Sinclair Broadcast Group was fined over $9 million for failing to fulfill its obligations to negotiate in good faith with pay-TV operators. But fines aren’t enough to remedy issues surrounding retrans negotiations, said Matthew Polka, president and CEO of the American Cable Association. “The widespread duress felt by independent cable operators as a result of broken and outdated retransmission consent rules exploited by TV stations across the country is far from over,” asserted Polka. “This is especially true in the wake of Chairman [Tom] Wheeler’s recent decision not to recommend changes to the FCC’s good faith rules ….Notwithstanding today’s action, Chairman Wheeler should reconsider his decision that additional FCC guidance through the good faith rules is unneeded at this time.”
The Broadcast Film Critics Association will honor the best in documentary features and non-fiction TV at a ceremony at BRIC in Brooklyn on Thursday, November 13. Television categories include Limited Documentary Series, Ongoing Documentary Series and Unstructured Reality Series, among others. “We believe the time has come to focus attention on these important, informative and entertaining productions at an event dedicated solely to celebrating the positive effects these works have towards educating, inspiring and triggering social change amongst audiences,” said BFCA president Joey Berlin.

Pop ordered The Joey Mac Project (wt), a scripted comedy starring the New Kids on the Block star inspired by his life, from T Group Productions. NKOTB’s Donnie Wahlberg and wife Jenny McCarthy, Tim Gibbons (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Paul Greenberg (Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris) and Jenny Daly (Storage Hunters) are exec producing.
truTV gave the green light for Bobcat Goldthwait’s Messed Up Stories (wt), slated to premiere in 2017. Scripted anthology series, produced by Left/Right with Goldthwait, Banks Tarver, Ken Druckerman and Olivia Wingate serving as executive producers “will examine accepted truths and hypocrisies of our culture and turn them inside out,” promised Goldthwait.
Tom Fontana (Oz) has joined Starz drama series project Havana Quartet, intended as the first U.S. series to shoot scenes in Cuba, as executive producer. Antonio Banderas is starring in the Entertainment One Television production.
TV One ordered original movie Media, a drama following a wealthy family in the communications business. Penny Johnson (Castle), Brian White (The Family Stone), Gary Dourdan (CSI), Stephen Bishop (Being Mary Jane), Chrystee Pharris (Scrubs) and Blue Kimble (Devious Maids) will star in the project from Radio One founder Cathy Hughes and Susan Banks (Fright Night Files), slated for 2017.
Starz took the opportunity at TCA to announce it has extended its overall deal with Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson (Power). Starz and Jackson are developing superhero-themed Tomorrow, Today, based on a screenplay by Jackson. Starz also greenlit a second season of limited series The Girlfriend Experience, from Steven Soderbergh.
And there’s more in the works at Starz. A telenovela is being developed with Lionsgate and Televisa USA, created by Carlos Portugal (East Los High) and based on Mexico’s hit Teresa, focused on an undocumented Latina pursuing money and power in LA. Pussy Valley, created by Katori Hall (The Mountaintop) and exec produced by Peter Chernin, focuses on the world of pole dancers, and The Dirty Girls Social Club, based on the novel by Alisa Valdes, looks at six diverse professional women living in NYC who have known each other since college.
But enough about programming. What’s with the lack of Emmy nods for acclaimed Starz shows like Outlander and Power? Starz CEO Chris Albrecht noted at TCA that he’d been at HBO when series like The Sopranos cracked the Emmy code. “I was part of the team that invented how to campaign for Emmys,” said Albrecht. “Trust me, it’s not an even playing field….It takes a lot of money.” But no matter. “We couldn’t be more proud of our shows,” added Albrecht. “They are award-worthy.”
Do you think the Emmy nomination process is fair? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/.

TNT’s unscripted series The Race Card (wt) will follow NBA legend Charles Barkley as he explores why the country is so divided right now. The show is part of TNT’s new strategy of tackling “unique subjects and formats not found anywhere else,” said Michael Bloom, TNT and TBS’s SVP of unscripted series and specials. “With his enormous popularity and outspoken, sometimes controversial views, Charles is the perfect choice to kick off this new strategy.” TNT has also ordered a pilot for Rod Lurie‘s post-Civil War drama Monsters of God, from Brad Pitt‘s Plan B Entertainment. Action-adventure series The Last Ship will be back for season four next summer.
Also on the way for TNT: another procedural drama, along the lines of network hits Rizzoli & Isles and Major Crimes. “There is still an audience that likes a good closed-ended story,” said Turner Entertainment chief creative officer Kevin Reilly at TCA. On the subject of the experiment with reduced ad loads on TNT dramas, Reilly reported “very good results,” adding, “not only is commercial viewing higher, we’re seeing a nice ratings lift.”

A-list guest stars include Gwyneth Paltrow, Sarah Jessica Parker, Paul Rudd, Kelly Ripa, Whoopi Goldberg, Mark Cuban and Wentworth’s husband, George Stephanopoulos, among others. “I’m not saying this just because I created and star in the show, but the series is hilarious and Ali Wentworth is phenomenal!” said Wentworth.
