The ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12 formally unveiled the expected “historic” alliance designed to leverage 41 institutions together on a collaborative approach surrounding the future evolution of college athletics and scheduling, with the move coming following news of the SEC’s expansion to 16 teams. The three conferences stated that they were committed to collaborating and providing thought leadership on various opportunities and challenges facing college athletics, including: student-athlete mental and physical health, safety, wellness and support; strong academic experience and support; diversity, equity and inclusion; social justice; gender equity; future structure of the NCAA; federal legislative efforts; and postseason championships and future formats.

The alliance includes a scheduling component for football and women’s and men’s basketball that will begin as soon as practical while honoring current contractual obligations. A working group comprised of athletic directors representing the three conferences will oversee the scheduling component of the alliance, including determining the criteria upon which scheduling decisions will be made.

“The ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12 recognize the unique environment and challenges currently facing intercollegiate athletics, and we are proud and confident in this timely and necessary alliance that brings together like-minded institutions and conferences focused on the overall educational missions of our preeminent institutions,” said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips. “The alliance will ensure that the educational outcomes and experiences for student-athletes participating at the highest level of collegiate athletics will remain the driving factor in all decisions moving forward.”

“Student-athletes have been and will remain the focal point of the Big Ten, ACC and PAC-12 Conferences” said Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren. “Today, through this alliance, we furthered our commitment to our student-athletes by prioritizing our academics and athletics value systems. We are creating opportunities for student-athletes to have elite competition and are taking the necessary steps to shape and stabilize the future of college athletics.”

“The historic alliance announced today between the Pac-12, ACC and Big Ten is grounded in a commitment to our student-athletes,” said Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff. “We believe that collaborating together we are stronger in our commitment to addressing the broad issues and opportunities facing college athletics.”

PROGRAMMING

Jim Nantz, Tony Romo and Tracy Wolfson are on deck to once again lead The NFL on CBS’ announce team in their fifth year together to call the network’s marquee game each week, along with the AFC Playoffs and AFC Championship Game. The company announced that changes in this year’s NFL on CBS announce teams include Adam Archuleta and AJ Ross joining Greg Gumbel as analyst and reporter, respectively; Jay Feely teaming with Spero Dedes and Tiki Barber pairing with Tom McCarthy. Ian Eagle, Charles Davis and reporter Evan Washburn return for their second season together as the No. 2 team. Kevin Harlan again pairs with Trent Green and reporter Melanie Collins; Andrew Catalon and James Lofton are back together this season and Beth Mowins will call select games during the season.

The Western Athletic Conference and ESPN inked a new multi-year, multi-platform media rights agreement that will see over 500 annual events on ESPN+ and the ESPN App. ESPN will also carry select regular season men’s basketball games and the championship games for the WAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments on ESPN linear networks. All home football and men’s and women’s basketball games will reside on ESPN platforms, as well as selected other events. The WAC will also produce and air over 70 championship events on ESPN+ in the upcoming year.

Max Kellerman is officially bowing out of ESPN’s First Take, and will now get a new series on the television network in addition to expanding his ESPN Radio presence. ESPN Radio will reveal an updated weekday studio show lineup beginning Sept. 7, featuring expanded show windows (Sept. 27) and select new voices with a continued focus on cross-platform appearances. Kellerman’s role on the network grows from two to four hours each day by joining Keyshawn Johnson and Jay Williams on the network’s signature morning show.

After scoring double digit viewership gains this season across FOX, ESPN and Univision, MLS’s 2021 MLS All-Star Week tonight sees fans celebrate the best of MLS before battling LIGA MX in the 2021 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target at LAFC’s stadium on at 9p on FS1 and Univision. On the ratings front, the league is up 50% over 2020 in ESPN, averaging 384,000 viewers, according to Nielsen. FOX/FS1 coverage is up 15% to average 231,000, while Univision/UniMas telecasts are up 21% to average 302,000 viewers, marking the network’s highest viewership of all time. All three packages are also up over 2019 numbers.

