OWN renewed drama series Queen Sugar ahead of its series premiere with a 16-episode second season order. From filmmaker Ava DuVernay and EP Oprah Winfrey, the series chronicling the lives and loves of three estranged sibling debuts as a two-night event on Tuesday, September 6 (commercial-free) and Wednesday, September 7 at 10p. It will regularly air Wednesday nights at 10p. “When we saw the first cut from Ava we knew right away that we wanted a second season,” said Erik Logan, president, OWN.
Iggy Azalea and her Azalea Street production company have inked a first-look deal with Universal Cable Productions and Wilshire Studios, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment’s scripted and non-scripted programming studios. Azalea will create content designed to reach a millennial audience with topics ranging from empowering young women to social justice and tolerance.
NCIS producer Charles F. Johnson, French producer/director/writer Joy Fleury and producer Karen Gordy have joined forces to develop Amazons. The live-action series centers on 6,000 African female warriors who fought against the French Colonial army and other enemies of the Dahomey Kingdom. A network is not attached to the project.
CBS Sports and active lifestyle and endurance events company Tough Mudder Inc. have struck a multi-year programming deal that brings Tough Mudder to broadcast, cable and digital on CBS Sports, CBS Sports Network and CBSSports.com beginning this fall. The series will provide an inside look at World’s Toughest Mudder, a 24-hour extreme endurance event. In addition, event series Toughest Mudder will debut in 2017.
Discovery three-part miniseries Harley and the Davidsons premieres Monday, September 5 at 9p. Parts two and three will air on Tuesday, September 6, and Wednesday, September 7 at 9p. “This is the type of compelling and honest storytelling that fits perfectly for Discovery Channel,” said Rich Ross, Group President of Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and Science Channel. “It is a story about brotherhood, an ironclad will to succeed and going against the conventional wisdom of that time.”
Animal Planet premieres The Million Dollar Duck on Wednesday, September 14 at 9p. The film dives into the eccentric world of the Federal Duck Stamp Contest, the only juried art competition run by the U.S. government. The film received the Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature and the Jury Award for Documentary Feature at the 2016 Slamdance Film Festival.
NBC ordered Warren Leight (Law & Order) and Paul Haggis (Crash) project Salvation, a medical series being described as the “first real-time hospital ‘extreme event’ drama,” to pilot. The network is also developing Gideon Raff (Homeland, Tyrant) drama Waking Lions. Series is based on the novel of the same name by Israeli author Ayelet Gundar-Goshen.
Jennifer Salke, NBC Entertainment President, confirmed that the Cruel Intentions revival, which failed to land a pickup last May, is still alive. All options are being explored, including a streaming-only rollout. “It was really a space issue,” explained Salke about the decision to hold off on formally ordering the project for fall, adding that she is determined to “find a place to put it… We wouldn’t have held that talent if we didn’t have every intention of finding an opportunity for the show.”
David Duchovny-led drama, Aquarius, which currently holds a Thursday 10p time slot, is moving back to Saturday night. “David and the talent are really important to us, and we’ll continue to support the show wherever we put it,” said Salke. However, when asked about chances for third renewal, Salke responded, “I think that’s tough.”
Programming wasn’t the only topic on journalists’ minds at TCA. NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt fielded a question about the network’s responsibility for nurturing Donald Trump’s celebrity to the point where the one-time Celebrity Apprentice star is now the Republican presidential candidate. “Isn’t the role of television to create celebrity in the world? That’s what every show does,” answered Greenblatt. “We were happy to have a show that was doing really well, with a guy who was a big TV star. It’s impossible to predict where it goes from there. I think it surprised all of us that he would want to do this, but I guess that’s what’s great about this country.”

CNN Films premieres Holy Hell on Thursday, September 1 at 9p and 11p. The film reveals the compelling story of life inside Buddhafield, a mysterious spiritual community that originated in the 1980s in West Hollywood.
