Newsy started life as a digital-first news brand, and has grown into a national news network. CEO Blake Sabatinelli, who will be speaking on the “Winning OTT Strategies” at the Cynopsis Big TV Conference, talks about what works, and what’s ahead, in the fast-evolving OTT space.
What prompted Newsy’s move from syndicator of short-form video to major news channel? Newsy has always been focused on video production, so the choice to take our product to TV was an easy one to make. Once we started to grow our audience on OTT, we realized a market opportunity was opening for an unbiased news offering on traditional cable as the incumbent networks continued to shift toward more opinion-focused programming. We made the jump and it’s been paying off ever since.
Newsy straddles the digital and cable worlds. What is the biggest difference between the two ecosystems? As the line between OTT and traditional cable continues to blur, the similarities between the two worlds are becoming greater than the differences. However, there are still two key areas that separate digital from cable today: the ability to have a direct relationship with the consumer and true addressable advertising. Cable is quickly catching up on the latter thanks to initiatives from Project OAR, among others, but the ability to own the relationship with your viewer is a huge – and incredibly valuable – difference.
How do you predict the soon-to-come proliferation of streaming services will play out? Consolidation of SVOD services will be inevitable. According to Parks Associates, household spending on OTT video services hasn’t increased in three years. That means winners and losers will be chosen quickly, and that decision will be based on what content the consumer deems the most worthy of their hard-earned money.
