IN THE NEWS

Sinclair Broadcast Group posted a record second quarter, with 2Q22 media revenues of $366 million, up 11% from a year ago. “Political revenues were not only very strong, but they were the highest second quarter and year-to-date political revenue in our company’s history,” said Sinclair President/CEO Chris Ripley. “We expect political revenue to drive total ad sales for the remainder of the year, resulting in growth over last year. It is important to note that while we’re not in a position to forecast the state of the economy through the end of the year or in 2023, we expect that a strong year of political advertising helps cushion against any possible downturn.”

TV ad impressions were up 7.29% YoY in the first half of 2022, according to iSpot.tv’s “2022 TV Advertising Snapshot.” Additional findings include:
· Spanish-language TV ad impressions are 11% YoY, as Spanish-language networks and shows also grow their share of impressions
· Live sports accounted for 25.5% of TV ad impressions – up from 22.4% in the first half of 2021, thanks to the Winter Olympics, NFL Playoffs and full NBA Playoffs
· The LiMu Emu and “Doug” were the most-seen individual spokespeople in H1 2022, but they were still outpaced by kids, dogs, cats and babies by share of TV ad impressions
Which were the hottest industries in first half of the year? Travel (TV ad impressions up 93% YoY), sports betting (up 81%) and theatrical releases (up 64%).

Fox Corporation inked a multi-year renewal of its distribution agreement with Verizon for Fios TV that includes Fox Weather and Tubi. The agreement also includes the continued distribution of Fox brands including Fox News Media, Fox Sports, Fox Network and local Fox O&O TV stations.

Netflix has canceled teen vampire drama “First Kill” after one season. The series was released June 10, peaking its first week with 48.8 million hours viewed.

SAG-AFTRA and Netflix have reached a tentative deal for a new contract, subject to approval by the guild’s National Board. Negotiations were extended past the original June 30 deadline.

“We are saddened and shocked by the news,” said “Batgirl” producers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah after news broke that Warner Bros. has canceled plans for their high-profile film, originally slated for release on HBO Max and already in post-production. “The decision to not release ‘Batgirl’ reflects our leadership’s strategic shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max,” said a company spokesperson. The studio also scratched plans for “Scoob!: Holiday Haunt.” Warner Bros. Discovery is looking to cut $3 billion in costs in the wake of the company’s April merger.

Season three of animated series “Little Ellen,” originally scheduled to premiere in June, has also been scrapped by HBO Max, reports Deadline. The series is loosely based on a seven-year-old Ellen DeGeneres.

TECH TALK

Sinclair Broadcast Group has signed a multi-year agreement with Comscore to deploy Comscore Consumer Intelligence across its sales organization. “Comscore has supplemented its local television currency with a consumer-focused, rather than demographic focused offering that provides in-market consumer shopping behavior. This allows television to more effectively compete with digital giants that have siphoned media dollars from television,” said Carol Hinnant, Chief Revenue Officer, Comscore. “We are excited to be partnered with Consumer Orbit to bring this innovated offering to market.”

Customer experience intelligence platform DISQO announced the launch of Outcomes Lift, a product measuring the full incremental impact of cross-platform advertising campaigns on marketing funnel outcomes. “Outcomes Lift illuminates the pervasive blind spots that existed even before the deprecation of cookies and other outdated identifiers,” said Stephen Jepson, EVP, Advertising Effectiveness, DISQO. “Our Brand and Outcomes Lift products are setting the bar in ad measurement because, rather than stitching together workarounds from incomplete data sources, we’ve invited people to share their experiences passively and directly through our platform.”
