07.25.16 Good morning. It’s Monday July 25, 2016, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Brand Safety: In online advertising, brand safety refers to practices and tools that are used to make sure that an advertiser’s brand is not damaged due to inappropriate or improper placement of ads. For instance, let’s a say a Jack Daniel’s banner ad was placed directly above an article about the dangers of alcohol abuse; that would be a glaring brand safety failure.
Is this really, finally happening? According to multiple reports, Verizon is nearing a deal to acquire Yahoo for about $5 billion. While multiple companies had expressed interest in acquiring Yahoo’s core business, the telco, which last year acquired AOL for $4.4 billion, was long seen as the favorite. It must be noted that the Verizon/Yahoo acquisition is not quite concluded. The deal is at a late stage, but it could potentially fall through, and it’s still conceivable that other bidders might come back into play, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Video analytics service Visible Measures launched a new predictive video analytics tool. Called the Industry Forecaster, the tool is designed to extrapolate future video viewership trends. Visible Measures says the tool can project 30 to 60 days in the future, using trillions of data points from half a billion videos across hundreds of thousands of online properties (and going back seven years). The data covers brand momentum, historical performance, and the performance of videos from competing brands.

Creative agencies 2C Creative and Flipeleven Creative launched Flip2C, a new marketing initiative. Flip2C is designed to deliver and market tech players, including digital and mobile-first companies and content producers. The initiative will specialize in capabilities such as apps, websites, display ads, and mobile-first products and activations. One of the newest projects to emerge from the initiative is a multi-spot campaign for The Weather Channel app.
The Kickstarter-fueled Mystery Science Theater 3000 reboot, which met its production-related fundraising goals last year, has taken a while to find a home. Now the search is over: MST3K is coming to Netflix. The reboot will debut in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the U.K. in the “not-too-distant future.” Dan Harmon and Joel McHale will also be joining the show as writers, working under head writer Elliot Kalan. The show, created by Joel Hodgson, has a fairly straightforward, if utterly bizarre, premise: A janitor and his two robot sidekicks sit in a movie theater, making fun of cheesy B movies. Shout Factory acquired the distribution rights last year.
ABC News covered the entire Republican National Convention via Facebook Live, with content ranging from live speeches to commentary. The experiment seems to have been a success; ABC News’ Facebook Live coverage garnered about 11.5 million total views, receiving about 20,000 concurrent viewers at its peak. Of course, that’s nothing compared to the convention’s linear TV coverage, which drew over 32 million viewers on its final night alone.
As part of a major new executive restructuring, Time Inc. will divide all of its publications into core groups, each headed by an editorial director. Nancy Gibbs will handle News; Jess Cagle will oversee Celebrity, Entertainment and Style; Chris Stone will continue overseeing Sports; and Nathan Lump will oversee Lifestyle. Meanwhile, Will Lee serves as Digital Director for the Celebrity, Entertainment and Style and Sports groups, reporting to Cagle. (He’ll also stay on as Digital Editorial Director of People and Entertainment Weekly.) Edward Felsenthal will become Digital Director for the News and Lifestyle groups, reporting to Nancy Gibbs. He’ll also stay on as Digital Editor for Time.
Twitter’s media team is seeing some more turnover. Kristine Stewart, who oversaw the company’s North American media partnerships, has left the company. (The departure was first reported by Re/code.) Ross Hoffman, the company’s VP of Global Media Partnerships, will now report to Ali Jafari, who heads up Amplify, Twitter’s video advertising business. As part of its recent executive reshuffling, Twitter will be bringing Amplify and its traditional media-related partnerships and businesses under a single roof. Twitter’s other recent media team departures include VP of Media Katie Stanton, who left Twitter in January, and her successor Nathan Hubbard, who left the company only five months later.
Samsung is gutting its media services unit, Variety reports. According to Variety, Samsung’s Media Services Center America unit has laid off a number of employees in the past weeks, including some execs. Executive departures include SVP of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships Steve Stanford, SVP of Content and Services Daren Tsui, VP Ed Ho, and GM Iain Langridge. Samsung declined Variety’s request for comment, and it’s not entirely clear yet what the cuts mean for the future of Samsung’s media services unit. What is clear is that Samsung’s Media Services unit has struggled; its mobile video aggregation service, Milk Video, was shuttered last September, and its Milk Music streaming service has seen staff reductions. Still, its Milk VR service (recently renamed Samsung VR) has been surprisingly popular.
BuzzFeed nabbed some talent from Pinterest. The company has hired Edwin Wong has its new VP of Research and Insights. Reporting to CMO and Chief Creative Officer Frank Cooper, Wong will help the publisher develop its own audience insights; he’ll also work with brands and advertisers to extrapolate ad campaign data. At Pinterest, Wong served as Head of Partner Insights.
Well that’s quite the career shift. U.K. politician Oona King announced that she’s taking a leave of absence from her seat in the House of Lords in order to serve as YouTube’s global Director of Diversity. The move was first reported by the U.K.’s Evening Standard. “YouTube is the future of broadcasting,” King told the Standard.
Prior to joining BuzzFeed as Editor-in-Chief, Ben Smith wrote for which news outlet? (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone.)
Our Last Trivia Question: What’s the name of the multi-platform sports media company founded by LeBron James? Answer: Uninterrupted. Kudos to Louis Lewow-Lewow Media Group/GA, Les Garland-Afterplay.net, David Westberg-SAG-AFTRA Federal Credit Union, and Susan Nessanbaum-Goldberg-Generate/CA.
