The former hosts of BBC’s Top Gear will get back behind the wheel for Amazon Prime. Richard Hammond, James May and controversial former host Jeremy Clarkson join Top Gear showrunner Andy Willman for a car-themed series expected to hit the service in 2016. “@AmazonVideoUK now saying I can’t be their chief drone pilot,” tweeted Clarkson. “Apparently they want us to make a car show.”
Director Cary Fukunaga drama Beasts of No Nation will hit theatres and Netflix on Oct. 16. The film opens in Landmark Theatres as part of the new distribution deal Netflix announced yesterday with Landmark and Andrew Karpen’s Bleeker Street. Drama starring Idris Elba follows a guerilla army commander in a West African country who takes a young boy under his wing.
The new Apple TV will make its debut in September, and include the new SVOD that lets users purchase TV content sans cable subscription. Updates include a slimmed-down device and voice commands.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS
The casting special for season 14 of Project Runway is now streaming on Lifetime and Yahoo TV, ahead of its linear debut. Hour-long Road to the runway introduces the season’s designers, complete with tours of homes and closets. The special’s linear premiere is Aug. 6 at 8p ET, before Project Runway returns at 9p ET.
NBC Universo picked up Mitu’s Vive el Verano, featuring Hispanic influencers, made up of 36 short video clips distributed on multiple platforms. Summer-themed programming airs Aug. 1 through early September; viewers will have access to additional content online.
Moves Media Ventures is converting digital media brand Moves magazine to OTT platform Moves.tv. “We have an opportunity to use the power of video and our celebrity connections to engage and influence consumers on a global scale with branded content, exclusive editorial and VIP events,” said Jay Levy, CEO and Publisher. Two new execs are onboard for the transition: Adam Dubov joins as Senior Vice President, Network Programming, and Dimitri Falk is Partner and Chief Creative Officer. The switch to OTT is expected to take six months.
Satellite TV services provider Videocon d2h Limited is launching a mobile TV app called Direct to Mobile TV that will allow subscribers to watch TV on smartphones at any time. Available for Android and iOS devices, the app will include more than 70 select live TV channels and over 3000 movies and videos, along with a program guide, show reminders and social media integration.

CONTENT MEDIA
PBS named two winners of its fourth annual online film festival yesterday. Taking the People’s Choice top honor: Sinner Victim Saint, a short narrative presented by CET/Think TV. Animated film 11 Paper Place, presented by member station Vermont PBS, was the most viewed of the 25 short films screen online. During the six weeks the films were available for screening, entries were streamed more than 400,000 times, up from 312,000 streams in 2014.
Fandango Movieclips launched a “country edition” of its I Love Movies original video series. Filmed at the CMA Music Festival in Nashville earlier this summer, the four new episodes feature country music stars Brad Paisley, Scotty McCreery, Maddie + Tae and Old Dominion. Vids are available on YouTube and Fandango.com.

Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric spoke to YouTube celeb Shane Dawson at VidCon last week about the decision to announce his bisexuality to his nearly seven million subscribers. In the interview, Couric notes how many intimate details are being shared on YouTube, like My Drunk Kitchen host Hannah Hart and Joey Graceffa’s coming out the platform. GroupM and Sony’s streaming network Crackle sealed an advertising agreement guaranteeing viewability metrics for the agency’s clients. “We must get what we pay for – working with Crackle gives us the ability to allocate our investments accordingly and more importantly, ensures that our interests are aligned,” said Dan Bracken, Director of Marketing Services, Church + Dwight, a GroupM client. Earlier this year, Crackle partnered with Moat for a system to track viewable ad measurement across Connected TV.
AD PLATFORMS
With AT+T’s acquisition of DirecTV set, the satellite TV company’s ad sales fall under the AT+T AdWorks umbrella. Through the merger, AT+T’s AdWorks’ TV Blueprint solution will merge with DirecTV’s addressable TV product to create AddressablePlus. “The combination of 12 million addressable DIRECTV homes with the 70 million homes in the TV Blueprint audience network puts us in a unique position,” said AT+T’s new President Rick Welday. “We will continue to reduce wasted spend in traditional national TV ad buys and provide best-in-class post campaign measurement to prove it.”
VC FUNDING + INVESTORS
User-generated entertainment network Jukin Media raised $2 million in funding from Samsung Venture investment Corporation, on top of $2.2 million raised in 2014 from BDMI, Maker Studios, Karlin Ventures, Peter Guber, Allen DeBevoise, Richard Wolpert, Brad Zions, Canyon Creek Capital, Kombo Ventures and Launchpad LA. The new funds will be used to invest in tech and original production.
Interactive video company Fuisz Media landed a $10 million Series A funding round, led by Evolution Media Partners, a joint venture between Evolution Media Capital, TPG Growth and Participant Media. Ross Levinsohn, former Yahoo interim CEO and Fox Interactive Media President, and Principal at Evolution Media Capital, Ian Doody, joined the company’s Board of Directors.
NBCUniversal is in talks with BuzzFeed to invest $250 million in the millennial-focused publisher, according to Re/Code. In addition, the Comcast-owned company will invest in Vox Media (owner of Re/Code) to bring its value to $850 million. The deals are part of an effort to connect with millennial audiences.
RESEARCH
How much is digital pulling from traditional media’s ad revenue? According to Standard Media Index, digital’s revenue filches from a combination of media types, and also boasts $1 billion organic growth. The study analyzed October 2014-June 2015 and found digital ad spending was up $3 billion year-over-year, while broadcast and cable total spend decreased by $1.1 billion; local TV, print and radio was down $900 million.
