BuzzFeed is about to get much bigger…$50 million bigger. In a funding round led by the VC Andreessen Horowitz, The New York Times reports the company will use the new resources to heavily invest in its renamed video arm, BuzzFeed Motion Pictures. BF’s video business debuted in 2012 after the company hired Ze Frank as EVP of Video; the site’s videos have since hit a combined one billion views. Veering away from its reliance on social media shares, BF wants to eventually direct its video arm toward Hollywood. “The results speak for themselves: BuzzFeed will generate triple digital millions in revenue this year,” early BF investor and Andreessen Horowitz General Partner, Chris Dixon, wrote in a blog yesterday. “I believe the future of BuzzFeed…will only get brighter as the internet solidifies its place as the central communication medium of our time.” NYT estimates BF is now worth $850 million.
Amazon’s third pilot season is finally hitting the Prime service in the U.S. and U.K. on Aug. 28. The five new pilot episodes include: half-hour comedies The Cosmopolitans with Adam Brody and Chloe Sevigny, Really with Sarah Chalke and Selma Blair, Steven Soderbergh-produced Red Oaks, and the hour-long dramas Hand of God starring Ron Perlman and Dana Delany and Shaun Cassidy’s Hysteria, with Mena Suvari. In contrast to Netflix’s approach, Amazon tests pilots with its customers before green-lighting full series. Last pilot season saw Amazon putting six series into production: Transparent, Mozart in the Jungle, Bosch, The After and kids shows Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street and Wishenpoof.
Conde Nast Entertainment debuted its first original web series for the new digital network The Scene. The comedy, Those People, is written by and stars The Office’s Carrie Kemper and Eastbound & Down’s Hayes Davenport. The service will feature originals and content from brands and partners including AOL and The Weather Channel.
Portal A and webcasting virtual communications company On24 created a hip-hop branded video This Is How You Webinar aimed at the B2B community. The vid’s companion site also features an interactive experience for visitors to make their own rap song, and share with the hashtag #WayToWebinar to enter for a prize.

British TV streaming service Acorn TV added the first exclusive episode Elephants Can Remember from the final series of Agatha Christie’s Poirot. The remaining two episodes in Poirot’s 25-year run will be released on Aug. 18 with Masterpiece Mystery! and on Aug. 25 with Curtain: Poirot’s Last Case. Acorn TV content can be viewed at Acorn.TV and on its Roku channel.

NCM Media Networks and TNT put moviegoers center stage over the weekend in a spot to promote Legends during NCM’s FirstLook pre-movie show. With real-time editing, audience members of a New York City theatre became “virtual extras” in the show’s sneak peek. The campaign will expand nationwide in AMC, Cinemark, Regal Entertainment Group and other theatres until the end of August. Legends premieres Aug. 13 at 9p ET on TNT.
SundanceTV continues to roll out its multi-media marketing campaign for the latest scripted drama The Honorable Woman. Using an app created by tech firm Layar, viewers are encouraged to hold their smartphone and tablets over images on Sundance.tv or Facebook to trigger clues for upcoming eps and commentary. The net also partnered with Brainfall to offer fans personalized quizzes, which already clocked in 200,000 quiz completions. Finally, Gawker and Jezebel sponsored content focused on the show’s theme of secrets, and allowed viewers to anonymously post secrets in the comment section within an article.
