07/18/18: DAZN detailed launch plans for its US platform

DAZN laid out the road ahead for its expansion into the US, detailing its plans following parent company Perform Group’s $1 billion joint venture with Matchroom Boxing and a nine-figure multiyear global distribution agreement with Bellator MMA. The first-ever fight night will be headlined by heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua and Alexander “The Russian Warrior” Povetkin as the two battle for Joshua’s WBA, IBF and WBO titles on Sept. 22 live from Wembley Stadium in London.
 
The OTT streaming service will go live stateside on Sept. 10, with a goal to make “the viewing experience simpler, more affordable and more accessible to allstarting with fight sports.” Unlimited access will see a single subscription price of $9.99 per month following a one-month free trial with all matches streamed on the service available both live and on-demand.
 
“We launched DAZN to disrupt the status quo and change the way the world sees sports,” said James Rushton, DAZN CEO. “When you get DAZN, you’ll get all the fights; we won’t stash our best matchups for PPV, linear TV or a higher-tier package. And you’re going to get the entire card live, no matter the time zone and without constraints for one affordable price.”
 
The platform also announced that Michael Buffer will be partnering with DAZN and Matchroom to bring his staple “Let’s Get Ready to Rumble” call to all fight nights as part of the joint venture.
 
 
ON THE AIR

ESPN locked in its commentator teams for the 2018 college football season, with Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit serving once again as the faces of ESPN’s college football game broadcast, teaming up for the fifth consecutive year on ABC’s Saturday Night Football. Maria Taylor will be the reporter on ABC’s SNF, joining Fowler and Herbstreit for the second consecutive year. This season, she will also host select episodes of College Football Live each week. Meanwhile, Sean McDonough returns to the network’s college football coverage calling a marquee game each week, joining Todd Blackledge and Holly Rowe to work the ESPN primetime game throughout the season. Some of the names in new places this season will include play-by-play commentator Adam Amin teaming with analysts Rod Gilmore and Quint Kessenich while play-by-play commentator Mark Jones will work with analyst Dusty Dvoracek and reporter Molly McGrath. ESPN also hired Dan Orlovsky primarily as a college football commentator, working both as a game and a studio analyst.
 
Meanwhile, ESPN inked multiyear contract extensions with SEC Nation host Laura Rutledge and Thinking Out Loud’s Marcus Spears to continue in their multifaceted roles with ESPN and SEC Network. The duo will continue to contribute across a number of high-profile network shows and programming.
 
The WNBA revealed the list of 22 players selected by fans, players, head coaches and media for Verizon WNBA All-Star 2018 with Washington Mystics forward/guard Elena Delle Donne and Los Angeles Sparks forward/center Candace Parker serving as team captains and draft the rosters for game on July 28 at 3:30p on ABC. Under the new All-Star Game format that replaces the traditional matchup between conferences, Delle Donne and Parker will select their respective teams from the pool of remaining All-Stars to form two 11-player rosters, which will be revealed on July 19 at 8p.
 
Fight Network announced it has launched on Channel 192 on SKY and Channel 161 on Freesat across the UK. “We are delighted to expand Fight Network’s global footprint to the UK,” said Peter Einstein, COO of Anthem Sports & Entertainment Corp., the parent company of Fight Network. “The UK is rooted in combat sports tradition, producing many world champions and memorable personalities over the years. Our diverse programming line-up will showcase premium combat sports content from around the world, while highlighting local stars and events, and we plan to bolster our schedule with more exciting content over the next few months.”
 
Through the first half of the 2018 MLB season, viewership of Los Angeles Angels telecasts on FOX Sports West have delivered the highest year-over-year (YoY) ratings increase of any MLB team, according to the network. In addition, 2018 is also positioned to become the highest rated Angels season on the regional sports network since 2005. At the All-Star Break, current local-market household ratings on FOX Sports West are up 79% than last season at the break.
 
In other local news, Brent Musburger will return to the broadcast booth, calling games for the Raiders, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Musburger agreed to a three-year deal to be the new radio play-by-play announcer for the Raiders starting this season, in addition to his duties as VSiN.

