Good morning. It’s Friday July 29, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Mindshare North America released new research surrounding the 2016 Summer Olympics. The company leveraged The Pool, a proprietary research tool, to examine media habits, consumer insights, and brand opportunities leading into the global event. Of the 1,034 people surveyed by Mindshare NA’s Insights team, 75% say that they plan to watch the upcoming Olympics with 88% of Olympics viewers planning to watch on TV. Still, 23% of viewers say that they will watch the events live on PC/desktop. On the VR front, 43% of Olympics viewers say that they would watch the Olympics on a virtual reality headset if they owned one. Meanwhile, 51% of viewers watch the Olympics to see a specific sportcompared to only 29% watching it because of “patriotic duty to cheer for their country.”

Mindshare NA’s research also researched the opportunities for brands to provide content around the Olympics. More than half (56%) of viewers between the ages of 18-34 say that they would like to see brands provide behind-the-scenes content on athletes and team during the Olympics. In addition, 45% of viewers ages 18-34 would like to see brands offer access to tips and advice from Olympic athletes on their sport.

ON THE AIR

Brett Favre has been drafted by SiriusXM NFL Radio, marking the first regular sports media role for the three-time NFL MVP since he retired after the 2010 season. Favre will host a series of hour-long broadcasts during this season starting Aug. 5 at 6p with a special “Town Hall” style show from Canton. Favre will then host the show live on a regular basis starting in September, joining co-host Bruce Murray to discuss headline news happening around the NFL, analyze the league’s teams and players, and share his experiences from his career and his life since retiring.

Unfortunately, Craig Sager will no longer be able to cover the Olympics for NBC Sports. The company announced that Sager returned to MD Anderson to continue his fight against leukemia and is now preparing for a third bone marrow transplant which will prevent him from covering the Games. “We wish him the best in his continued recovery,” the company said in its statement.

The NBA and AEG locked in its matchup for NBA Global Games London 2017, pitting the Nuggets/Pacers for the contest, which will be a regular-season game at The O2 on Jan. 12. Tickets for the game will go on sale at the beginning of the 2016-17 NBA season. The event will also offer interactive fan activities for fans as well as NBA Cares community outreach initiatives and Jr. NBA basketball programs.

ESPN2’s First Take booked a ticket for a NFL Training Camp Tour next week, lining up visits starting Tuesday with the New York Jets, Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington Redskins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Host Molly Qerim and commentators Stephen A. Smith and Max Kellerman will be at the desk, joined by ESPN’s Ryan Clark, beginning Aug. 2 at Florham Park with the Jets.

Golf Channel celebrates the return of golf to the Olympics with Countdown to Rio on Sunday at 9p. The program dates back to when the IOC officially voted golf back in as an Olympic sport in October 2009, and follows the events that unfolded in the subsequent years.

Time Warner Cable SportsNet locked in a deal with ESPN Radio Los Angeles 710AM for a multi-year programming agreement to simulcast the Thompson & Trudell show and Mason & Ireland show starting Aug. 3. The five-hour programming block will air on TWC SportsNet and ESPNLA 710 Radio Monday-Friday between 10a-3p.

Elsewhere on the local front, SNY is picking up Ralph Vacchiano as its NFL Insider. Vacchiano will depart the NY Daily News and cover the Giants and Jets beats for SNY.tv and as a regular contributor to “Daily News Live” and “GEICO SportsNite.”

El Rey Network announced that Lucha Underground will return for an all-new 40 episode, third season oN Sept. 7 at 8p. “Lucha Underground” is produced by MGM in association with FactoryMade Ventures for El Rey Network.

ESPN Radio reports that Spring 2016 generated a 27% uptick in impressions from the same time last year, according to Nielsen Audio in PPM markets. The company grew its female audience by 42% over last year. ESPN Radio has added 625,000 new listeners in the last quarter.

NBC Olympics is adding Facebook and Instagram to its Olympic team. The collaboration will begin in the lead up to the Opening Ceremony. NBC Olympics and Facebook will team up to create a “Social Command Center” on-site in Rio in a move to capture Facebook Live content, including interviews with NBC Olympics commentators and athletes and offer short-form videos every day on both Facebook and Instagram in the US. In addition, NBC Olympics will produce a two-minute daily recap video for U.S. Facebook users that captures great moments of that day’s competition and post a daily slow-motion video around an inspiring moment for Instagram.

Global event consultancy RGE will boost its presence in Asia Pacific ahead of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics, Rugby World Cup 2019 Japan and the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics and has now locked in a partnership with S2M Group, a China-focused sports marketing agency based in Shanghai. “Outside of the immediate tasks of preparing our clients for the Rio 2016 Olympics, and the upcoming 2017 FIFA Confederations and 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, our major focus has been building our presence to support the Asia Pacific region,” said George Pollington, RGE managing director. RGE launched earlier this year as a subsidiary of rEvolution.

DIGITAL & STREAMING

NFL Sunday Ticket is opening its doors to more college students, announcing NFLSUNDAYTICKET.TV U. The DIRECTV offering will, for the first time, allow students at both 2-year and 4-year colleges to view every live out-of-market NFL game for $24.99 a month for 4 months. The package includes access as well to Red Zone Channel and DIRECTV Fantasy Zone Channel.

ESPORTS

Twitter is up for ELeague, announcing a deal to offer live streaming coverage of this week’s semifinals and championship on Friday and Saturday. The presentation will mark the first eSports event presented live on Twitter and will take place starting Friday at 5p with the first semifinals, followed by the second at 10p. The season one championship will be held Saturday at 4p, with coverage for the weekend also on TBS and Twitch. In addition to live event coverage, the @EL Twitter handle will provide real-time highlights, GIFs, memes, stats and score updates; Periscope content with ELEAGUE on-air talent; and behind-the-scenes footage with players.

Vainglory will hold its Summer Season Championship live events in Seattle at Amazon’s downtown events center adjacent to PAX West, and Cologne, Germany at ESL’s esports arena. In North America, the Championships will be held from Sept. 2-4. Sponsored by The Amazon Appstore, The Vainglory Summer Season runs from June 23 through September 14.

Business intelligence firm ORC International revealed results of its newest CARAVAN Omnibus Survey, looking at the awareness, appeal and concerns over Pokemon GO. Findings saw that 53% of Millennials have downloaded or played the mobile game, while 4 in 10 Millennials consider themselves ‘obsessed’ or ‘dedicated’ to the new interactive app. Overall, 9 in 10 U.S. adults have heard of the game although 7 in 10 adults have concerns over personal safety, versus 61% of Millennials.
