according to Nielsen, and even in the news demo versus last year.
Wheel of Fortune slipped from the top spot among syndicated game shows for the second time in ten weeks, scoring 5.7 to Jeopardy’s 5.8. Before this season, Wheel had been in the driver’s seat since 2004.
Good news/bad news: CBS’s Under the Dome was the most-watched show Monday night with 6.85 million viewers, but its 1.5/5 rating among A18-49 tied a series low. Fox’s Masterchef was the highest-rated of the night with 1.9/6.
NBC’s Running Wild with Bear Grylls was up 15 percent week to week on Monday, hitting a 1.5/5 rating among A18-49. CW’s Whose Line Is It (.7/2) was up a tenth.
TNT’s The Last Ship was basic cable’s top scripted original the week of August 4 in Live + Same Day delivery of A25-54 and A18-49 and came in third behind the net’s Major Crimes and Rizzoli & Isles among total viewers. Time-shifted lifted the August 3 episode of Ship to 6.1 million viewers in Live+3 delivery, including 2.4 million A25-54 and 2.0 million A18-49.
The third season of Sportsman’s “Aporkalypse” programming stunt delivered year-over-year ratings in HH (up 119 percent), M25-54 (up 170 percent) and M18-49 (up 142 percent) compared to the same week in 2013.

Video ad tech company Teads added Eric Shih to their ranks as Senior Vice President of Business Development. Shih joined from Scripps, where he was Vice President of Business Development for digital lifestyle brand ulive.
Melissa Mick has joined Scripps Networks Interactive as Senior Vice President and Corporate Controller. Most recently, Mick was Chief Accounting Officer and Vice President Controller at MedExpress Urgent Care.
Political analyst and pollster Dotty Lynch died August 10 of complications from melanoma. She was 69. Lynch, one of the earliest female pollsters to advise presidential campaigns, covered politics for CBS for 20 years, until 2005. “We all loved and admired her so much,” said Face the Nation anchor Bob Schieffer.
HD TV pioneer and AXS TV/HDNet Chief Engineer Glenn Valenta died July 28 after an eight year battle with cancer. He was 53. In his 14 years with AXS TV/HDNet, Valenta provided the engineering acumen for a number of firsts in high definition, including the 2002 Olympics, the Triple Crown, NASA shuttle launches and the first series of HD MLB and NHL telecasts.
