X adjusted its settings so users are automatically opted in to allowing their activity to be shared with AI assistant Grok. “To continuously improve your experience, we may utilize your X posts as well as your user interactions, inputs and results with Grok for training and fine-tuning purposes,” said X’s settings web page. “This also means that your interactions, inputs, and results may also be shared with our service provider xAI for these purposes.” While users can opt out on the web, the data sharing cannot yet be disabled on X’s mobile app.

OpenAI is testing search engine SearchGPT, designed to combine the strength of its AI models with information from the web to offer users “fast and timely answers with clear and relevant sources.” The company eventually plans to integrate the tool into its ChatGPT chatbot. “We think there is room to make search much better than it is today,” wrote OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on X.

Meta has released a new open source AI model it touts as “the world’s largest and most capable openly available foundation model.” Llama 3.1 405B is available in more languages and countries and with a new feature that generates images based on someone’s specific likeness. Partners including AWS, NVIDIA, Databricks, Groq, Dell, Azure, Google Cloud, and Snowflake are offering services. “We believe the latest generation of Llama will ignite new applications and modeling paradigms, including synthetic data generation to enable the improvement and training of smaller models, as well as model distillation—a capability that has never been achieved at this scale in open source,” said the company in a blog post.

Google reversed its long-held plan to deprecate third-party cookies in Chrome, explaining in a blog post it will instead “introduce a new experience in Chrome that lets people make an informed choice that applies across their web browsing.” The decision does not impact Privacy Sandbox, added Google, saying, “We’ll continue to make the Privacy Sandbox APIs available and invest in them to further improve privacy and utility.”

The U.S. Department of Commerce released new guidance and software to help improve the safety and security of AI systems. The department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology shared three final guidance documents, first released in April for public comment, as well as a draft guidance document from the U.S. AI Safety Institute that is intended to help mitigate risks. NIST is also releasing a software package, Dioptra, designed to measure how adversarial attacks can degrade the performance of an AI system.

The Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement and the Television Board of Advertising issued new guidelines for local TV aimed at achieving reliable, stable and accurate post analysis where the projected rating is compared with the measured rating after an ad runs. Recommended guidelines include:
– A four-week aggregation and/or aggregation of units for post analysis – no day/date-based post analysis should be used.
– A 90% posting threshold – which refers to the sensitivity of the comparison between the projected rating and the measured rating.
– A four-week aggregation and/or aggregation of units is recommended for all markets regardless of methodology where variability is 50% or greater.
– Flexibility for special event, one-time programs or tentpole programs such as Super Bowl, Academy Awards and sports playoffs.

Meta removed over 60,000 accounts linked to sextortion scams on Instagram, all based in Nigeria. “Like many crimes, financial sextortion crosses borders, and over recent years there’s been a growing trend of scammers — largely driven by cybercriminals known as Yahoo Boys — targeting people across the internet, both with these and other types of scams,” said Meta in a blog post. Meta identified the “sextorters” during an investigation conducted within the company, and reported attempts to target minors to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Israeli security startup Wiz has ended talks with Google parent Alphabet on a proposed $23 billion deal, according to a Wiz memo. Instead, the company will proceed with its previously stated goal of generating $1 billion in recurring revenue ahead of an initial public offering. “Saying no to such humbling offers is tough, but with our exceptional team, I feel confident in making that choice,” wrote Wiz CEO Assaf Rappaport. The deal would have been Google’s largest acquisition ever.

Southwest Airlines is partnering with TikTok creators to offer travel-related content, including a “shoppable flights” program that enables users to book flights through the app. “We’ve seen the power of influence at work with our customers and employees and see the value that comes from our partnerships,” said Julia Melle, Director of Brand and Content at Southwest Airlines. “From content creation to distribution strategies, our investment in influencer partnerships helps highlight our carrier’s fun-loving personality and flexible policies on every fare, everywhere. If you can purchase an outfit for a trip on the platform, why not purchase the flight too?” The TikTok booking experience will be offered through October 14.

Sixty-one percent of advertisers using CTV/OTT will increase spending, with an average increase of 21%, according to the new “2024 CTV/OTT Advertiser Survey” released by Advertiser Perceptions and Premion. According to the study, spending increases are being driven by the ability to achieve full-funnel objectives (41%), reach a highly engaged opt-in audience (40%), and precision audience targeting (38%). Among those increasing their CTV/OTT ad spend in 2024, 74% are reallocating budgets from digital, social media, or linear TV, while 26% are tapping into new ad budgets to fuel this growth. The study also finds that 56% of CTV/OTT budgets are now primarily controlled by integrated/hybrid buying teams.

Clinch has partnered with MetaRouter to provide advertisers a cookieless, privacy-compliant solution to track and forward web behavioral events, including click data, from an advertiser’s website to Clinch for decisioning and insights. Both partners said the collaboration means advertisers can collect user signals and events server-side, addressing browser limitations on data while ensuring user privacy is maintained across all technical systems.

Nielsen’s content data business, Gracenote, said its contextual CTV categories will be available on Peer39 partner DSP platforms for the first time, enabling programmatic CTV ad buys. Additionally, Gracenote has tapped Magnite as the first SSP to support and scale these new CTV categories. Publishers including Cineverse, DIRECTV Advertising, Philo, Tastemade and Xumo can enhance their programming with Gracenote Contextual Video Data, which describes individual TV shows and movies to provide more visibility and transparency for media buyers who want additional signals around content.

Viant Technology announced the successful execution of a cookieless advertising test conducted for a major US-based pharmaceutical advertiser. Havas Media Network leveraged Viant’s advanced targeting technology within its DSP to conduct A/B tests against custom audiences from the Havas Media’s Converged Audiences platform, and found the cookieless approach achieved a 100% target audience reach and a 93% unique reach. According to DoubleVerify, the US campaign achieved over 70% viewability and adhered to rigorous industry standards for brand safety from DoubleVerify and Ads.txt.

YouTube ad sales grew 13% year over year to $8.66 billion, reported Alphabet, as the company beat earnings expectations for the quarter with a year-over-year rise in revenue of 14%. “Our strong performance this quarter highlights ongoing strength in Search and momentum in Cloud,” said Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai. “We are innovating at every layer of the AI stack. Our longstanding infrastructure leadership and in-house research teams position us well as technology evolves and as we pursue the many opportunities ahead.”

33Across, an addressable infrastructure designed for the open web, struck a new partnership with independent supply-side platforms Index Exchange. By integrating 33Across’ data capabilities with Index Exchange’s inventory via Index Marketplaces, media buyers can strengthen their programmatic targeting strategies beyond third-party cookies.

STREAMING

Fiber broadband service provider Brightspeed has reached an agreement with MyBundleTV, launching the latter’s personalized recommendation tool Find My Bundle and its suite of marketing tools and resources to help customers navigate the streaming marketplace. Brightspeed customers also have access to a co-branded version of MyBundle’s recently launched mobile app.

Video streaming in the US market is saturated, reaching 96% or 124 million households and growing just 1% quarter-on-quarter, according to Kantar’s latest Entertainment on Demand data. US households now subscribe to an average of 4 paid streaming services and ad supported video services are driving growth, with AVoD and FAST both growing their user base by 3% in the quarter. SVoD saw its user base decline by 0.6%. Sports are driving growth in streaming, with the fastest growing services including ESPN+ and DAZN, while Prime Video, Samsung TV Plus, and ESPN+ saw the greatest absolute growth in number of subscribers over the quarter. Netflix’s ad-supported tier grew subscribers by 2%, while its ad-free offering shrank 2% quarter-on-quarter.
