Facebook said it removed more than 100 accounts and pages linked to Roger Stone and his associates across the social network and sister Instagram because they violated its policy against coordinated inauthentic behavior. Stone’s 40-month prison sentence, slated to start this week, was commuted by President Trump on Friday. The move came hours after the release of the third and final report from a two-year audit of Facebook led by civil rights attorney Laura Murphy that included interviews with hundreds of civil rights organizations and activists. In short, the audit concluded Facebook’s espoused efforts in recent years to stem the spread of harmful and divisive rhetoric that amplifies hate speech and threatens civil rights have been “reactive” and “piecemeal” at best. “The prioritization of free expression over all other values, such as equality and non-discrimination, is deeply troubling to the Auditors,” the report concludes.
