08/02/19: MLS Commissioner Don Garber updated media on expansion plans

Good morning. It’s Friday August 2, 2019 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

With the MLS All-Star Game in the books, Major League Soccer updated fans on its expansion plans, with MLS Commissioner Don Garber revealing that the league is in “advanced talks” with both St. Louis and Sacramento, considered by most to be the favorites to be awarded teams 28 and 29, with both teams hopeful to begin play in 2022. Meanwhile Charlotte’s bid, led by Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper, is making headway according to NBC Sports. “We are in advanced talks with both of them. They are not exclusive talks. Exclusive means we’re not talking to anybody else,” Garber said. “It doesn’t mean anybody’s leapfrogging anybody else. We are in discussions with Charlotte, but we are also in discussions with Sacramento and St. Louis.”
Reports also state that bid teams from Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Phoenix Rising FC, San Diego and Raleigh were all also in Orlando for meetings with MLS around the ASG.
 
 
PROGRAMMING

ESPN+ is reportedly set to land rights to Germany’s Bundesliga, according to the New York Post, which reports that the package would be exclusively on Plus starting with the 2020-2021 season. More on this when/if it is formally announced.
 
CBS Sports Network unveiled announcer and studio teams for the 2019 college football season, with the channel kicking off this year’s slate on Aug. 24 with Villanova/Colgate at noon. Carter Blackburn and Aaron Taylor return as CBS Sports Network’s lead college football play-by-play and analyst team for their sixth consecutive season, with Jenny Dell back as lead sideline reporter. Other teams will include: Rich Waltz/Aaron Murray/John Schriffen; Dave Ryan/Corey Chavous; John Sadak/Randy Cross/Sheehan Stanwick-Burch (Navy); and Ben Holden/Ross Tucker/Tina Cervasio (Army). Studio show Inside College Football returns Aug. 27 at 7p with coverage anchored by host Adam Zucker, with analysts Rick Neuheisel, Brian Jones, Randy Cross and Taylor. CBS Sports Network’s studio team also includes host Brent Stover with returning analysts Houston Nutt, Danny Kanell and Kevin Carter.
 
NBC Sports Regional Networks are set to present a live video simulcast of The Daily Line, NBC Sports Radio’s weekday afternoon drive show focused on sports betting and other leading sports topics, on television in several of its markets and via streaming nationwide, beginning Aug. 5. Sara Perlman will now join Michael Jenkins and Tim Murray to serve as a co-host as the company continues its expansion into covering sports wagering.
 
TUDN and UniMas report that the MLS All-Star Game on Wednesday averaged 626,000 Total Viewers and 364,000 Adults 18-49 to rank as the third most-watched MLS All-Star match on Univision networks ever. The contest saw an increase of 26% among Total Viewers and 19% among A18-49 versus 2018 match.
 
ESPN announced that 400 live events, with more than 800 hours of live programming, will be available this fall on ACC Network’s digital arm, ACC Network Extra. The new, 24/7 national platform launches on Aug. 22 and will showcase 168 volleyball games, 108 women’s soccer games, 91 men’s soccer games, 42 field hockey games, five football games and the 2019 ACC Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships.
 
TUDN celebrates the U.S. Women’s National Team’s World Cup title by delivering live coverage of the team’s Victory Tour kickoff match on Saturday against the Republic of Ireland on Galavision at 10p. TUDN sportscasters Paco Villa, Ramses Sandoval and Tony Cherchi will provide coverage.

FOX Sports announced that WBC Heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilder will join Lennox Lewis and blow-by-blow announcer Kenny Albert to call FOX PBC Fight Night: Adam Kownacki vs. Chris Arreola on Saturday at 8p on FOX. Leading up to the fights, David Benavidez joins Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini and host Chris Myers live in FOX Sports’ Los Angeles studios.
 
Meanwhile, Combate Americas announced its first world lightweight championship bout in history – pitting Rafa “Gifted” Garcia and Erick “Ghost Pepper” Gonzalez on Sept. 20, live on television in the U.S. on both Univision (12a) and TUDN (12a) from Auditorio del Estado.

The partners unveiled the brand-new youth academy support program, Audi Goals Drive Progress, to help provide funding for MLS academies. Audi vowed to commit $5,000 for every goal scored during the All-Star game, $500 for every goal scored in the regular season, $2,000 for every goal during the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs and $10,000 for every goal scored during MLS Cup for up to a $1 million total commitment of funds in 2019.

Panini America signed Finnish hockey star Kaapo Kakko to an exclusive autograph trading card agreement. WAVE and MyCujoo announced a content and advertising partnership that will boost the volume of soccer coverage in WAVE’s publishing network, while expanding MyCujoo’s reach in the US, following several recent content acquisitions in the market. “MyCujoo has exclusive, worldwide digital rights to more soccer than anyone on the planet and are providing digital streaming access to the game at a level no one else in media can compete with,” said Brian Verne, CEO and cofounder of WAVE. “This deal allows us to bring that content to our soccer-hungry fans, at a time when the sport is growing faster than ever in the US. ESPORTS

Monster news as the streaming wars continue to heat up. Gaming pillar Tyler “Ninja” Blevins announced that he is moving to Microsoft’s streaming service, Mixer, to stream games and video exclusively on the platform at www.mixer.com/Ninja while shifting his content off of Twitch. Ninja will kick off his first Mixer stream during Lollapalooza 2019, running Aug. 2-4. at Ninja’s Dojo inside the Red Bull Outpost. Ninja teaming up with Mixer was supported by Loaded, Ninja’s management company responsible for overseeing key areas of his career, including sponsorships, media licensing, merchandising, book publishing, partnerships, appearances and more, in close collaboration with Ninja’s legal counsel at Loeb & Loeb. Ninja will also attend broader gaming events and activations throughout the year in support of Mixer.
