SESSION SPOTLIGHT: THE BOTTOM LINE ON WHAT ADVERTISERS WANT
Measurement and data are transforming both agency and client approaches. This session will feature agencies and brands talking about what they want and need around consistent, transparent measurement, the benefits and risks of programmatic, and more.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
TNT picked up scripted dramas Constance and Beast Mode (wt) to pilot. Darkly humorous Constance, starring Elisabeth Shue (CSI) from Team Downey in association with Sonar Entertainment and Studio T, follows a former beauty queen turned small town bureaucrat. Beast Mode, produced by Anne Wolfe and MACRO in association with Studio T, tells the story of a brilliant-yet-damaged woman with a “kill or be killed” mentality.
Playground Entertainment (Howards End) is developing an adaptation of the novel, Professor Moriarty: The Hound of the D’Urbervilles, by Kim Newman. Moriarty was published in 2011.
Loni Love (The Real) inked an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television calling for her to develop a scripted comedy series based on her own persona. “I am thrilled to be developing a comedy with Warner Bros. as I continue to co-host The Real,” said Love. “My life’s work is all about entertaining, inspiring and helping people become the best they can be.” Warner Bros. TV subsidiary Telepictures produces The Real.
Carol Mendelsohn (CSI) is moving from Sony Pictures Television to Universal Television, with Carol Mendelsohn Productions’ Julie Weitz. Under the exclusive overall producing deal, the pair will develop new projects.
Couldn’t hurt: CBS reboot Magnum P.I. kicked off production yesterday in Honolulu with a traditional Hawaiian blessing. Series stars Jay Hernandez, Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton and Stephen Hill, as well as producers and crew, participated. The ceremony included traditional royal maile leis, Oli Aloha (welcoming chant), and Pule Ho’oku’u (closing prayer).
MEASUREMENT & DATA
Lotame polled 300 advertisers about data, and 84% said accuracy was key when buying data, versus price (55%) and scale (37%). Most popular data types: age/gender (42%) and geographic (34%). “With so many different needs and goals, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all data set that marketers can simply rely on,” said Jason Downie, chief strategy officer. “It’s not surprising to see marketers investing in multiple data types for insights and activation.”
Shareablee announced expansion of its Instagram performance analytics to include several new insight metrics, including Instagram Stories and video views. “With more than twenty-five million business pages and over a billion users, Instagram is a vital part of virtually every business’ marketing plan, whether it be micro-influencers or worldwide banks,” said Tania Yuki, Founder & CEO of Shareablee Inc. “Instagram Stories is a powerful new format for brands and Influencers to make meaningful connections with consumers, and better reporting will shed light on how best to make use of Stories alongside Videos, Images, Carousel ads and more.”
Yuki will offer more insights on the “What to Do With All That Data” panel at the August 2 Measurement & Data Conference. It’s one of seven sessions exploring the latest media measurement challenges and solutions – check here for details on the event.
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
Season two of Kevin Hart Presents: The Next Level launches on Comedy Central Friday, August 3 at 11p. Each ep spotlights one stand-up comedian.
A&E series Nightwatch expands with Nightwatch Nation, a new nonfiction show from Dick Wolf and 44 Blue Productions that follows teams of EMTs starting Thursday, August 16 at 10p.
ADVERTISING & AGENCIES
WPP announced yesterday that it has agreed to sell IEG, the IEG Sponsorship Conference and ESP Properties’ U.S. Brand Consultancy to Engine Shop, part of Bruins Sports Capital. “We plan to build on IEG’s unrivaled tradition of helping property owners, rights holders and brands understand how to create and capture value for their multi-million dollar sponsorship investments,” Engine shop CEO Brian Gordon said in a statement to Adweek. “IEG has been the gold standard for more than three decades and will continue to serve clients from all lifestyle sectors with independent, well-synthesized research.” WPP acquired IEG in 2006.
Alphonso broke down the top advertisers in 2Q18 on cable news. Who’s spending dollars where? “A look the Q2 data for all three news channels reveals that pharma and medical-related advertisers are investing heavily across all three,” Allen Bush, CMO of Alphonso, tells Cynopsis. “That said, some brands are definitely ‘all in’ with one over the other. For example, MyPillow focused its spend on Fox News, as did travel advertisers Sandals Resorts and 1-800-Beaches. In addition, cosmetic surgery group Sono Bello concentrated its buy on CNN and internet security service NordicVPN invested big in MSNBC.” Top three on CNN were Otezla (482 airings), Sono Bello (560) and Humira (371); on Fox News it was My Pillow (737), Otezla (346) and ClearChoice (310); and on MSNBC, NordVPN (1222), SmileDirectClub (899) and Humira (324) took the top spots.
National advertising grew 5% in 2Q18 year-over-year, reports Standard Media Index. Q2 revenue from the Scatter market grew by 11%, while Upfront revenue dipped 4%. AMC’s The Walking Dead charged the most for a 30-second spot: $331,691.
