Viacom’s VH1 Classic will rebrand to MTV Classic on Monday, August 1, with “an eclectic mix of fan-favorite MTV series” from the ’90s and early 2000s. “MTV’s programming vault is a music and pop culture goldmine with universal resonance,” said Sean Atkins, net president. On August 1 at 6a, 35 years to the day after MTV’s launch, MTV Classic will air MTV’s first hour of programming from 1981, followed by a Total Request Live retrospective in the afternoon. Monday-Thursday programming blocks include series like Daria, Beavis & Butt-head and Jackass from 10p-1a; Friday prime time will feature classic music series including MTV Unplugged and Storytellers.
Sounds divine: Bette Midler, along with Charlie Puth, Sammy Hagar and Joan Jett, has signed as mentor for season 11 of NBC’s The Voice. The singing competition returns Monday, September 19, after a special preview episode Sunday, August 21 at 10:30p following the closing ceremony of the Summer Olympics.
HBO is putting a stop to Project Greenlight. “When we picked up a new season in 2014, we imagined a one season revival and decided in early 2016 another season did not make sense for us,” said HBO. The movie-making reality series from Matt Damon and Ben Affleck premiered in 2002 on HBO, moved to Bravo, then was revived by the premium cabler. And it may rise again. “We have to take it out again,” possibly to a streaming service, Damon told the Associated Press.
Net earnings at CBS rose 27 percent to $423 million in 2Q16, versus $332 a year ago. “CBS turned in another terrific quarter,” said CEO Les Moonves. “Our base business is very healthy, including our strongest upfront selling season in years.” Retransmission consent and reverse compensation grew 44 percent, reported Moonves, and CBS’s OTT services, CBS All Access and Showtime OTT, “continue to exceed expectations.” Moonves added he expects the ad sales news should get even rosier in late September, when new higher pricing takes effect.
A Massachusetts judge agreed to take the case of Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman and Viacom director George Abrams, ousted from the board of Sumner Redstone’s National Amusements, which controls the votes at Viacom as well as CBS. Dauman and Abrams claim Redstone wasn’t mentally competent to make the decision on May 20 to boot them off the board. But while the Judge George Phelan allowed Dauman and Abrams access to Redstone’s medical records, he denied their request for a mental and physical examination of the 93-year-old.
Three long-time residents of Sesame Street are moving out. Bob McGrath (music teacher Bob since the show’s 1969 launch on PBS), Emilio Delgado (handyman Luis since 1971) and Roscoe Orman (schoolteacher Gordon since 1974) are off the show, but will “continue to represent us at public events,” said producer Sesame Workshop. Don’t blame HBO, home to the venerable series since January, for the exits. “Since the show began, we are constantly evolving our content and curriculum, and hence, our characters, to meet the educational needs of children,” said Sesame Workshop. “As we’ve stated previously, Sesame Workshop retains sole creative control over the show. HBO does not oversee the production.” Responding to outcry over the news, PBS president and CEO Paula Kerger said, “We did not know about it beforehand.” Episodes are now a half hour, versus one hour, made available free to PBS after a nine-month window.
Back to school: PBS is devoting a week of primetime programming to the challenges facing students today. From September 12-17, “Spotlight Education” will air on local PBS stations nationwide (check local listings), and include 11 films and documentaries on Frontline, POV, NOVA, Ted Talks and special reports from PBS Newshour, among other content. The week kicks off a year-long teacher support campaign, “Teach Boldly,” that will include a series of virtual and community training events.
Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) will narrate Nat Geo WILD’s global mini-series event Savage Kingdom, focusing on warring animal clans. Each episode of the series, premiering Friday, November 25 at 9p, will be told from one predator’s point of view. “When we developed the series, we immediately saw the parallels between the battle for power in George R. R. Martin’s fictional world and the vicious fight for survival in the animal kingdom” said Geoff Daniels, EVP and GM of Nat Geo WILD. “We knew that Charles Dance could tell this story the way it needs to be told.”

For television categories, entry forms are available online October 3; deadline for submitting TV and commercial entries is December 2; online voting takes place December 12-January 9; and nominations will be announced January 11, 2017.
