Emmy-winning actor James Garner died Saturday at age 86. Garner, who found success in film (Victor/Victoria, The Notebook), as well as television, was best known as the star of detective series The Rockford Files (1974-80).

IN THE NEWS

FX is no longer issuing press releases or analysis related to Live+Same Day ratings, saying not only do those numbers "no longer accurately reflect the audience delivery for a scripted entertainment program," but "grossly mischaracterize the actual audience due to the multiple data streams and platforms." Ratings reports for the net from now on will start with Live+3 delivery.

The case against Live+Same Day was made again at a Saturday TCA session. "If you were a sports reporter, you would not report the winner based on the third-inning score," said CBS‘s chief research officer, David Poltrack. "That’s what you’re doing if you use Live+Same Day ratings."

Having Fox network and studio 20th Century Television both under the purview of Dana Walden and Gary Newman will benefit both entities, said Fox Networks Group chairman Peter Rice at TCA on Sunday: "We’re telling the creative community, we have this great network and a great studio, you can speak to us in a single voice."

AMC‘s Breaking Bad won the TCA Program of the Year, CBS‘s The Good Wife took home Outstanding Achievement in Drama (phew!) and HBO‘s Veep and FX’s Louie tied in the Outstanding Comedy category. Winners were chosen by the TCA’s 220 critics and reporters. No big surprises – the list had been leaked online Saturday afternoon, ahead of the evening’s ceremony.

Sinclair Broadcasting is launching American Sports Network on stations it owns, offering live sports events from over 50 colleges. "This is another example of our foray into the content creation business," said Sinclair CEO David Smith. Action begins with the launch of college football season.

Rob Marciano has jumped from his co-anchor spot at Entertainment Tonight to ABC News, as senior meteorologist. Marciano will report weather headlines on Good Morning America Weekend and partner with chief meteorologist Ginger Zee for coverage across all ABC News broadcasts and platforms. Zee replaced Sam Champion, who decamped for The Weather Channel, in December.

Have we seen the end of the traditional fall season? Yup, according to Nina Tassler. "It’s all year long," the chairman of CBS Entertainment tells Cynopsis. "We don’t refer to it as midseason anymore. We have year round programming, summer strategy. It’s all about creating content and then deciding, will this thrive as a summer event or a limited event series?"

The CW has superheroes Arrow and The Flash… is Batman a possibility down the line? "Batman is not at the moment on the table," CW president Mark Pedowitz tells Cynopsis. But don’t give up on the Caped Crusader. Adds the exec, "Hopefully someday it might be."
