IN THE NEWS

“Shouldn’t we use a more reliable platform that can actually raise money for charity?” That’s what Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg said, following Elon Musk’s announcement that their proposed cage fight would be livestreamed on X, with proceeds going to veterans. Who to bet on? Musk had posted a video of himself lifting weights at work and noted, “If the fight is short, I probably win. If long, he may win on endurance.”

HBO’s “Succession” was the big TCA Awards winner, named Program of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Drama. FX’s “The Bear” was no slouch, honored as Outstanding New Program and Outstanding Achievement in Comedy. “This was a landmark year for television, as we said goodbye to several powerhouse series while welcoming a new generation of shows and stars into this highly competitive landscape,” said outgoing TCO President Melanie McFarland in a digital presentation that replaced a live ceremony due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes. “Whether established hits or first-year favorites, our honorees exemplify the strength of television and the unique depth that it allows creators to explore. Though we are unable to gather in 2023, we sincerely congratulate each of this season’s winners, and we hope to celebrate in person in 2024.”

Outdoor Sportsman Group multi-platform initiative Ultimate Season ’23 will showcase new products and tips from experts, through October. “We’re creating an immersive cross-platform experience for both the audience and our advertisers,” said OSG EVP Advertising Sales Jason. “It’s not just about reading an article or watching a show anymore – it’s about combining the power of our industry-leading brands and talent to engage our audience in new and exciting ways.”

STRIKE UPDATES

The Writers Guild of America and the AMPTP met Friday but failed to come to terms on resuming negotiations. Where does the actors’ union stand? “They’re not speaking to us,” said SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher on “CNN This Morning” on Monday. As for the producers’ group saying, “Our only playbook is getting back to work,” Drescher responded, “You have to be able to negotiate and talk to the opposition to make a deal.”

Season 40 plans for game show “Jeopardy!” have been “derailed” due to the writers’ strike, said executive producer and showrunner Michael Davies on the “Inside Jeopardy!” podcast. Instead of featuring new contestants, the show will invite back players from season 37 who lost their initial game; winners will advance to a season 37 and 38 Champions Wild Card. Questions will include those written before the strike, and recycled material. Davies admits it’s not an optimal solution. “The best episodes are ones that feature our writers’ original material and the very best contestants that we put on the air playing [with] that original material,” he acknowledged.

The IATSE has committed another $2 million in funding for members who have been affected by strikes, for a total of $4 million since June. “The painful effects of these work stoppages on our membership cannot be overstated,” said IATSE President Matthew Loeb. “As difficult as these times are, we have heard time and again that our members understand that this fight had to happen, and their collective support for the actors and writers help ensure they will receive that same support when we return to the bargaining table ourselves.”
