No thanks, said Time Warner Inc. to an $80 billion takeover offer from Rupert Murdoch‘s 21st Century Fox. The media company said in a statement Wednesday that accepting the proposal was not in the best interests of Time Warner or its stockholders, since the company’s strategic plan will create more value "and is superior to any proposal that 21st Century Fox is in a position to offer." Time Warner also cited "considerable strategic, operational and regulatory risks." 21st Century Fox confirmed it made the bid, adding that the companies aren’t in discussions.
Saying it was "embarrassed," Comcast apologized to Ryan Block and his wife, Veronica Belmont, after a recording of Block’s frustrating attempt to cancel their cable service went viral. When the cable provider’s customer retention specialist refused to take no for answer ("I’m really ashamed to see you go to something that can’t give you what we can"), tech journalist Block posted eight minutes of the call online. "The way in which our representative communicated with them is unacceptable and not consistent with how we train our customer service representatives," said a statement from the company. "We are investigating this situation and will take quick action."
NBC‘s Saturday Night Live didn’t renew the contracts of featured players Noel Wells and John Milhiser, who joined the late night sketch show last season. Brooks Wheelan tweeted his exit on Monday: FIRED FROM NEW YORK, IT’s SATURDAY NIGHT!

FilmLA reported Wednesday that on-location television production in LA County surged 33.7 percent, to 10,385 production days in 2Q14 versus 2Q13. The study attributed the jump to work on early summer shows, as well as California’s tax incentive program. The state has been in fierce competition with other states offering tax credit programs.
Rory Albanese is returning to Comedy Central as exec producer for late night show The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore, debuting in January 2015, reports Deadline. Albanese had been exec producer/showrunner for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart until he left last fall for a development deal with Warner Bros. Television.
Production and programming vets Eric Tomosunas and Leslie Glenn Chesloff (UP TV) are teaming for Swirl Entertainment, an outgrowth of Tomosunas’s Swirl Films, to produce and distribute urban content. Tomasunas will serve as president & head of production, with Chesloff wearing the CEO hat.

In metered markets, a six-week test run of Hollywood Today Live averaged .5/2 after two days on nine Fox stations, down 50 percent from its average lead-in and a 29 percent drop from its year-ago time periods. A trial run for The Daily Helpline fared worse, scoring a .1/0 two day average, down 67 percent from its lead-in and off 80 percent from its year-ago time period average.
History is bringing Pawn Stars, American Pickers and Mountain Men to Belarus. The A+E Networks channel launched to nearly one million homes via Beltelecom on July 15.

Adult Swim is teaming with its advertising partners for on-air, on-site and online fan experiences at Comic-Con. Among the efforts are a campaign with State Farm featuring Super Steve Frost, a superhero invented for the occasion; free rides in Adult Swim and Lexus-branded CT Hybrid vehicles and a site from Intel showing full-length panels at the event. Each video will feature Intel pre-roll messaging and will be housed in a branded environment presented by Intel. "Advertisers recognize Adult Swim’s relationship with young adults and look to us to better align themselves with marquee events like Comic-Con," said Joe Hogan, EVP, young adult ad sales for Turner Broadcasting.
Newsmax TV, soft-launched on June 16 to nearly 35 million homes, struck an agreement with Rentrak to support its marketing initiative to advertisers, agencies and service providers. "It is essential that we are able to provide a number of credible and key metrics that illustrate how our programming resonates with our viewers on all platforms," said Newsmax Media CEO Christopher Ruddy.
Nielsen reports its expanded Online Campaign Ratings have been met with "significant client adoption," including Adap.tv, BrightRoll, Torrential and YuMe, among others. "With this adoption, the enhanced Nielsen Online Campaign Ratings stands to transform the mobile advertising industry," said president, US Media Lynda Clarizio.
While most syndicated shows dropped the holiday week ending July 6, Live with Kelly & Michael was up 4 percent to 2.6, the top talker for the fourth week in a row.

Fox scored 3.0/12 at 8p, versus 2.0/7 for NBC’s America’s Got Talent. Baseball peaked at 3.4/12 at 9p, followed by 2.0/6 for NBC’s Talent.
