07/13/17: FOX gets a rise out of ASG; NBC’s Premier calendar; NBA picks up the pace

Good morning. It’s Thursday July 13, 2017 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The 88th Mid-Summer Classic scored gains over its 2016 counterpart as the Major League Baseball All-Star Game snagged a combined 9.442 million viewers across FOX, FOX Deportes and FOX Sports GO, marking a 7% rise over last year’s combined audience of 8.829 million viewers. The FOX broadcast drew a 5.5/11 in Nielsen fast-nationals. Numbers also saw FOX draw year-over-year ratings increases across demographics that included: Men 18-49 up 7% (3.1 vs. 2.9); Men 25-54 up 3% (3.7 vs. 3.6); Adults 18-49 up 5% (2.3 vs. 2.2); and Adults 25-54 up 4% (2.8 vs. 2.7). Overall, on FOX and FS1, 2017 MLB regular-season ratings are up a combined 4%, and across FOX Regional Sports Networks, MLB ratings are up 1% so far this season, year-over-year.
 
 
ON THE AIR

Less than a month before the 2017-18 Premier League season, NBC Sports Group unveiled its TV slate for the first two months of the season starting Aug. 11 at 2:45p on NBCSN. The NBCUniversal family of networks will showcase at least five games each week in the season’s first two months with the action opening with Arsenal/Leicester City in week one. 
 
Meanwhile, the NBA is quickening the pace of its games, announcing rule changes that saw the league’s Board of Governors unanimously approve changes that would see (with the launch of the new season) the maximum number of timeouts per game decreasing from 18 to 14 with teams limited to two team timeouts each during the last three minutes of the game. Meanwhile, all team timeouts will now be 75 seconds with the new format. “These changes will help us fulfill our goal of improving game flow and pace of play,” said Byron Spruell, NBA President, League Operations. “Fewer stoppages and less time without action, especially at the end of a game, will further enhance the viewing experience for our fans..”
 
Ahead of the launch of Olympic Channel on Saturday, the network announced plans to salute the 25th anniversary of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics with a Dream Team marathon, presenting all eight original broadcasts on eight consecutive nights in primetime starting Aug. 28 at 8p. The celebration continues with an 11-hour marathon on Labor Day, Sept. 4. Every Dream Team game from the 1992 Barcelona Olympics will feature the original commentary teams that called the action, including marv Albert, Mike Fratello, Jim Gray, Chick Hearn and Steve Jones. .
 
ESPN networks will take on English and Spanish-language coverage of the upcoming FC Barcelona/Real Madrid international soccer match on July 29. El Clasico Miami takes place at Hard Rock Stadium at 7:30p on ESPN, ESPN Deportes, ESPN Deportes Radio and streamed live on the ESPN App. ESPN Deportes’ Spanish-language telecast will be simulcast on ESPN2. On ESPN, Jon Champion handles play-by-play with Taylor Twellman as analyst. Overall, ESPN will have 25 on-air personalities commentating and reporting on the contest.
 
ESPN also announced that it had selected the Giants/Dodgers for the Sunday Night Baseball telecast on July 30 at 8p. The telecast will be called by Dan Shulman with analysts Jessica Mendoza, Aaron Boone and Buster Olney reporting from the field.
 
The FIA Formula E Championship’s inaugural Qualcomm New York City ePrix will see FOX Sports offer up multi-platform coverage of the two-race event, highlighted by Sunday’s live coverage of Round 10 on the FOX broadcast network at 1p. Ralph Sheheen hosts FOX Sports pre-race coverage from Brooklyn, teaming with the Formula E broadcast team of Bob Varsha (host), Martin Haven (play-by-play), Dario Franchitti (analyst) and Nicki Shields (pits/interviewer).

Bloomberg writes that TV networks are bracing for a drop in advertising revenue for football games in the coming season, potentially bringing down sales growth for sports broadcasts overall. The article states that, while the networks have raised prices for spots during NFL games next season, total ad revenue for the broadcasts is trending a few percentage points below a year ago.

GumGum Sports is teaming up with Stadium to track advertising placement on live programming, taped studio shows and on social media channels. “With GumGum Sports, Stadium will be able to provide real transparency to their sponsors and commercial partners,” said Jeff Katz, General Manager at GumGum Sports.  “As programming evolves, it’s critical for content providers to understand how consumers engage content and the value of their consumption, especially in an omni-channel broadcast setting.  We’re investing heavily in our growth and are thrilled to find such a perfect partner in Stadium.”
 
The American Flag Football League will offer a full replay of the League’s recent launch game via Twitter tonight at 7p. Fans can view the game via the league’s Twitter account @ProFlagAFFL, as Team Vick and Team Owens square off.
