It’s been a long time coming. Verizon announced that it will acquire Yahoo’s core search, media, advertising and communications business for $4.83 million in cash. Verizon will integrate Yahoo with AOL’s operations, which the telco acquired for $4.4 billion last year. The integration with AOL will take place under Marni Walden, Verizon’s EVP and President of Product Innovation and New Businesses. The sale to Verizon doesn’t include Yahoo Japan, Yahoo’s equity investments in Alibaba Group Holdings, or the company’s cash. Those areas of the company will live on after the sale as a publicly-traded investment holding company. (That company will take a different name, of course; Verizon will take possession of the Yahoo brand.) For the moment, Marissa Mayer will stay on as Yahoo’s CEO. The deal is expected to close in Q1 of next year.

 

Twitter’s adventures in live-streaming continue unabated. The company has nabbed the streaming rights to weekly Major League Baseball and National Hockey League games, as well as game highlights. Twitter gained the rights as part of a deal with MLB Advanced Media. (MLBAM manages both MLB.TV’s subscription streaming services and the NHL’s Internet-streaming operations.) In addition, Twitter will begin streaming The Rally, a new nightly show highlighting a number of different sports, including the Olympics and college events. Twitter has now inked content deals with all four major American sports leagues. While the NFL, MLB, and NHL will simulcast live games, the NBA will instead provide Twitter with two original shows.

 

 

AD TECH + PROGRAMMATIC ADVERTISING
 

The video ad marketplace Teads has added 360-degree video to its “inRead” toolkit, which allows advertisers to place video ads in the middle of editorial content. 360-degree video functionality will now be available across all screens, including smartphones and desktop. The 360-degree video spots can be purchased both programmatically and directly.
 
The native advertising platform Connatix announced the launch of Connatix Native Video, a new video platform. The new platform allows publishers to customize video content and manage number and frequency of ads. It also allows publishers to set video content so that it begins playing only when it’s in a user’s view (similar to Facebook video). In order to make inventory readily available, the company says that it has partnered with over 70 programmatic Video DSPS, trading desks and marketers, including SpotX, Tremor, and Videology. Meredith is among the first publishers to use the platform.

PLATFORMS + DEVICES
 

The multi-screen vendor MobiTV has teamed up with the Mississippi-based wireless operator C Spire. The companies are working to build an in-home, Internet-based TV service to compete with traditional pay TV platforms. The service would target connected streaming platforms such as the Apple TV, the Amazon Fire TV, and Roku devices, as well as iOS and Android smartphones and certain smart TVs. According to C Spire, the service will feature a complete television lineup, including broadcast TV stations, VOD, and a cloud DVR. C Spire also says it plans to offer smaller “skinny bundles” of TV channels. C Spire says it aims to launch a beta test of the new service in November.
 

 
PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS
 

The British broadcaster ITV has acquired the exclusive U.K. premiere rights to all of AwesomenessTV’s long-form shows. (Under the new pact, the two companies will also team up to produce youth-oriented original series.) ITV is set to create an extended weekend program for its ITV2 entertainment channel. The program will feature AwesomenessTV content, both scripted and unscripted. For 2017, ITV has acquired 75 total hours of Awesomeness TV content, set to air on both ITV2 and the ITV Hub online platform. In 2018, that number is set to increase to 100 hours.
 
NFL Media announced a new agreement with Sony Interactive Entertainment. The NFL Network and NFL RedZone channels will launch for the PlayStation Vue Internet TV service in time for the start of this coming NFL season. "The NFL is constantly looking to serve our fans premium NFL content where and how they want to see it," said Hans Schroeder, the NFL’s SVP of Media Strategy, Business Development, and Sales.
 
 

  DEALS + COMPANY ACQUISITIONS
 

According to a report from the New York Post, the music video platform Vevo is close to cutting a deal with Warner Music. The deal would officially enable Vevo to distribute music from all three major record labels (Vevo already has deals in place with Sony and Universal, both of which hold stakes in the company). As the Post points out, completing the Warner Deal would likely enable Vevo to focus on launching a paid subscription service. Warner Music and Vevo are said to be in final negotiations.

As bizarre as American public life has been this year, just remember things could always be worse. Chinese authorities has ordered all news companies in the mobile and online sectors to disband their reporting teams. Instead, they may only carry content from state-controlled news media. According to a report from Bloomberg, firms including Tencent, Sohu, Sina, and NetEase received identical letters from Chinese authorities informing them of the decision.
 
 

RESEARCH
 

The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating are the purest form of showing interest digitally, since they’re organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).

EXECUTIVE MOVES
 

Rooster Teeth, the Fullscreen Media-owned digital studio focused on gamers and sci-fi fans, has added a few content execs. Luis Medina, who formerly worked at Disney’s Maker Studios as VP of Partnerships, will hold the same title at Rooster Teeth. Evan Bregman, formerly the original content chief at Portal A, will serve as Rooster Teeth’s Director of Programming. And Ryan P. Hall, formerly a creative executive at Junction Entertainment, will serve as Rooster Teeth’s Head of Development. The new hires come less than a month after the studio announced that it would rebrand its SVOD service under the name First, adding more mainstream content to appeal to a wider audience. It’s safe to say that Medina, Hall, and Bregman will be central to those efforts.
