Google is taking action to protect young users. In addition to blocking ad targeting based on the age, gender or interests of people under 18, Google is turning off its data-tracking “location history” option for users under the age of 18 and adding filters promoting safe searching for all minors. YouTube plans to change the default upload setting to private for 13-to-17-year-olds, making videos viewable only by the user and people they authorize.

New legislation introduced in the Senate would give developers the right to tell their customers about lower prices outside of app stores and permit alternative payment mechanisms. The Open Market Act would also prevent big players like Apple from using non-public information they collect via app stores to build out competing products.

Apple released a new tool for developers to allow them to test their app behavior when a device is connected to 5G instead of Wi-Fi. The tool comes in the wake of a new iOS feature that prioritizes 5G over W-Fi in 5G-enabled devices when Wi-Fi connection performance is slow or unsafe.

At its Unpacked event last week, Samsung introduced new foldable models, including the Galaxy Z Fold 3 (including an under-display camera) and Galaxy Z Flip 3, as well as a new smartwatch. Also offered up: $150 wireless earbuds that include active noise cancellation.

Facebook has added a new feature that allows users to create a prayer post in Facebook Groups. Other users can share a comment, click an “I prayed” button or send a private message.

YouTube and Google TV have incorporated Parrot Analytics’ global audience demand data and entertainment consulting services to help inform content programming decisions. “By sharing our expertise, data and consulting services in global audience demand, YouTube and Google TV will continue to evolve their content strategy based on the latest trends,” said Parrot Analytics CEO Wared Seger.

Video technology company Connatix announced an extended technology agreement with The Associated Press, which uses Connatix’s video monetization platform, Playspace, to fuel its content monetization strategy. With Connatix’s Playspace platform, the AP is able to recirculate and monetize its existing articles using editor-friendly swipeable story units.

IAB Tech Lab has launched its Tech Lab Transparency Center, a resource aimed at making it easier for digital advertising participants to see which standards media partners have implemented, their level of compliance, certification program results, and more. “The Transparency Center has been designed and built to provide a single source of truth that ensures a safe and reliable transaction between buyer and seller. This is the first iteration and it will continue to evolve and grow over time, and add more programs and resources to serve the entire advertising ecosystem,” said Anthony Katsur, CEO, IAB Tech Lab. “Ultimately we aim to have buyers and sellers leverage the Transparency Center to ensure that they are working with responsible partners that utilize standards to combat fraud and enable privacy-compliant ad targeting in a cookie-less ecosystem.”

STREAMING

Comscore struck a deal to include YouTube and YouTube TV measurement into its cross-platform service, Comscore Campaign Ratings, helping advertisers and agencies better understand combined co-viewing for YouTube and YouTube TV across OTT/CTV as well as incremental reach to their linear TV buys. “We want to ensure advertisers can measure their reach across all devices with third-party partners like Comscore,” said Debbie Weinstein, VP of Global Solutions at YouTube.

NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises has created a new Hispanic Streaming business division exclusively dedicated to charge the growth of Latinos on Peacock and across Telemundo and NBCUniversal streaming platforms. The content slate will include 50+ projects at launch. Romina Rosado has been named EVP and General Manager, Hispanic Streaming, to lead the new division.

ACQUISITIONS

Video software provider Synamedia has acquired ContentArmor, developer of forensic watermarking solutions for the media and entertainment industry. In addition to enabling Synamedia to meet video service providers’ edge and 5G security demands, the deal boosts Synamedia’s anti-piracy capabilities for movie studios and sports rightsholders across OTT and direct-to-consumer services.

Influencer marketing, branding, and social media platform Takumi announced their acquisition of content and strategic media-buying agency Unieed. The acquisition of Unieed will build out the paid media team in Takumi’s London and New York offices, including the addition of Joe Adsett, Founder and Managing Director of Unieed, as Paid Media Director.
