Acast has signed an agreement to acquire podcast database Podchaser, which will continue to operate as a separate brand and independent business. “As true champions of open podcasting, Acast and Podchaser combined will a accelerate the innovation and democratization of the podcasting ecosystem for podcasters, listeners and advertisers everywhere,” said Ross Adams, Acast’s CEO. “Together we will unlock the vast opportunity that we know exists for open podcasting to not just have parity with the data held by closed, paywalled platforms, but to leap forward and surpass them.”
LiveOne plans to spin out its wholly owned subsidiary, PodcastOne, as a separate public company, and dividend a portion of PodcastOne’s common equity to LiveOne’s 15,000 stockholders. In connection with the anticipated spin-out, PodcastOne closed a private placement financing of convertible notes and warrants totaling approximately $8.1 million prior to offering expenses, including $3 million invested by LiveOne. “The goal of both our management team and board of directors is to maximize stockholder value,” said LiveOne CEO, Robert Ellin. “PodcastOne has been a tremendous addition to LiveOne since our acquisition in 2020, and we feel strongly that the market value of our stock dramatically undervalues the sum of our parts, which includes our PodcastOne subsidiary.”
Pushkin Industries announced the acquisition of podcast company Transmitter Media, marking a ramping up of Pushkin’s in-house production capabilities for editorial and commercial opportunities. Transmitter’s founder and CEO, Gretta Cohn, will join Pushkin Industries’ senior leadership; Transmitter’s existing staff will continue to work on current projects as a newly formed production department within Pushkin. This is Pushkin’s first corporate acquisition.
Liberated Syndication has inked a new exclusive advertising partnership with real estate investing media network BiggerPockets, on AdvertiseCast. The seven-figure deal makes AdvertiseCast the exclusive sales channel partner representing the BiggerPockets podcast ad inventory. “Real estate investing is certainly a hot topic of interest for many and BiggerPockets has built a massive real estate investing community that’s highly desirable for many advertisers to reach,” said Dave Hanley, Chief Revenue Officer at Libsyn’s AdvertiseCast.
SiriusXM and Comscore reached an expanded agreement, bringing Comscore Predictive Audiences to clients across both AdsWizz and SXM Media. “With podcast consumption skyrocketing and the regulatory environment still very fluid, it’s critical to give advertisers the ability to develop privacy-forward and future-proof audience targeting on podcasts,” said Rachel Gantz, General Manager, Activation Services, Comscore. “Our expanded agreement with AdsWizz and SXM Media means that advertisers now have even better tools to ensure their advertising is appearing in podcast content aligning with their campaign KPIs, while also giving podcast content producers a more sophisticated offering to help better monetize their content.”
Curiosity Inc. has partnered with iHeartMedia to launch the Curiosity Audio Network, which will develop and release several podcast projects throughout the year. Curiosity Audio Network will feature original content as well as podcasts to complement programming from Curiosity’s library of documentary films, shows and series. “Audio is exploding as a go-to medium for connecting with audiences, and we believe Curiosity and iHeart’s shared passion for creating curiosity-catalyzing content is going to make for highly compelling storytelling,” said Devin Emery, Chief Strategy Officer for Curiosity.
Joe Rogan is under fire for an offhand comment he made on the July 14 episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience.” In a discussion with guest Tom Segura about possessions of LA’s homeless people being strewn on the streets, Rogan remarked, “Maybe you should just go shoot the homeless people.” In addition to outrage on social media, the comment drew criticism from advocates for LA’s unhoused community. “To advocate trying to shoot at unhoused people or just giving these dog whistles to people that do not see unhoused people as human beings — I can’t believe you’d advocate for it,” said “We the Unhoused” podcast creator Theo Henderson in a statement to Variety.