DEALS
DHX Media closed its previously announced sale of a minority stake in Peanuts to Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc. SMEJ has indirectly purchased 49% of DHX Media’s 80% interest in Peanuts; DHX Media now owns 41% of Peanuts, SMEJ owns 39%, and the members of the family of Charles M. Schulz retain their 20% interest.
DIGITAL
Sony is exploring potential partnerships for its ad-supported streaming service, Crackle, Mike Hopkins, chairman of Sony’s TV division, told employees. “Crackle is a tremendously valuable asset for us, and with premium AVOD getting more and more traction as advertisers seek high value online advertising opportunities, we feel there is room for greater growth for our OTT business,” said Hopkins in an email. “With the right partner – one that could bring additional content or users or leverage existing assets for advertising and promotion – we feel we can expand Crackle’s audience and significantly increase revenue.” Hopkins said a small group is working on a potential partnership “so that the rest of our teams can operate business as usual.”
Google parent Alphabet reported 2Q18 earnings of $11.75 per share, versus estimates of $9.66. That didn’t count the $5.07 billion fine from the European Commission, which would mean earnings for the quarter dropped 9.3%. Revenue was $32.7 billion, up 26% versus year-ago.
Season two of Discovery Digital’s “Shark Week on Snapchat,” created for Snapchat’s Discover page, launched Saturday and will air new episodes July 25 and July 27. Last year the series garnered over 12 million unique viewers.
Sonos is pricing its shares between $17 and $19, said the smart speaker maker in an SEC filing two weeks after it filed to go public. Sonos plans to sell 5.55 million shares, with stockholders selling 8.3 million more.
Amazon Prime Video will start supporting the Dolby Atmos audio format, offering improved sound quality. First series to boast the technology will be Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, debuting Friday, August 31.
Livestreaming app LiveMe is absorbing Live.ly, which had been run by Musical.ly until it was shut down last month. Live.ly will point its users to LiveMe.
Sony Crackle original drama Snatch will debut all ten episodes of season two on Thursday, September 13.
ListenFirst used the ListenFirst Interest Score for TV and Film to analyze consumer interest on social and digital channels during Comic-Con 2018. Tops among TV series: Doctor Who, The Walking Dead, American Horror Story and Wynonna Earp.
COMING UP
Shark Week special Laws of Jaws debuts tonight at 9p on DIscovery, reenacting harrowing real-life shark attacks. What makes this project rise to the top? “What’s always been exciting to us about this special is the unique and incredibly fearless team of experts we were able to assemble, who were all willing to take major risks – in many instances, using themselves as bait – in order to learn more about shark behavior,” Lucky 8 co-president Kim Woodard tells Cynopsis. “As viewers will see, they go beyond simply ‘swimming with sharks,’ using five different real-life attacks as the basis for daring experiments designed to reveal how best to handle dangerous encounters on the water.”
NBC’s World of Dance will expand to two hours beginning tomorrow, July 25 at 8p. Upcoming guest mentors include Tony Award winner Savion Glover; Julianne Hough (Dancing With the Stars); America’s Got Talent judge Mel B; American Idol alum Paula Abdul, and American Ballet Theater principal dancer Misty Copeland.
Nikki Glaser, Anthony Jeselnik and Jeff Ross will serve as judges for season three Comedy Central’s Jeff Ross Presents Roast Battle, bowing Tuesday, July 31 at 10p. Viewers can get a sneak peek immediately following the net’s Bruce Willis roast on Sunday, July 29.
CASTING
Shamon Brown Jr., Barton Fitzpatrick and Michael Epps were upped from guest stars to series regulars on season two of Showtime’s The Chi.
SYNDICATION
Sewee cleared the 50th Miss Black America Pageant in over 80% of U.S. TV HHs. The show, emanating from Kansas City, Missouri, will include Black History vignettes in honor of its Black History Month window, and be hosted by ESPN sportscaster Charlie Neal and Miss Black America 2014 Alexandra Morton. As for swimsuits, the pageant promises a “tasteful swimsuit event.”
GOING GLOBAL
Alfred Haber Inc. international sales of Primetime special Elton John: I’m Still Standing – A Grammy Salute include Nine Network (Australia), Rogers (Canada), ITV (UK), WOWOW (Japan), CStar (France), M-Net (South Africa), TV New Zealand (New Zealand), TV2 (Denmark), RTE (Ireland), NRK (Norway) and NPO3 (Netherlands).
SOCIAL GOOD
Hill’s Pet Nutrition has joined NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations as a national sponsor of the stations’ fourth annual Clear the Shelters nationwide pet adoption campaign. On Saturday, August 18, the NBC and Telemundo stations’ initiative returns to more than 70 markets in the U.S. and Puerto Rico; hundreds of animal shelters and rescues across the country will waive or reduce their adoption fees to help families adopt a new pet.
