The US is suing TikTok for illegally collecting children’s data. The Justice Department claims TikTok gathered personal information from users under the age of 13 without their parents’ permission, knowingly allowed children under the age of 13 to create and use TikTok accounts, and frequently failed to honor parents’ requests to delete their children’s accounts, violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Act as well as a 2019 agreement between TikTok and the government. The suit is asking that TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, be fined. “With this action, the Department seeks to ensure that TikTok honors its obligation to protect children’s privacy rights and parents’ efforts to protect their children,” stated Benjamin C. Mizer, the acting associate attorney general.

Roku beat Wall Street estimates for 2Q24 revenue and posted smaller-than-expected loss, thanks to strong ad sales and the continued migration of viewers from cable to streaming platforms. “The Roku home screen reaches US households with more than 120 million people every day. This massive reach is highly valued by advertisers,” Roku said in a letter to shareholders. Its platform revenue, the biggest contributor to income, rose 11% to $824.3 million.

A year-over-year decline in iPhone sales didn’t keep Apple from beating Wall Street expectations, with the company setting a third-quarter record of $85.8 billion in revenue. The iPhone business dipped from $39.67 billion to $39.30 this year, but iPad revenue rose 24% to $7.16 billion. Services, including Apple TV+ and Apple Music, was up 14%. During the company’s earnings call, CEO Tim Cook touted Apple Intelligence, the suite of generative AI features coming in iOS 18.1 this fall.

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway sold about half of its Apple stock, according to Berkshire’s second quarter earnings report. That still left the company with holdings in Apple valued at $84.2 billion, its largest stock stake.

Amazon reported weaker than expected revenue for the quarter, $147.98 billion versus $148.56 billion, largely due to issues with its retail business. In cloud, AWS grew 19% year-over-year, beating estimates, and ad revenue rose 20% to $12.77 billion.

Reddit has acquired ad creative optimization platform Memorable AI, which employs AI to analyze human reactions, and create more effective ads. “As we integrate Memorable into our ad stack, our partners will be able to see performance benefits from creative insights from previous ads, better creative effectiveness, and automation that guides their creative towards maximum performance and return on ad spend,” said Reddit on its website.

Roku announced its adoption of identity solution Unified ID 2.0 across its streaming inventory, empowering advertisers to deliver more personalized ad experiences across Roku’s inventory and devices at scale. UID2 integration enables Roku Media to become interoperable across the programmatic ecosystem.

An increasing number of TV viewers are accepting advertising in streaming video, according to Hub Entertainment Research’s latest “TV Advertising: Fact vs. Fiction” survey. Key findings include:
· 66% of TV viewers would prefer watching ads if it saves on subscription costs, up from 58% three years ago.
· The number of consumers saying they can’t tolerate ads has declined from 17% three years ago to 12% in June 2024.
· Nearly eight in ten viewers agree there are “big differences” in the amount of advertising presented on competing TV services, with 53% of those surveyed saying AVODs provide a little or a lot better ad experiences than FAST (39%) and VMVPD (42%) subscribers.
· The proportion of consumers saying they watch an ad-free SVOD has dropped since December from 84% to 58%, coinciding with the launch of advertising as the default on Amazon Prime Video.

“Over the past few years, the video ecosystem has seen fundamental change, with nearly all of the formerly ad-free streamers adding a lower cost ad-supported tier,” said Mark Loughney, Hub Senior Consultant. “Consumers have responded not by rejecting advertising or canceling subscriptions, but embracing the opportunity to save on their monthly subscriptions. By putting forth an overt offer of lower fees in exchange for watching a reasonable number of ads, the streaming services have given consumers a better value proposition. As a result, the future of the streaming advertising marketplace looks very bright.”

Harmony Frequency provides DSPs with frequency intelligence across a brand’s entire media portfolio before they bid. The strategic combination will create an end-to-end, omnichannel advertising solution for the open internet, combining Outbrain’s AI-driven performance technology with Teads’ video and branding solutions for a comprehensive full-funnel solution for advertisers. “This strategic combination presents vast new opportunities for the advertising industry at large,” said Bertrand Quesada, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Teads.

The top-performing US brands on TikTok were shared in a new joint report with CreatorIQ leveraging CreatorIQ’s Earned Media Value (EMV) metric to measure and identify the brands generating the most conversation on the platform. Leading the pack were Amazon (1.03B EMV), NBA (894.63M EMV), NFL (688.19M EMV), Sephora (468.83M EMV), Fortnite (360.15M EMV), Barbie (337.19M EMV), Target (330.19M EMV), Bloom Nutrition (288.17M EMV), Walmart (279.41M EMV) and Apple (210.11M EMV). The report also includes data from TikTok highlighting the strategies and insights that drove brand success on the platform, including:
· Engagement Drives EMV: The top brands don’t just focus on follower count—they develop long-term partnerships with authentic creators who have a track record of engaging the right audiences.
· Higher Post Volume Increases Value: The more consistent a creator is with posting about a brand, the more authentic the relationship is perceived by audiences.
· While Beauty captures nearly a third of the TikTok Top 100, other industries like sports, retail, media, food & beverage, and gaming are increasing their presence among heavy-hitters.

iSpot announced an integration with TikTok to help brands gain a view into the audience reach that the short-form video platform delivers compared to linear TV viewers. The solution is now widely available to marketers via iSpot’s Unified Measurement Platform, which verifies and measures TV advertising across streaming platforms, apps, services, and traditional linear networks. Advertisers will have the ability to:

STREAMING

Live-streaming has surpassed prior peak viewership during the Covid pandemic, fueled over the past six months by a wider variety of platforms, including Kick for non-gaming content, Rumble for political and news streams, and Chzzk for South Korean channels, according to Stream Hatchet’s 2024 second quarter Live-Streaming Trends Report. Key takeaways from the report include:
· Live-streaming viewership is up 10% from Q2 2023 to 8.5 billion hours watched.
· Twitch’s dominance of the live streaming market seems to be declining – in Q2 2023, it held 70% of the market share of hours watched. In Q2 2024, that share has dropped to 60%.
· The top creators are losing their stranglehold on the market, with the top 5% of streamers by hours watched dropping from 98% of the total market share in Q2 2019 to 86% in Q2 2024.
· Within the gaming market, Grand Theft Auto V and League of Legends remain the top live-streamed games during the 2024 second quarter with 510 million hours, and 439 million hours watched across all platforms, respectively.

Cineverse Corp. will distribute video content for the first time on Spotify, including programming from both its channel partners and additional titles curated from the company’s library of more than 70,000 films and television shows. Titles from Cineverse’s portfolio of FAST channels now available via video on Spotify include “Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan,” “Land of the Lost,” “Entrepreneur Elevator Pitch,” “The FBI Files,” comedy specials, and more.
