IN THE NEWS
Fortuitous timing gave MSNBC a big boost on Monday, with “The Rachel Maddow Show” drawing 3.94 million total viewers for her interview with Hillary Clinton on the same night Donald Trump was indicted for the fourth time. Maddow’s was the number one show in all of television. Overall, MSNBC’s coverage of the indictment delivered 3.09 million viewers, versus 2.20 million for Fox News and 1.17 million for CNN. NBC averaged 2.87 million for the night, CBS drew 2.76 million, ABC had 2.4 million and Fox averaged 1.01 million.
TLC handed an early renewal to ”Outdaughtered,” ahead of the reality show’s season finale on Tuesday, August 29. Since its July 11 premiere, the series has averaged a .72 Live+3 rating among W25-54, making it the #1 series in its time period among all key female demos.
Ninety-four of the 200 most popular scripted series of the 2022-23 season have met the criteria for a ReFrame TV Stamp for gender-balanced hiring. The group reported a 4% increase in episodes directed by women to 40%, up from 36% last year, while 50.08% of episodes were written by women, up from 48.4% last year. Women in a series’ lead acting role rose to 54%, up from 45.5% last year. “Our research shows that scripted television has been far outpacing studio features in the movement towards gender parity, in front of and behind the camera,” said Andria Wilson Mirza, Director of ReFrame.
ABC News won the 2023 Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence, as well as for newscast, podcast, digital, and DEI. CBS News was tops in breaking news coverage, continuing news coverage, excellence in innovation, news series and excellence in writing. NBC News won excellence in video, and CNN took the prize for investigative reporting.
Nicole Suárez and Octavio Pulido will co-anchor Telemundo’s “Noticias Telemundo Mediodía” starting August 21. “The midday newscast will feature a new dynamic two-anchor format with powerful storytelling and insightful reports, building on our commitment to provide viewers with the most complete, reliable and up-to-date information,” said Noticias Telemundo EVP Patsy Loris.
Put down the paintbrush. The third season of HBO’s “Painting with John,” starring John Lurie, will be its last. “I am sad about it, but it is a miracle that it ever happened at all,” posted Lurie on X.
STRIKE UPDATES
There was some positive movement in Tuesday’s meeting between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, but the two sides are still nowhere close to an agreement. Streaming residuals remain an issue, along with health insurance coverage, the WGA’s desire to allow its members to honor other unions’ picket lines, and a higher minimum tier for TV writer-producer packages. Tuesday was the first day of talks since the strike began on May 2.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
A&E has greenlit “The Chicano Squad” (w/t), a docuseries chronicling a groundbreaking team of bilingual patrol officers suddenly promoted to Detectives to form the first all-Latin homicide unit in 1979. The project is produced by Jupiter Entertainment and Bender Brown Productions for A&E.
A new Netflix series will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the world of elite sprinters. Box to Box Films (“Drive to Survive”) is producing the show, set to shoot at the World Championships in Budapest from August 19-27.

BIG TV Q&A
Next month, Cynopsis hosts the Big TV Conference, an opportunity to hear from media industry thought leaders about the business’ most pressing issues. On hand will be Albert Thompson, Managing Director, Digital Innovation, at Walton Isaacson – a bold thinker and straight talker helping to untangle technology and chart a path to the future. Here, he answers some questions ahead of the September 27-28 event.
How concerned are you about AI?
Once the machines are properly programmed, the Artificial General Intelligence will have the ability to outclass professionals in terms of intelligence and reaction speed in certain domains. The greatest threat will be two-fold: 1) What they call Narrow Ai – that has a very focused utilization to solve specific points of friction; and 2) the inherent danger in outsourcing “agency” or decisioning via Ai tools
What’s the greatest threat AI poses to the Linear/CTV business?
Ai has the ability to identify clear intent signals in consumer preferences. It will be the “intellectual equalizer” in the Supply Path conversation and will surpass much of what your sales team has historically been telling the clients.
What is the biggest mistake you see media companies making right now?
Every major media channel has “omni-channel” possibilities whether the focus is Retail Media, Paid Social, DOOH, Video, or Gaming. There needs to be re-education for brands on how to maximize the entire universe based on how their consumer executes “decisioning” around purchasing. Stop behaving as if it’s the B2B business. It’s the B2B2C business. C is for the consumer.
If you could give one piece of advice to networks regarding ad sales, what would it be?
The consumer journey isn’t linear (literally). They move across the entire video ecosystem from OLV to TikTok to streaming platforms to cable networks to Reels and back. Therefore, your planning approach needs to mirror the only one who’s guaranteed to win – the consumer; instead of selling it based on your organization silos or investment silos of Agency Holdcos.

“Heart of Invictus,” a docuseries from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, premieres Wednesday, August 30 on Netflix. “‘Heart of Invictus’ is the incredible story of competitors brought together through service, who are now united through sport,” said the Duke of Sussex. “While in various stages of recovery from both visible and invisible injuries, these competitors and their loved ones give a compelling look at their journey to the Invictus Games, in a way that commands admiration and respect.”
Ryan Kaji and his family, along with Sunlight Entertainment, their production company, announced that “Ryan’s World Ninja Adventures” will debut on the Ryan’s World YouTube Channel on Saturday, August 19 at 8a.

SPORTS ROUNDUP
NFL Sunday Ticket’s move to YouTube in September will mean new You Tube-y features like live chats and polls, with real-time highlights available in the Shorts player. There will also be new payment options, and a plan for students.