Sept. 12 will see Carrie Underwood star in the debut of the 2021 show open for NBC’s Sunday Night Football. The 2021 Sunday Night Football show open for the first time will feature a virtual football tailgate as a backdrop for Underwood’s performance of “Waiting All Day For Sunday Night.” In addition, the show open will highlight user-generated cameos from some of the NFL’s biggest stars, as well as fans’ self-recorded video from NFL tailgates.

Tennis Channel’s coverage of the 2021 US Open will serve up daily lead-in show Tennis Channel Live at the US Open and more than 150 hours of encore matches during the two-week event. The action begins Aug. 30, the first day of play at tennis’ fourth and final major of the season. Tennis Channel Live at the US Open starts at 10a, an hour before matches start. ESPN’s promotional campaign for the 2021 US Open in New York will “express the joy of fans upon returning to the stands after last year’s event was held without spectators,” according to the company. The spot debuted yesterday across ESPN’s linear networks, features a team of dancers performing on the Grandstand court at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, on the grounds of the venue and in front of the nearby iconic Unisphere from the 1964 World’s Fair. “ ESPN’s exclusive coverage of the two weeks of the US Open – 130 hours on television and every match from every court including singles, doubles, juniors and wheelchair on the ESPN app with ESPN+ and ESPN3 – will begin Monday.

The Rich Eisen Show is partnering with The Gorilla Glue Company to get involved in NIL to celebrate college football’s “Toughest Player on Planet Earth.” Each Tuesday throughout the regular season, Eisen will reveal that week’s “Toughest Player on Planet Earth.” The winner will receive an NIL partnership and $1,000 cash compensation courtesy of The Gorilla Glue Company, as well as an invitation to be a guest on Eisen’s daily talk show.

Tubi and FOX Sports are launching “Sports on Tubi” in the U.S. with the platform now offering 10 live streaming channels for different sports, including professional football, baseball, soccer, collegiate sports from the ACC and Pac-12 Conferences, as well as nearly 700 hours of VOD content. Applebee’s and Uber Eats signed on as inaugural partners of “Sports on Tubi,” which showcases linear content from FOX Sports, FOX Deportes, NFL, MLB, beIN SPORTS XTRA and beIN SPORTS XTRA en Español, Fubo Sports Network, Pac-12 Insider, Stadium and USA TODAY SportsWire, with ACC Digital Network and Real Madrid TV coming soon and more channels to be added next year. “In our continued effort to broaden and enhance our digital reach, FOX Sports is thrilled to partner with Tubi to launch this dynamic lineup of channels and on-demand content, featuring hundreds of hours of programming tailor-made for sports fans,” said Mark Silverman, President, National Networks, FOX Sports. “‘Sports on Tubi’ will be the leading destination for free streaming sports content, bringing audiences closer to the games they love.”

Simplebet cemented a multi-year agreement with DraftKings to launch real-money micro-betting across the DraftKings Sportsbook. Under the deal, DraftKings will be able to offer Simplebet’s micro-betting products for the NFL, MLB and NBA and a new suite of college football products.

ESPORTS

Riot Games is shifting the League of Legends World Championship 2021 from China to Europe although a specific city where the tournament will take place was not named. The company pointed to “accessibility for the highest number of teams and their best players” serving as a key reason for the move, along with travel restrictions and COVID protocols due to the Delta variant becoming “even more complicated to navigate in 2021.”

Riot revealed that the LCS Game Changers program will take place this fall, running Sept. 27-Oct. 8 in a move toward creating a more diverse and inclusive professional League of Legends esports ecosystem. LCS Game Changers will be a fully-remote experience that will act as both training and scouting grounds for ten women who are high ELO League of Legends players. USA Rugby announced an official sanctioning agreement with Premier Rugby Sevens and the two organizations will launch the Talent Transfer Project, which is designed to welcome high-performance athletes in other sports into the USA Eagle and Premier Rugby Sevens pathway. As part of the agreement, USA Rugby will sanction all league events including the Talent Transfer Project camps and inaugural championship in Memphis, TN at AutoZone Park on Oct. 9.

Legends announced a strategic realignment of its global corporate management structure naming longtime Legends executive Mike Tomon and prominent financial operations executive Curt McClellan as the first-ever Co-Presidents of the business.