The Players’ Tribune is teaming with Prime Video for a “first-of-its-kind” collaboration to support the launch of upcoming series Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, which will be available Aug. 31 on Prime Video. TPT will produce immersive video content from Prime Video’s Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan experience at San Diego Comic-Con with Ronda Rousey, Joel Embiid, and Richard Sherman.  The athletes will embark on adventures such as the Jack Ryan Training Field, a hyper-reality 4D virtual-reality spy experience that tests the mental and physical strength of each athlete, putting them in a variety of scenarios, including riding a zip line, navigating a balance beam and driving a speeding car. The athletes will also have to escape from a room in the Dark Ops adventure, a first-of-its-kind experience which recreates a scene from the pilot episode of the new show.
 
The North Face announced the 2018 global brand program, “Walls Are Meant for Climbing,” asking people to rethink the way they look at walls. According to the company, the program aims to “counter the divisions we’re witnessing globally by inviting people to find trust in community.” In the US, the North Face continues its partnership with The Trust for Public Land to support the installation of public climbing walls in more communities, with a focus on underserved areas and making the sport more accessible to all.
 
 
DIGITAL & STREAMING

Amazon.is reportedly set to offer up a new set of real-time statistics and graphics for live baseball games later this season, expanding its cloud computing deal with MLB, according to a Reuters report. The deal makes use of Amazon Web Services’ artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities, follows a similar deal with the National Football League in November.
 
Twitter wrapped up its World Cup coverage, announcing that this year’s tournament saw 115 billion impressions on the platform with fans Tweeting the most during the Final between France and Croatia. Meanwhile, Brazil sent more Tweets than any other nation during the World Cup, followed by Japan, the UK, the US and France, with Brazil’s Neymar, Jr. the most-mentioned player of the tournament and Budweiser the most-discussed brand.
 
 
ESPORTS

The East Coast Conference is poised to introduce League of Legends as a sport and host their own seasons in 2019 and 2020. In addition, the Peach Belt Conference will also be bringing three more seasons of College League of Legends to their players in the 2019, 2020, and 2021 seasons. Starting next January, schools from both conferences will compete in their own respective conferences in a regular season before advancing into their own conference championships.
 
Skillshot formally announced the debut of the Realm Royale Invitational tournament series with play beginning on Thursday. KEEMSTAR will host the weekly matches, which will feature duo teams from North America and Europe competing for $100,000 in prizes starting at 4p , including $50,000 for first place.
 
Giant Food, a greater Washington D.C. regional grocery chain and the official grocery store of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, locked in partnerships with several brands for the inaugural season of Wizard District Gaming and the NBA 2K League, including Proctor & Gamble and their brands Old Spice, Gillette and Tide, Nestlé and its owned brand Outsiders Pizza, and Chobani. Giant Food and its partners will look to support the team and activate via unique products, interactive live streams, and live games on Twitch.
 
As Chuck Smolka, a nine-year-old from Staten Island, won the first-ever MLB Home Run Derby VR Tournament Championship, held as part of GEICO All-Star FanFest, MLB reports that his performance in the final round on Monday , which at the time on Monday ranked as the top live streaming video on Twitch.TV with more than 120,500 concurrent viewers.
 
 
ROSTER MOVES

The College Football Playoff announced that Andrea Williams had been named Chief Operating Officer of the organization. Williams comes to the CFP from the Big Sky Conference, where she has been commissioner for two years and will now be responsible for managing the national championship game and all affiliated events.  She will also be the primary liaison with six bowl games that participate in the CFP arrangement, and will also manage the process for selecting sites for the championship games.
 
The Western & Southern Open named Katie Haas as its Chief Operating Officer and that Tournament Director Andre Silva will add the role of Chief Executive Officer. Haas spent 15 years within the Boston Red Sox organization, most recently as Vice President, Florida Business Operations and will oversee the business operations for the Western & Southern Open, which is a joint WTA and ATP World Tour tennis tournament held each August. The event annually draws more than 200 of the world’s best professional players and nearly 200,000 spectators. Founded in 1899, the W&S Open has been held at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio, since 1979.
