07.26.16 Good morning. It’s Tuesday July 26, 2016, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Another day, another deal for Twitter, which announced that the platform will now live stream weekly out-of-market games from MLB and the NHL via a new partnership with MLBAM. Meanwhile, 120 Sports will also produce an exclusive, nightly multi-sports highlights show called The Rally that will run on Twitter. Live streams will run once-per-week for logged-in and logged-out Twitter users in the US, while MLB games also will be available worldwide, except in select international territories.
“Twitter is the fastest way to see what’s unfolding in MLB and the NHL,” said Anthony Noto, Twitter’s chief financial officer. “MLBAM has pioneered streaming live digital video and we could not be more excited to partner with them on live games as well as ‘The Rally’, giving our audience the live sports events they are already talking about on one screen on Twitter.”
Meanwhile, FOX Sports Regional Networks locked in an agreement to begin live streaming local NHL telecasts starting with the new season. The new multi-year deal will see NHL games televised on FOX Sports Regional Networks (RSNs) available for live streaming on FOX Sports GO to customers of participating pay-TV providers and allows distributors, including new streaming services, to offer NHL games via their digital platforms as part of their carriage of the Fox RSNs. FOX Sports Regional Networks have local media rights partnerships with 12 NHL teams, including the Anaheim Ducks, Arizona Coyotes, Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, St. Louis Blues, and Tampa Bay Lightning.
ESPN delivers the 2016 AT&T MLS All-Star Game Presented by Audi on Thursday as the Major League Soccer All-Stars face Arsenal FC. Coverage will begin at 7:30p with Adrian Healey on play-by-play and Taylor Twellman as analyst and reporter Monica Gonzalez. Max Bretos will host ESPN studio coverage with analysts Alejandro Moreno and Kasey Keller.
Tonight, HBO dedicates a full episode of Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel to an “expansive global investigation” of the IOC. The extended show begins at 10p and offers “months of interviews and research conducted around the world, spanning nine countries, reveal that some believe the IOC has strayed far from its progressive mission by transforming into an elitist organization whose massive power base and demands appear to be exacting a toll on the host cities, their citizens and the athletes they purport to serve.”
ESPN unveiled its game selection for the August 14 edition of Sunday Night Baseball presented by Taco Bell, selecting the Cardinals/Cubs game at 8p. Dan Shulman handles commentary beside analysts Aaron Boone and Jessica Mendoza and reporter Buster Olney.
The NFL continues to broaden its wings, inking a deal with Econet Media that will see Kwese Sports become the exclusive linear TV broadcaster of NFL content in sub-Saharan Africa in a five-year agreement. Brokered by ESPN Media Distribution, the partnerships includes live games and and launches with the 2016-17 season, offering a minimum of five live games per week including Thursday Night Football, three games every Sunday and Monday Night Football, as well as post-season play.

The event will be headlined by Flo Rida and Jason Derulo and anchor a slate of interactive fan experiences and community outreach programs leading into SummerSlam on Aug. 21. Other performances include performances from Daya and Jordan Hollywood, as well as appearances by WWE Superstars Stephanie McMahon, Paul “Triple H” Levesque and more.
Your Grateful Nation and FOX Sports are hosting “LA Is Grateful” on Thursday, described as a day of unique events in the LA area with monies raised will be used to support Special Operations veterans as they transition out of the military and into the civilian workforce.
Arby’s is beefing up its “We Have the Meats” campaign via a sponsorship deal with Andrew “Beef” Johnston ahead of the PGA Championship this weekend. Beef will wear an Arby’s logo on his golf shirt, as well on the back of his golf hat.
Sports 1 Marketing Corp is partnering with Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment to launch “Sports 1 Marketing Virtual Gift Nights,” a new initiative designed to offer Barclays Center visitors with exclusive digital gift cards to a variety of businesses. The program will begin this fall during New York Islanders and Brooklyn Nets regular season home games.
NFL Media locked in a deal with Sony Interactive Entertainment that will see carriage of NFL Network and NFL RedZone via PlayStation Vue. The channels are set to launch in time for the league’s regular season.
NBC Sports Group added more than 14 podcasts and made the entire NBC Sports Radio portfolio of programming available on-demand via podcast. New offerings will include a lifestyle podcast hosted by Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir, Tara and Johnny, debuting tomorrow and focus on hot topics in sports, pop culture, and fashion. Other podcasts include PFT Live hosted by Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio; Poscast, hosted by Joe Posnanski; golf analyst David Feherty’s podcast, Feherty; The Leisuremen, a podcast from The Dan Patrick Show’s Paul Pabst and Andrew Perloff; NASCAR on NBC hosted by NBCSports.com’s lead motorsports writer Nate Ryan; andThe Two Robbies Podcast, hosted by Premier League analysts Robbie Earle and Robbie Mustoe.
Tom Junod joined ESPN The Magazine and ESPN.com as a senior writer to focus on “big-picture, long-range, deeply reported pieces.” “Tom is joining the ranks of what we think is the premiere writing staff in journalism,” said Chad Millman, Editorial Director, ESPN Domestic Digital Content. “His stories are incredibly impactful and have the ability to transcend sports, and we are thrilled to have him on board.”
Meanwhile, ESPN’s The Undefeated added three more journalists to its staff, naming Domonique Foxworth, LZ Granderson and Mark W. Wright.
Teamworks announced a new partnership with the National Football League Players Association. The deal will looks to modernize internal communication and “allow for players to access information instantaneously on mobile devices as the NFLPA preserves and enhances the democratic involvement of its members.”
Blizzard announced that the 10th BlizzCon, on Nov. 4-5 in Anaheim, will be available to fans unable to attend via the BlizzCon Virtual Ticket. The purchase will showcase “live HD coverage of the show on two online channels, giving gamers at home a front-row seat to the developer panels, contests, and other activities at the show.” Bonues include in-game items, access to BlizzCon Loot and more. Free coverage will include the opening ceremony and the eSports tournaments taking place at the event. Meanwhile, DIRECTV customers in the US will be able to purchase a PPV for $39.99.
eSports team The Immortals are partnering with MeUndies in a sponsorship play that will include a video launched on their Facebook page this morning at 9a. The lifestyle clothing brand looks to offer consumers an upgrade in “underwear drawers around the world with super soft undies in bold prints,” with the video showcasing how the company helped each player find their perfect pair.
CSN Mid-Atlantic named Joe Ferreira as its VP of Content Strategy. The newly created role will see Ferreira lead CSN’s portfolio of studio programming, original content and digital media, including its online, mobile and social assets. He will develop and advance an integrated content, production and distribution strategy and guide content-related research and innovation. Ferreira will also oversee the strategic development of talent across all platforms.
The PGA TOUR announced that longtime executive Bill Calfee, who has served as President of the Web.com Tour since 2006, has decided to retire at the end of this year. Dan Glod, Senior Vice President and Chief of Operations of the Web.com Tour, will be named President, effective January 1.
