The 42nd annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards nominations were announced, and PBS led the pack with 52. “Vice News Tonight” and CBS’ “60 Minutes” were the top programs, each earning 16 noms. PBS’ “Frontline” followed with 14, HBO’s “HBO Documentary Films” with 10 and ABC’s “20/20” with 9. CNN ranked second among networks with 41 nominations, followed by CBS (30), ABC (22) and Vice (20). Awards will be handed out over two nights with ceremonies on Tuesday, September 28 and Wednesday, September 29. Both will be streamed live at 8p at watch.theemmys.tv and on the Emmys apps.

NBCU News Group is undergoing a major expansion of its streaming and digital Operations, adding 200 new positions and several new hours of live original programming on NBC News Now to debut this fall. New offerings will include a daily, primetime news program anchored by senior national correspondent Thom Llamas. Senior Washington correspondent and anchor Hallie Jackson will host a daily evening show as well as a weekly special newsmagazine series, and anchor Joshua Johnson will host an evening analysis program.

The fourth and final season of “Goliath,” starring Billy Bob Thornton, will launch Friday, September 24 on Amazon Prime Video, with newcomers J.K. Simmons and Bruce Dern boarding the series. In the last installment of the drama, Thornton’s character, Billy, will face off against the opioid industry.

Ryan Murphy teased the upcoming installment of his FX horror franchise “American Horror Story” on Twitter, with a poster for “American Horror Story: Double Feature.” The new season will tackle two horror tales; one by sea and one by sand.

The 72nd American Cinema Editors Eddie Awards will take place Saturday, February 26 at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles. This year’s event is being planned as an in-person, black-tie gala.

“Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman,” a new take on Norman Lear’s 1970s classic, has landed at TBS and is in script development. Emily Hampshire (“Schitt’s Creek) is developing the project with Jacob Tierney (“Letterkenny”).

FX extended its deal with The New York Times, ordering additional documentary films under “The New York Times Presents” banner. The next project in the series, “Move Fast and Vape Things,” about e-cigarette giant Juul, bows on FX and Hulu in September.

Lily Rabe nabbed a lead in Showtime’s “The First Lady,” playing journalist Lorena Hickock. The anthology series stars Viola Davis, who’s also an executive producer, Michelle Pfeiffer and Gillian Anderson.

Bailee Madison (“Good Witch”) has landed a lead opposite Chandler Kinney and Maia Reficco in HBO Max’s “Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin.”

Thom Zimny and Oren Moverman are co-directing docuseries “Willie Nelson and Family, currently under production in Austin, Maui, Nashville, Los Angeles and New York. The docuseries from Blackbird Presents and Sight Unseen Pictures is receiving participation and access to archives by the country singer, his family and friends.

Netflix is expanding its animation slate with “Chicago Party Aunt.” The 16-episode adult comedy hails from Chris Witaske, inspired by his Twitter account; Jon Barinholtz (“Superstore”) and Katie Rich, who also stars in the project; Will Gluck’s Olive Bridge Entertainment; and Titmouse.

WarnerMedia Kids & Family is expanding Cartoonito’s preschool slate, greenlighting animated series “Dylan” and acquisitions “Bing,” “Odo” and “Pocoyo.” The roster will be available on a preschool programming block launching this fall on HBO Max and Cartoon Network.

Heather Mitchell (“Scandal”), “Good Girls” creator Jenna Bans and her Minnesota Logging Co. have boarded the Fox-based “Never Have I Ever,” reports Deadline. The one-hour drama is based on the Joshilyn Jackson bestselling suspense novel of the same title.

Marcus Gardley has inked an overall television deal with Amazon Studios. The screenwriter behind the upcoming Marvin Gaye biopic “What’s Going On” started his career with the company, having written on shows like “Z: The Beginning of Everything.” He’ll develop, create and produce series for Amazon.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Ahmad Rashad will serve as host of “Tug of Words.” The new Game Show Network series tests contestants’ wordplay skills as teams compete to win $10,000.

“Little Women: Atlanta” returns Thursday, August 26 at 8p on Lifetime. Following every premiere, the after show, “Little Women: Atlanta Unfiltered” will take viewers behind the scenes of all the drama.

Acorn TV original series “My Life Is Murder” starring Lucy Lawless, debuts its second season on Monday, August 30.

A&E debuts two new series, next month. “Invisible Monsters: Serial Killers in America” bows Sunday, August 15 at 9p, weaving the stories of five infamous murderers. “I Survived a Serial Killer” premieres Wednesday, August 18, documenting the harrowing stories of survivors.

COMING UP

HGTV airs one-hour special “What Not to Design” on Thursday, July 29 at 8p. Starring Raven-Symone, the singer, actress and design enthusiast and her team of experts help overhaul home design disasters.

TECH TALK

YouTube scored big in the second quarter of 2021, with ad revenue hitting a record $7.0 billion for the period. That’s up 84% from $3.81 billion the prior period, when COVID put a damper on marketing spending. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, reported the news as part of its Q2 earnings.

Also posting huge revenue was Apple, which earned $81.4 billion for the quarter on higher-than-anticipated iPhone sales. The tech giant’s iPhone sales rose to $39.57 billion in the most recent quarter, up 50%. The number beat analyst expectations of $34 billion.

Idomoo has launched new technology that enables consumers to engage with videos much like they do with websites. The platform, called Living Video, is a suite of functionalities that make video evergreen, customizable and interactive. The videos can update in real time based on context and user input.

GOING GLOBAL

Banjay Asia is launching a “Survivor India” comeback. Zee Tamil will reboot the title after a 10-year hiatus.

Meanwhile, Banijay Rights announced a new adaptation of “LEGO Masters” for China. Long Qing Media will produce a first run of the competition reality format for Shenzhen TV.

VICE Distribution renewed its strategic licensing partnership with Hulu for over 130 hours of VICE content. VICE and Hulu began their union in 2019, with the new deal seeing most titles already available renewed and 50 hours of new programming added to the platform.

Be Inclusive has teamed with Tiger Tiger Pictures to bring “You Can’t Ask That” to streaming audiences in Asia. Featuring participants from all walks of lives, the unscripted format confronts prejudices, breaks down societal taboos, and addresses topics people are often too uncomfortable to ask about openly.

RATINGS

Led by George Stephanopoulos as guest host, “Jeopardy!” (4.8 Live+ SD national Nielsen rating, up 2% from the week before) was one of the few primetime access programs going up in the session ending July 18. The game show leader was “Family Feud” (5.5, down 2 %).

The only newsmagazine in positive territory was “Access Hollywood” (0.8, up 14%). It overtook TMZ (0.7, down 13 %). Meanwhile, sitcom “The Big Bang Theory” (2.1, down 9%), which entered the off-net syndication universe in 2011, slipped to an all-time low. And of the seven nationally cleared court show, “Hot Bench” (3-week high 1.5, up 7%) got the group’s only favorable verdict.

FOX News Channel completed the month of July as the most watched network in all of basic cable, according to Nielsen Media Research. Between 8-11p, FNC delivered 2.1 million viewers, 333,000 in A25-54 and 199,000 in A18-49. In addition, FOX Business Network’s “Varney & Co.” and “Kudlow” ended July as two of the top 10 rated shows in business news. Kudlow closed out the month marking its first weekly win with 211,000 Total Viewers.
